AVAST YE ... DEAD MEN DON'T BITE!

Found an nice DNS filtering service that is free. https://www.opendns.com It is not and end all, but it is a start and with some customizing, you can do a fairly decent job of protecting kids. It would be nice if there was a key word blocker. Anyone found anything better and free? |

The main problem I see with it, is while it filters the website, it does not filter search engines. So if a curious child does a Google image or video search, one can find inappropriate material. I even turned Google's safe search to its highest settings and still got inappropriate material. Since Google is my search engine of choice, I added all other search engines to my black list, added images.google.com and video.google.com and also video sharing category in their presets. This has really done a nice job of blocking things. Only thing is now if I want to search images, I have to log on to the admin site and unblock. Small price to pay for keeping the kids safe. |

on further review, it looks like it is better to the categories search engines, video search engines, and video sharing and then add www.google.com to the white list. This way you don't have to add all the hundreds of search engines to the black list. But just make sure you add www.google.com to the white list and not google.com to it as that unblocks all of Google including the image and video, while www.google.com only unblocks the search engine. |
