Dressed like that, is it any wonder? Obviously, it's not because of the chariot (Aprilla mayhaps?), in fact, that alone should be enough to offset the armour! You must be the regional jousting champion!

Safety First at Enigma's house. That's a serious road-rash preventing suit. Seriously though, I don't blame you at all for wearing it. It's not the biker that's dangerous....... it's the people in the cars/trucks that don't pay attention and endup slamming into the biker. Kudos for the safety factor. (even though it makes for some funny comments).

The story behind the picture is I had to move the scooter out of the garage to get my RSV out. After I got back I decided to take the above funny picture before putting the scooter up. I pushed the scooter up the small incline of my driveway and rode it down for the picture. I've never worn my suit while on the scooter, though I should be wearing something that protects nearly as well. Hitting the road at 50 MPH hurts no matter what you are riding. I had just got back from riding this...

Enigma, Ouch! You're correct, hitting anything at 50mph is gonna leave a mark somewhere... Ouch! That's a mean machine d00d! Now is the black one the same scooter you showed before? We have a terrible selection in the northern Indiana area and I'll probably need a suit like yours to weather the sneers & jeers of the local bikers! I saw a Tank next to a Honda 400 at Action Cycle in Mishawaka (www.goactioncycle.com). Don't remember what model but it was a 150 and I wasn't impressed with the quality of the finish or parts on the Tank while the Honda didn't disappoint. I didn't stay long enough to check out their stock but let me know what you think of what they claim to carry on their website, if anything like Strada or Wildfire are worth looking into. Would you buy anything from Scootertronics? Thanks!

Yes, that's my Aprilia SR50R Factory. Looks smaller with someone on it.
I'm not not familiar Strada or Wildfire, or other similar clones. If they have any of they have any on the floor give them a good look over. Talk to the guys in the service area about reliability and known problems (the guys in sales will tell you anything to make a sale). If you can find someone who has one talk to them about their experiences.
I wouldn't buy anything chinese sight unseen. The action cycle guys seem pretty good and reliable. Supporting someone local is always a good thing to do. Something to note. Most of the chinese scooters have "ABS". It's not true active ABS, it's a little spring loaded or gas charged cylinder that reduces pressure on the brake caliper pistons. You can see it in the picture below. It's the silver cylinder hanging off the back of the brake caliper. They do make it harder to lockup, but at the trade off of less feel and less braking power. It is still possible to lockup, but you really have to squeeze the lever. If you don't like it, it's really simple to remove (in most cases the brake line should be long enough to not need a new longer one).

Thx for the comments! I went by Ed's Cycle Repair just down the street from Action Cycle and Ed doesn't like much of the "Chinese" product he sees especially Tank products. But he likes Linhai (Yamaha) products and has a Honda Reflex for $3,600. He also has a 1976 Honda CB360 2 cylinder for $1,275 that looks pretty good for its age! He suggests I buy a 50cc Wildfire WFH50-S2 for $900 to avoid paying for license and insurance, get a good helmet and protective gear, and save a few bucks this summer. Not sure the wife will allow it. Check this out if you get a chance http://www.bandit-motorsports.com/scooters/uc-250z.html. It appears there is a dizzyiing array (and growing daily!) of product available and opinions are all over the spectrum.
The real Yamaha and Suzuki "Scooters" look to be designed and built by more than your garden variety well trained chimps. And that Reflex looks solid too. Oh well, it doesn't cost me much of anything to dream...

I forgot, it looks like Vespa, Buddy, Sym, and Kymco have some kind of aggreement to be sold together, maybe they share a lot of parts. From what I've seen they all are highly regarded and the Vespa Piaggio looks to be pretty slick! Two front wheels makes for 3 points of contact, imperically more stable in transitions than 2 points, like a snowmobile front end. Vespas are not inexpensive!

