I just bought a emachinesw3050 with a built in geforce4mx. Obviously that card is old and not good anymore, so I bought a xfx6600gt agp8x card with it. Both are coming in either tomorrow or tuesday. Ive read lots of problems with people installing video cards in emachines. Ive only owned emachines all my computer life and love them, they never cause me problems. Neways, anytips before I install it? As in, how do I go bout disabling the geforce4 before putting the 6600gt? Im new to this and have never done it before, and would rather not get into a whole mess of troubles my first time! Thanks, any tips or websites with help would be appreciated! |

Your board is some what similar to the AU31 so you may want to check the End User Upgrades at TD's site for the AU31 video upgrade to see if it helps you any also. http://www.e4allinc.info/dir1/motherboards...1_end_users.htm |

K so that did not work. I disabled the old card....then plugged in the new one.....worked, i just had high resolution. So i installed the drivers from the disk and restarted now im getting a quarter black screen the rest a light blue screen......then below that a bunch of multi colored blue gray green and purples boxes.......im not sure whats going on here, and what the heck I do? Btw, it keeps blinking every 10 seconds or so to a black screen then back to that!? Help?! |

Ok....it stopped that after about 4-5 minutes, then restarted with a black screen that said nvidia corp w/e and 128.0mb ram, then restarted normally......now i actually see the mouse clicker and its ata bunch of random black and blue squares.....just restarted and did the nvidia and normal boot up again.....(btw the microsoft windows xp and all the words when it shows the startup look fine and nothing wrong with it.....maybe the card has to do this to do some tests??)....still seeing the cursor and it looks like its half black with almost like blue and black squares that almost form like half of a building kind of deal? Now its loading something but still nothing.......im so damn confused.......are these tests or what and why was it working fine just on high resolution before I installed the drivers......hopefully ill get help asap thanks |

I would try going into the BIOS at startup. Probably use the delete key as soon as you turn it on. Then go into the setup and see if the AGP is enabled and the onboard video is disabled. Also check to see what the aperture is, probably want to go at least 1/2 of the MB the card has. Check any BIOS settings for video and make sure they are set correctly or enabled for the AGP, usually there is an option in there for first display device, check that as well. These are just some things to look at, I am not sure what BIOS you have or options but hopefully you find something in there that was not setup correctly. 2 other things to think about: Is your PSU big enough for that card and does it have any extra connections besides just plugging it into the AGP slot. The other would be to check and make sure it is seated correctly into the agp slot, could be off just a hair and not getting a full connection, may try reseating it. Just some thoughts, hope that helps. J |

Done all of that.....i took it out and continuing to use the grappy geforce 4mx integrated gpu.......i just dont understand why the windows logo and the emachines logo look fine, but as soon as it would go to the welcome screen or to the desktop it gets all weird?? BTW it says phoenix when I enter the Bios. Im afraid to uninstall the geforce 4 drivers cuz i dont have them on a disk or dont know where to find them (The reboot cd's 4 of em them dont say what they have on them grrrrrr.) |

BTW....to get this to work i held down f8 and it brought me to something and i clicked enable vga and it worked so far like this. |

Are you running XP? If so I would go ahead and uninstall the drivers to both and reboot, let the machine pick up a generic driver when it does the plug and play thing at reboot and then go in and load the drivers that came with it. May have a small conflict in the drivers with 2 sets installed. See if uninstalling them and rebooting may make a difference, if not you should still be able to get your drivers back via plug and play to at least get back in if this does not do the trick. I have run into somewhat similiar issues and that worked but it is up to you if you want to try. On the disks you speak of there is typically a driver folder on 1 of them for video, audio etc.... I would make sure just in case first. The good thing is in most cases you can get back and trouble shoot with the basic plug and play drivers in most cases. I would however make sure that is also enabled in the BIOS before you start. Sorry, just trying to cover most of the bases. Hope this helps. |

I think we were posting at the same time. LOL The F8 probably got you into safe mode which will use the most basic stuff for trouble shooting, thus the low resolution. Sounds like the card is working somewhat but still may have a conflict somewhere. I would still suggest to get rid of the drivers and start over. IMO. |

Forget the stupid drivers that came with it......let XP get you going, then go to the Nvidia site and download the newest drivers for your card and chipset. God only knows what crap drivers came with it! |

The Nvidia geforce drivers are unified so you should be able to download at the nvidia site to get that back up and running. It seems odd that the plug and play drivers are allowing a better resolution than after you install the ones that came with the card. I would go to Nvidia's site and pull the latest driver for the geforce 4. From there I would also download the latest driver for your new card and do it over again and install it, if that does not work I might check into seeing if you got a bum card. Sounds like an odd issue or a hardware conflict maybe or an obscure setting in the bios but that does not account for it working until you install the so called correct drivers. |

TJ beat me to it. Sorry about that, but I think we are on the same page, get the drivers from the source. Hopefully, one or the other get you back up to snuff or fully upgraded. |

Im running it on a 3-4 year old crt monitor......could that be the problem since the refresh rates n stuff are low?? Cuz i donwloaded the drivers off of the nvidia website.....and when i restarted after install it actually let me go to the desktop instead of huge blocky stuff......but the desktop had lines all through it and was kind of blurry.....btw the drivers I downloaded i just went to nvidia.com then to drivers download then selected geforce and tnt2 then windows xp and it gave me only one listing and it seems it covers them all? Or is there a specific place i can go to find the xfx geforce 6600gt drivers.......so lost. |

Right click on your desktop and check your resolution and then go to the advanced tab and check your refresh rate. Maybe you are running a little more than that monitor can handle. Back off the resolution some and the refresh rate to about 75 if it is more than that, worth a shot. As far as the drivers, they are unified on nvidia cards but there is likely one written specifically for yours for optimal performance. |

Well on the geforce4mx i can run it on 800 or 1200 or w/e it is and its on 32 bit. But, as soon as I put in the card but dont install the drivers I can do the same thing, but it just comes up as a default driver with no display adapaters or anything no 6600gt or mx4. But, as soon as I install the drivers from the cd or from online it craps out and only lets me go in vga mode. In vga mode on the adapter thing it doesnt let me go above 60hz refreshrate or change from the lowest resolution and 8bit color.........so i have no clue whats going on. I have a monitor from the summer a lcd flat screen that im going to try tomorrow morning.......dont know if that will work, but if it does......well then ill post it.....anymoer hints you guys can think of? |
