Hi there Lubner10, thanks for your reply! Ok if I use Phoenix WinPhlash to try to flash the bios using the renamed IMPERIAL.ROM file (formerly IMPERIAL.02) I get the error message: Corrupted interface descriptors in the new bios file. Part Table Signature not found in the Interface. Error code: -161 I didn't before have a copy of Phoenix Bios Editor but have got hold of one now, however when opening this file I also get an error message with the option to ignore: An unsupported module class 'Q' was found at offset C43CB, do you want to continue? I'm wondering if there is indeed some corruption in this file - either way it won't load (possibly for the best? ). I would try the t2682 file from the OEM page but this is in .BIN format - I'm pretty sure this has to be converted, maybe using a HEX editor?

Ok just to follow this up, I tried flashing the 2682.bin file using Phoenix Phlash16 Utility V1.4 Build 57 (2002) in DOS. It loads most of the 2682.bin file into the utility, however at the end of reading it displays error message: Platform Signature Not found in the Interface and you have to reboot. Will now try this utility with the other file. |

And to follow up again, same thing happens with the imperial.02 file from Imperial_GV.zip renamed to .ROM - Phlash16 brings up the same error message. |

Ended up using Uniflash - Imperial.ROM worked but wouldn't load into Windows (came up with disk error - tried selecting DOS or OTHER in disk section of bios but OTHER just resulted in a flashing cursor instead). So tried flashing the t2682.bin file. Bad move. This one has bricked it Presumably the only way to get this board going again is to remove the bios chip and get it reprogrammed? In some ways I'm kind of glad this has happened, I've wasted so much time on it already and there's precious little resources for the GV boards. |

Ok whilst I appear to be in tumbleweed zone here I thought I'd try one last request for advice. I think I can get a new Imperial GLVE board at a price i can afford (i.e. less than £10 with postage). My question is: does anyone know if this board has the Intel 845GV chipset or 845GL? Clearly the difference being that the former supports the 533Mhz FSB. Any help appreciated, my patience with life in general is virtually fried and it seems the only forum that can help me with this particular issue has become some kind of vortex

The "GL"VE is based on the 845GL chipset. Since it sounds like you can still get to a DOS prompt the boot block of the Bios seems to be working. Why don't you try to flash back to a know good Bios and see what happens. My next question is are you sure your 3.06Ghz CPU is a good CPU? Did you pull from a working system or is this something found on ebay/craigslist? I ask because I would think even though the Bios is for a GL board the CPU should still work and at worst case run at a lower FSB. |

I could get to a DOS prompt before the second flash - the t2682 flash is the one that bricked it. I've tried resetting CMOS to no avail, it won't even go to crisis procedure - it doesn't search for the floppy. So the boot block is no more. The new CPU was indeed from ebay but from a reputable seller who stated it was tested and working. They're a computer recycler and hence test all parts (including PAT test where applicable) before being sold. Whilst I cannot therefore guarantee it works I have no other way of testing it. It would make perferct sense however that it wouldn't run on an 845GL board / bios as they only support 400Mhz FSB - others have tried 533MHz CPUs on these boards and got the same results - no post. |

You may want to look at TD's End User's Upgarde page and see what other boards members have found to work. Might be easier to find one of those boards over the Imperial. |

Thanks Lubner, yeah I figured the same thing. I thought if I went for a board with the same chipsetn like the others have then *hopefully* I'd be ok and not have to reload windows as all I have is the OEM copy and a ghost image I saved as a backup if needs be. I've got hold of an MSI MS-6577 that uses the Intel 845GE chipset - brand new board, got it for £22 plus postage. Will have to see what happens, I'll post the results in a new thread. Thanks for the advice here, it's otherwise a lonely world in emachine upgraders! |

This gets better by the minute. Board works, processor posts, Windows doesn't reactivate. Tried the phone activation, got the electronic woman, cannot be reactivated. I cannot afford to buy a copy - all I've done is replaced failed hardware with the same spec. This is unbelievable |

It's been a while since I phone activated anything but there should be some option to talk to a live person after the automated way failed. Just explain you had to replace the MB and used the exact same MB that you just purchased from "E" and you should be fine. |

Actually got there just before you replied! I tried the activation helpline and they have an automated system where you key in the numbers from your phone - this failed and said the software was pirated. So I had to trick the system into letting me talk to an operator, just stayed on the line and didn't press anything and eventually it let me speak to someone. He asked me to input the product key from the label on the case and then asked a series of questions and I explained I had to replace the motherboard and tried to select one as close as possible to the original. He said this was ok and gave me the activation key. So it's running! Everything's been detected bar the sound so will sort that out now. All credit to Microsoft, they might have screwed over the average (poor) user with the overall policy on OEM installations, but I'm glad they let their activation operators take an empathetic line. The system is hardly any different with minor upgrades on processor and RAM. So for the record this is running a MSI MS-6577 v2.1 motherboard (HP bios) and didn't even require a rebuild of XP Home - which is fortunate as this PC came with no repair CD and it's not possible to create one with XP Home. I really would not have had the patience for a complete reformat either. Thanks for your support here Lubner. Golden lesson here is that you should only execute a bios update if you're 100% certain it's the right one for your board - else leave it, it's not worth the hassle. |

My emachine T6420 is at Best Buy. I already had technical support paid for so I took it to them instead of trying it on my own. I could not get the restore disk to run. They have the restore disk. They are asking me for the driver update disks. I did not receive anything but the restore disk with my emachine. Is there somewhere I could download these drivers? emachine.com does not have them any more. Thanks so much, Christy |

Thank you so much! The guy from best buy told me they can't find a driver for the ethernet. I noticed there is not a driver listed on the list you sent. Is there one? He said we won't be able to connect to the internet if he can't update that driver. He gave me 2 phone numbers, emachine and acer, to see if I can order the disk. Do you know anything about that? |

Ethernet driver is contained in the System: nForce4 430/410 System Drivers I seriously doubt that eMachine or Acer is going to have the recovery disks for a computer that old. |
