I finally kicked my Radeon 9200 to the curb. I just finished installing a BGF 6600 GT in my ol' girl. I must say, GTA SA is looking much better now. ;) I saw the thread about the weird colors produced by the new nVidia drivers, but so far haven't experienced any strange hues. Due to the power requirements of the 6600, I had to upgrade my PSU as well. I found a DeVanni 500 Watt unit to replace my old Allied 350 Watt PSU, but don't know much about DeVanni. Has anyone heard if they're any good? Aside from the annoying fan lighting scheme, it seems to be functioning normally. :)

Google? What's a Google? Actually, I got mixed results with that Google thingy, so I took a chance. I only needed a 400Watt PSU, so I got the 500Watt DeVanni just for the head room. No need to tax El Cheapo PSU too much (6 out of 10, according to MaximumPC). I just wondered if anyone here had experience with the brand before...

I'll keep an eye on the voltage. If it goes beyond spec by more the the acceptable 5%, I'll yank the PSU. When the systems's hot, the 3.3v feed is hovering at 3.26v and the 12v feed is between 11.71 and 11.78volts. So far so good... B)

BTW, I noticed Allied on the list of bad PSU manufacturers. I've had two of those. The one I just replaced is two years old and the other one is four years old, in a system I sold. It's current owner is still cookin' away on it. College students...always on the 'puter...

Ok, define "low-end Thermaltake". My 'build' system runs a Silent Pure Power 420w. It only cost me $40. That's far from high-end. This thing is quiet, stable, and runs cool.

I'm not the least bit afraid.

Oh, Allied must really suck. They're listed twice. :P

Just Googled "Do not buy a psu from the following companies"

Sorry to fire such a massive broadside at owners of DUBIOUSLY engineered PSUs (and you now know who you are!).
It was insensitive.
Here's hoping that old PSU of yours lasts long enough to continue this lively thread...

HAPPILY many of you will find your PSUs in the forum's recommended list. B)

I'm with ya, TJ. I read the 1st page of the link SteveP posted. Interesting that so many of those self-proclaimed "experts" are basing their opinions on sponsored web-sites, or the price of the unit.

Also note ... the latest post on that page is a year old.

I saw that identical list posted at three separate forums...copy and paste style. I thought it a little odd the different posters hadn't added their own "flair" to the "don't buy these" list. Almost as though the same individual had been responsible for all three. <_< Mind you, I don't debate the fact you get what you pay for. Most cheapo PSUs have wildly exaggerated wattage claims and a shorter over all life spans, when compared to better-respected brands. That's why I hedged my bets and went with the "500Watt" one. :)

BTW, I took no offense to the previous posts. And, for the record, the DeVanni voltage is still within spec. ;)

Hi Sentinel, I wouldn't have dished it out like that if I didn't think you could take it! You are very experienced with PCs and have my utmost respect. And you do have an unknown quantity in that PSU, is what I am saying, and do you want to chance that handsome rig of yours? I like that forum for it's clarity and decisiveness.

Buying Antec, Enermax, Fortron, Seasonic etc. is good advice. Features like power factor correction, over voltage protection, good airflow, quality cabling and connectors, quick startup, ability to deliver large currents at startup, tolerance of poor supply voltage (brown outs) and fire retarding ARE worth having. When you buy El Cheapo you don't get this, quite likely a fault condition will fritz your motherboard and processor also.

Now TD and TJ know a POS firewire card when they see one And I know power supplies from my Physics and Telecoms background, and all the shortcuts that manufacturers can take in search of cost cutting. It is not a matter of opinion that some supplies are better than others, it is simple engineering. And you get what you pay for in the end.

I will finish my rant by saying that there was nothing in that forum that I disagreed with, and you could do worse than listen to their suggestions. Heck, TD, they even like your Armageddon PSU! :D

There are lots of cheap POS power supplies out there.
There are also lots of power supplies that are more expensive because of advertising and marketing dollars spent on very pretty, full color ads and paying people to publish lists and come up with new adjectives to describe them.
Not because they are better.
The trick is too find the quality PSU that isn't hyped.
BTW, the same people that make those lists are the geniuses that say,"Don't buy an eMachine.....they suck and can't be upgraded.....and I know because I'm a computer genius and my mommy bought me a Dell"!

TJ, you lovely man! Why are we arguing!
Never mind all the general points...
What should I buy to replace the underpowered but competent Bestec 250 PSU in my Nexgen Case? Or the sad mATX in my older but still appealing model?
That's what the upgraders want to know...we should name names here!
:P

I didn't realize we were arguing??
Thanks for letting me know.

BTW, I saw a list that said not to buy Fortron??????
Anything 400w and up.....pick out what you like based on what you can afford and I bet we can get there w/ a recommendation!
I don't pick stuff out of the air that I have not used.....one good model by a mfg does not make their next model a sure thing. Does anyone really think ....there are 400 different PSU plants out there as the myriad of brands indicates????
If I use a PSU that is a good deal and works well....I share it here.
Like the deal on the Chiefmax 350wmatx from Bingopc/3btech....not too long ago!
I'm not big on BS for BS sake!

I think it's a good value....I would probably be tempted to recommend something in the 350w range at this point..... a little more head room!

Phew, I'm glad you like it because (as I'm sure you know, omnipotent OZ) I have recommended it a couple of times tonight as a bit of a bargain. Of course it is not much of an upgrade, but being a Fortron it is probably good for 350W in practise. And I love the airflow, dig that grille too.
I tell you two things I noticed from a bigger PSU, one was it started from the merest of touches on the power button, and two the tone of the machine remains constant regardless of what you do to the mouse etc.

Well, it's a real 300w at any rate.
That's the thing to consider as well......what's better at the same price?
A PSU that is rated as a 550w but is really a 450w or a 350w that is a 350w.......hmmmmmmmm.......something to ponder!

Will I have a better PSU in my X2 system? H311 YEAH! Until then... B)
