Hi guys!
I recently did a clean install of XP Pro on my eMachines H2602 and went through the usual post-OS installation procedures of re-installing all my drivers, softwares, etc. Everything works fine 'n dandy (sound, USB, CDRW, etc.), but upon viewing items within my Device Manager, under Other Devices I see that pesky yellow question / exclamation mark next to "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". Upon clicking it, it shows "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" Since the eMachines website doesn't seem to have any listed drivers available for my H2602, I located some downloads for it here at EmachineUpgraders when doing a search for my model. However, it doesn't seem to be what I really needed. So, I go directly to the nVidia site to download the latest drivers, but that failed to fully load, as well ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html ). Anyhoo... this has become a frustrating dilema. Basically, what/which driver do I *exactly* need to fix that yellow question/exclamation mark in my Device Manager? The H2602 uses the nVidia GeForce4 MX onboard video (not PCI). This is driving me bonkers! Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys!.... and, I'm so happy to see a forum dedicated to eMachines since I've been a big fan of them for several years! ~~ Sarah |

Sarah, you might want to give the nvidia 5664 driver a try...That is what I had on my machine before I went to dedicated graphics...g3b |

If that doesn't work....you might need to clean out all the prior video driver installs that could be causing a conflict. Go to majorgeeks.com and get driver cleaner pro or one of the others.....cleanup and try the driver of choice. TJ

Hi g3b and TJ!... thanks for your tips! This dilema is really beginning to annoy me! Prior to installing the new drivers, I made sure that all previous drivers were indeed cleaned out, AV software disabled to avoid installation conflicts, BIOS settings were correctly enabled, etc. As earlier stated, everything else on my computer works perfectly fine, except for that pesky yellow question/exclamation mark in my Device Manager / Other Devices: "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". I've tried approximately six different drivers from the nVidia site for this GeForce4 MX onboard video (un-installing each one before trying another)... the latest updated version down to a previous version from the same time my computer was manufactured.... all to no avail. The driver seems to install fine, I am prompted to restart my system, and when I check my Device Manager, there it still is... that pesky yellow question/exclamation mark! The really odd thing is that all my hardware is the same as it was from when I purchased my eMachines H2602. I haven't changed anything or installed any new hardware at all... so I'm at a total loss for why none of the drivers are working for me? Is there the possibility that my onboard video is dead, which is why it may not be accepting any nVidia drivers? ~~ Sarah |

Sarah, If nothing else works for you, try this: Your motherboard is referenced as AU31. On the FIC site (manufacturer), you won't find it as AU31; instead, look at K7M-NF18G, and search here if you can find a driver for your video, instead of nVidia. There is also a FAQ folder where perhaps the answer is already provided. If not, they may have a technical support site email where you can expose this problem. Make sure you don't say AU31, because apparently they don't want to recognize/acknowledge this motherboard, for some obscure reason; tell them you have a K7M-NF18G board. Let us know if you make any progress on this, and please repost. Titi |

Hi Titi... Very excellent mobo advice! I browsed the FIC site, but was unable to locate the specific video driver that I require since the ones that I've tried from the nVidia site do not seem to remedy that pesky yellow question/exclamation mark in my Device Manager. I sent a brief e-mail to their tech support, and I hope to hear from them soon. I'll report back when that happens. Thank you again. ~~ Sarah |

Bill's people say ... "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) - To install the drivers for this device, click Update Driver, which starts the Hardware Update wizard.) Wow ... great help there. Just out of curiosity, is the entry you are speaking of "sound, video, and game controllers"? If so, did you click the plus sign next to it and look at the expanded list to see which exact driver it is looking for? It may be something besides the video. Taz BTW, I say as no one else will ... Hello SarahC You stated that the emachine is pretty much stock and you haven't added anything to it. In the device manager where the yellow ? is, would there happen to be another device similar to that one when you scroll down some under "Display adapters"? Better yet, does your PC have (2) different places to plug a monitor into? If so, then that means there is a video card installed and all the graphics are running off of it instead. You will then not need to worry about the yellow ? if this is the case. If there are no other video devices installed, then I wonder what your graphics look like on your PC. Hope this is of some help to you!

Taz... thanks for the compliment. At least my webcam still works on this crazy computer! Everything within "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" is A-OK. The yellow question/exclamation mark is listed within Other Devices: "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". When I install a driver for it, the installation process goes fine, I am prompted to restart my computer... and after I restart it, there's that yellow mark still there! Apart from that, everything else within my Device Manager is fine. It's really baffling on how all my other hardware drivers installed without any problems whatsoever, except for that video one? My monitor displays fine, and I can surf the net with no problems as I'm doing right now. However, when I tried to re-install some of my games, my system passes all the pre-installation requirements except for that graphics card/video thing, so basically the installation process shuts itself down. This onboard nVidia GeForce4 MX thingy worked great with my games before, so I have no clue as to why it's being such a problem child now with not being able to accept ANY drivers that I've tried? Mullet Man... There's only one place to plug my monitor in to, which is the standard onboard video. I didn't install any PCI graphics cards, though I'm beginning to think that might be my next best option if I want to be able to play some of my games again. My eMachine is basically stock, but I did just add a Seagate 40gb secondary HDD about an hour ago to store my MP3's on. Anyhoo... it's after midnight and I think I had better get some sleep. That video driver thing has upset me enough for the day... blarrgh! ~~ Sarah |

