Hi guys,
I have an emachines 620 with alaska 3 motherboard.Recently i installed a Radeon 9600xt agp card and im not sure ive done everything i should have.pc is workin fine but graphics no different and screen keeps goin blank for couple of seconds every so often..I looked in bios and video adapter is set to PCI,i only get option of pci or onboard(not agp) will this affect the card working properly? Also in settings on card agp will only set to 4x,does this motherboard support 8x or is 4 max?
I have got latest drivers for card.In device manager only display adapter shown is radeon and says its working properly.Have i maybe missed something to uninstall or disable?
I'd be very grateful for any help with this
thnx

I know for a fact that I had to disable onboard graphics in the device manager for mine to work properly.

I have uninstalled old card(fx5200) and device manger only showing new one. do i need to disable any of chipsets(intel 82845) or uninstall drivers.
I ask this because when lookin round for new drivers i read that chipset drivers shouldnt be installed if third party graphics card is used?

When you uninstalled the old nVidia card, did you use the add/remove hardward wizard first? If you did use the add/remove hardware wizard, prior to physically removing the card and are still having problems, you might want to try this. It's a utility to remove nVidia drivers from Windows systems. At any rate, once you're sure the nVidia drivers are off your system, uninstall the Radeon (drivers too), then reinstall it. BTW, when's the last time you completely reinstalled Windows? Sometimes old installs can be pretty buggy, especially with hardware changes. ;)

Ya know, when I first read your post I thought it might be the PSU, but it looks like the FX5200 and Radeon 9600 have virtually the same power curve. How many watts does your PSU pump out anyway? Some places say 150 and others say the 620 has a 250Watt PSU... <_< And, if you need more info about the Alaska3 MOBO specs, try here. To my best knowledge, none of the Intel 800 chipsets support AGP speeds faster than X4...for what it's worth... :huh:

yes i did remove with wizard and have totally searched files, all nvidia drivers are gone.
Not sure on psu power.
After some playin about with card and other bits seem to have slighly better graphics(not actually sure what ive done)
Ran farcry last night(was always MAJOR problem with old card) and i could run it at higher settings, but game was still laggy.
i think i may have to go with what i have for now as im runing out of options and think this may be the best the card will run on this system.
Only thing im still not sure of is bios issue, why wont it give me option of AGP in primary video adapter?(specific help at side says select AGP if AGP card is installed) and will this affect cards performance?
Thanx sentinel for your help, most appreciated :)

ps.i am thinkin of upgrading RAM from 512 to 1024,will this make gaming smoother? :huh:

I'm not the BIOS expert 'round here, but I'd have to say, yes, you'd be better off with settings for AGP (if available) in the BIOS...but don't quote me on that... The performance difference between the FX5200 and a 9600XT isn't going to be as noticable, when they're being squelched by the 4x AGP pipline (not really for gaming), but ya gotta work with the hardware at hand. You'd notice more of a performance difference if you compared them using the same game (video) settings for both, otherwise it's apples and oranges. Extra RAM is always nice, but I'm fairly certain that's not the reason Farcry is running slow. It's the AGP slot. If you were running an 8x AGP board, then yeah, the 1GB of RAM would be the way to go. With your current board, I don't think it'll make much difference in the game. Set the Radeon to "Performance" on all the advanced video settings and you'll improve your frame rates. Stay away from using antialiasing/anisotropic filtering and give the latest patches for Farcry a try...

Farcry Recommended Specs:

* Supported OS: Windows 98SE/2000/XP (only)
* Processor: AMD Athlon 2400-3000+ or Pentium 4 2-3 GHz
* RAM: 512-1024 MB
* Video Card: 128 MB GeForce 4 128 MB to GeForce FX 5950; ATI Radeon 9500-9800 XT
* Sound Card: Sound Blasterฎ Audigyฎ series
* DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b (included on disc)
* CD-ROM: 8x-16x DVD or 32x CD-ROM
* Hard Drive Space: 4 GB
* Multiplayer: Broadband with 64 Kbps upstream to play (512 Kbps upstream to host 8 players)

thanks again m8,
will try what you suggest,
maybe a new mobo is the only way to really get most out of card, get one that supports 8x.
for now i'll just have to play with it like it is,
if anyone does come up with ideas for bios prob please let me know, have utility on install disc for flashing if anyone thinks it may solve anything.
thanks again

This maybe TJ,but it this instance i feel blame lies with emachines, installing virtually unheard of mobo with cheap job lot of chipsets and lacklustre bios install that doesn't allow AGP.Dont know maybe im wrong but i know lots runnin ATI with no probs, but i dont think buying nvidia would have avoided trouble ive had :(

I'm not a betting man, but I would take that bet.....don't get me wrong, ATI has been good to me also, but it seems lots of eMachines seem to have problems with ATI cards and the problem is usually bios related....2 examples; AM37 and Napoli-2

Nvidia would have been a smooth install.......ATI cards are more problematic for all machines not just "E".....they work great in some mobos. That's just the way it is....I attribute this to Nvidia's acquisition of the Voodoo corpse.....prior to that Nvidia's track record of compatibility and ease of install was no better than ATI.
Just the facts.

BTW, ATI cards are notorious for that blinky thing!
