UNOFFICIAL WIN98SE SERVICE PACK
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

Both Unofficial Service Pack WIN98SE and WINME work wonders with these old Operating Systems. I've used both since their early beta days and highly recommend them if you have a need.
Both WinME and Win98SE are great on older systems that are light on hardware resources.

All the Extras for Win 98SE:

This service pack in very nice! I have Win98SE on my E-tower 667IR and this makes the old Win98 so much better in my opinion.

Mullet Man I was using this on my old eMon 500a until I bit the bullet and went with Win XP Pro to free up the rest of my 160gb drive and to install software that runs on XP but not earlier. It was sweet and is still installed on the old 40gb Maxtor. Now I'm trying to diagnose the no boot on the eMon and the beep codes 2-8-2-1. AZPicturethis gave me the link to beep codes and I still can't decifer the meaning as my machines beeps don't match anything. And the 160gb Maxtor with Win XP isn't cooperating. At least I have a backup, just can't seem to get the Seagate 160gb backup drive to act as a boot drive, I guess it's not really an image just a backup. Oh well, PCLinux 2007 seems to work well in LiveCD or installed mode but doesn't substitute for Win XP when required by a program. Anyway, keep it rolling as long as possible! Ar!!! beer

I hate resurrecting ancient topics but as a kick (and because a recent surgery has left me home bound and bored) I started messing around with older operating systems and found this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex/

KernelEx is an Open Source compatibility layer with an aim to allow running Windows 2000/XP-only applications on Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium operating systems.

KernelEX wiki: http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/Category:Compatible_applications

The Official KernelEx MSFN forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/130936-kernelex-451/ (this forum also has a larger and more current list of compatable apps)

I now have both a Windows 98 SE and a Windows Me virtual machine running Firefox 3.6 with the latest Flash and Java installed. Unfortunately, Mozilla is dropping support for the 3.X versions of Firefox soon so hurry!