I finally got a reply from FICA's tech support about which specific driver I would need to download for the K7M-NF18G mobo's onboard video controller, which stated.... Dear User, Since this is not a retail board we do not have support for it. Ain't that "funny?" "We built this board, but we were drunk/stoned when we did it and really don't know what we put on it"...,,or "this is my first day on the job here and if I don't know the answer to your question so I'll just c&p this bullshit answer..." Just guessing here, but do you think it might be a monitor driver that is (!) in the Device Mangler? |

Lubner... haha, sometimes I really wonder about those folks at FICA?!? I think being "schizophrenic" is listed as one of their requirements on job applications for tech support positions?
Unfortunately, I no longer have my original restore discs for this PC. The unified driver that I used after my OS re-installation earlier this week was from the H2602's download page of eMachineUpgraders.com... http://www.emachineupgraders.info/dir1/mot...downloads.shtml (listed near the bottom) After it was installed, everything works nicely (USB, sound, etc.) except for that one thing in my Device Manager. As to your questions... 1) The only thing listed within Computer is "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" 2) I don't see "Display Adapter" listed anywhere in Device Manager 3) Within Control Panel/Add and Remove, there are no nVidia-associated icons See?... this is the realllllllly odd thing that baffles me? There should at least be *something* there and within my Device Manager listed as "nVidia" since my onboard video is a GeForce4 MX (made sure it was enabled within BIOS, too). Everything in my Device Manager is perfectly fine... except for what I've already mentioned with that yellow question/exclamation mark, which is... Other Devices - Video Controller (VGA Compatible). As mentioned earlier, I haven't removed any original hardware from this PC since the day I bought it years ago. Prior to my re-installation of XP Pro earlier this week, everything worked fine, no yellow marks in Device Manager, etc. I had a bunch of games loaded that I could always play with no problems.... but now, the only problem I have with this PC is that I can't install ANY of my games again because of that video thingy stating that I have no drivers loaded for it. So weird! Apart from all that garbage, I hope you all are having yourselves a great weekend! ~~ Sarah P.S. --- Yay for NASCAR!!... and woo woo woo for #24 Jeff Gordon!!

Sarah, When you went here, did you download the very first set of drivers listed? This is strange .... XP Pro generally has some good enough drivers to run Nvidia products, I'm surprised that it is not picking up those at least. If you right click on your desk top and then click on propertise in the pop up, then click on the settings tab, what is listed as the display? Taz |

Sarah, Went to FIC site and dug around the FTP server and found a driver set for the K7M-NF18G from 2003. It has Nvidia drivers in it .. dunno if it will help, but may be worth a try. ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/driver/1...ATCH/NVidia.zip It is 50 MB and a slow download .. took 20 min on broadband cable. Hum, Is this the only driver you installed? I don't believe this driver package include the video driver you need. It's just the system drivers. Check the ReadMe file on TD's page. I see no video driver. Might need to go to Nvidia page for the latest graphic drivers. |

Taz... thanks a bunch for the link to the drivers. I'll give that a go later this evening!
Lubner... yes, I know that there were no video drivers within the unified driver download, which is why I've sort of been on this treasure hunt for one. Arrgh matey, a keg of to the man who finds ye treasure... errr, driver that works! I was wondering... if the onboard nVidia video hardware itself is dead and non-functional, there's no way it would even accept the driver software, right? I mean like... I've downloaded every video driver recommended, run it, seems to install perfectly, prompted to re-start my PC, and after I do... that yellow mark in Device Manager under "Other Devices"/"Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" is *still* there no matter what. So, I'm beginning to think that the oboard video hardware itself is actualy dead? Anyone with this theory?
If that's a strong theory, then it might be best for me to just go into the BIOS, disable the onboard video, and purchase / install a PCI graphics card. Everything on this PC works *perfectly fine* (I'm using it right now to make this post, in fact), except for not being able to re-install any of my games due to that video controller graphics thingy. It's driving me beyond bonkers. I think it's time for a drink! Anyone wanna meet me at the bar? My treat! ~~ Sarah |

Well Sarah, If the onboard were dead ... then you would not be using it right now .... Sorry could not resist
It's just some kinda hang up or we are chasing the wrong thing. You seem computer savy, but ... sometimes it is hard to troubleshoot like this. Do you have a friend/family member who is ... The One! . The one everyone goes to and he can almost always fix their PC? It might be , that we are just missing something, cause we are not actually in front of your PC.

Not sure what video drivers you have tried and where you got them from. Have you tried any of these? http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html (use the ones marked My T3265 w/AU31 came with version 44.03 on it so should be a good start. Before installing any drivers I would advise to uninstall (right click) the "Other Device" listed in Device Manager and restart to let Windows find the "New Hardware" again. You may have tried so many drivers that Windows is just confused now. By uninstalling and reinstalling this might bring you back to some what of a clean install state. OMT: If you do decide to install a graphic card make sure it's an AGP and not a PCI card!!! |