I can't blame him.
There are some pros to a 50cc, but some cons too. 50cc are not interstate highway legal and have a top speed of about 50mph at best. I've done 54MPH on a flat with the SR50 and 62MPH downhill. I tend to avg about 45MPH to 50MPH. Is this the Wildfire WFH50-S2 you are looking at? If so, stay away. If it is anything like the other similar clones (it probably is) it's junk. Where I worked we sold a similar model. It's a slow 4 stroke 50cc that does 35MPH at best, derestricted with a good tail wind. The brakes are crap drum brakes. You could probably slow down faster by using your feet flintstones style. To their credit, they were fairly reliable engine wise. I'd buy this WFH150-SE for $100 more before I'd buy the WFH50-S2. It still has the crap drum brakes, but atleast it has 3x the displacement. It is a 150cc which does mean you need a MC license and to register it... maybe. If you pull off the stickers that say "150" (better yet just pull off the "1" so it says "50") you can ride it around and the cops will never stop you (I've known many to do this, just don't go speeding by them at 60MPH or try riding on the interstate highway). The WFH150-SE is a clone of the Kymco Cobra (not the engine mind you, it was a 2 stoke 50cc), a great scooter that Kymco doesn't make anymore. If you chose to go the 50cc route, get a 2 stoke. It will have more power, better acceleration and top speed, and be much simpler to work on. You will need to buy two stoke oil, but all are injected type systems, so there is no premixing. On my Aprilia SR50R Factory I get about 1200 Miles to a liter of oil. That's because my engine is a Di-Tech engine. The Di-Tech is a direct injection (Injects fuel right into the combustion chamber) so it uses less oil than a carbed 2 stoke (Carbed SR50 gets only about 300 miles to a liter). Reason being is that the carb version mixes gasoline with the oil in the crankcase so more oil is need, where as in my di-tech there is never any gasoline in the crankcase so less oil is needed. The Di-Tech is a very clean engine, as clean as or cleaner than a 4 stroke.
Doesn't look too bad, but pictures can hide lots of flaws and you can't see whats under the bodywork. It's bs that it doesn't come with the top box pictured. It's a 250 so it has plenty of power and being a touring type it has a good amount of storage.
Nope. My 2007 Aprilia SR50R Factory cost me $2300 (Which is below dealer cost. MSRP is over $2700.) and $450 to ship. I bought it new from a dealer in MD. The wasn't to ship it as I was moving my grandmother down from Baltimore and I was going to pick it up the next time I went up there. Ended up not going up there a third time so just paid to have it shipped (wouldn't have been much cheaper to drive up there myself anyway).

Thanks d00d! Your comments are appreciated. Ed's a bit older than me and much more grizzled and a curmudgeon to boot but he sounds sincere. His recommendation to me for the Wildfire WFH50-S2 was purely for commuter economy and the fact that his shop would work on it. He gave me a pretty good explanation about this regions "knowledge pool" and I have no reason to doubt his frustration since we're next door to Elkhart/Osceola, motorhome "heaven" where you can feel your IQ fall at least 10 points as you cross the county line! He also suggested I take advantage of the Linhai MC-17 for $1,600 delivered as it arrived "mismarked" and is a 150cc rather than 50cc and that I didn't need to get the MC license, etc. Problem is I'm having trouble finding it on the web so I couldn't point you to it but it's not bad looking, a little larger than the Wildfire but I still won't be taking it on the Toll Road (I-80/90)! The Honda Reflex is something I would be tempted to take on the interstate but I'd need a few miles under the belt before I ventured there. But I'm not looking to spend $3,600 to save on gas! Any thoughts on the 1976 Honda CB360? Too old (like me)? Too hard to get parts for do to age? It's probably built like a tank compared to a Tank!

Mismarked 50cc four stroke were pretty common a few years ago. Many were really 125cc/150cc. With a four stoke you really do need a 100cc+ scooter to match the performance of a 50cc two stroke. I really wish the law would change to allow 50cc two strokes and 100cc four strokes not require license/insurance/etc.
It's a neat motorcycle, but I have no what parts support would be like. It would be better built, more reliable and faster than a chinese scooter of equal price. However there is no way to get around the need for a MC License, insurance, and registration. Fuel mileage wouldn't be too bad. Probably in the 50's if you just cruse around.I found you the perfect scooter on ebay... ![]() On a more serious note, this scooter doesn't look too bad for $1088 shipped (was $988 a few months ago)...

The one that Taz posted is quite nice. If you like it and it is in your budget, go for it.I posted the one I did because of it's price. It also had a nice style (lots of italian influence). Maybe we can get TJ to move all of these post and the post in the "What the ???" thread to their own scooter thread. |

TD, d000000d, sweeeeet!!! Building an engine for your GTO you name dropper you! Those were the daze... of purple haze... Sorry, I digressed.
agreed, we need a sc00ter thread! Enigma, you must admit there is a lot of product that is hard to differentiate on the web. Seems like "badge engineering" as one really cool looking bike looks exactly like another with a different "brand" name. And parts warranty varies from 3 months to 12, woo woo, don't use it up too quickly or you'll be walking shortly. Seems like a used Honda is more than worth twice the price of a new tank and may last 3? times as long with fewer issues. Oh well, it's an interesting discussion that will only become more relevant as the price of gas continues to climb like a mountain goat avoiding a rising river! And Operation Chaos was executed by several people I know here in Northern Indiana if for no other reason but to have some fun by keeping it interesting in this whacked out *erection* year! Rush is entertaining and mostly right but we don't take "marching order" from him, well, not everyday.
