NEWBIE
Hello:

I've got a 633ids (celeron) with 256 MB RAM running XP pro. I don't want to put much $$ into the computer (I plan on buying a new one in a year), but wouldn't mind buying a cheapo PCI videocard so that I could disable my on-board video memory (which I get the feeling is eating up too much processing power) and so that I could improve basic graphics performance. I do not do any video/graphics editing, nor do I do any gaming on my PC (I'm a console gamer). Can anyone recommend a cheap card for the purpose of just speeding things up a bit?

Thanks!

I have this card in one of my pc's. Hard to find, but I've been very happy with mine.

Radeon 9100

nVidia FX5200's are still pretty easy to find, and should be around $50, maybe less if you find a rebate deal. Check Newegg, outpost, zipzoomfly, ChiefValue, etc.

1.) Make sure your mobo offers the ability to disable onboard video. (some actually don't I found out, I just thought it was audio, but it's both from what I've heard from some friends).

2.) You might need a power supply upgrade. A lot of video cards require a 250 Watt ps.

Good luck!
System Specs:

566i2:

Intel Celeron 566 (OEM)
256 MB RAM
60 GIG Maxtor 7200 RPM HD
Creative Labs 8x 4x 38x CD-RW
Samsung 40x CD-ROM (OEM)
3D AGP Chipset Intel 810 (OEM)
Intel AC'97 Codec Sound
Creative Labs Soundblaster LIVE! Value
Windows XP Pro w/SP 2
Cognac mobo
Still crappy...but getting better. :P

If you are not a gamer, then you could install a MX4000 with no problem. They are really cheap now for around $30.00 and don't draw too much power from PSU.

If there is no setting in your BIOS for setting graphics to "Automatic", then open the case, install the card, plug into REGULAR onboard monitor, install the drivers for the card, go to Start/Control Panel/Hardware/Device Manager and find the onboard graphics there. Disable it, then shut down the PC. Hook monitor into new card and start it back up. ;)
