The 9800 pro is a cracking card, it will play pretty much any game out today. I'm not sure, but I think the 6600GT may be a better card for about the same money, but someone will have to correct me on this

The 6600GT will outpeform the 9800pro by a decent margin. If you can spend the extra $20-30, the 6600GT is the way to go.

Make sure you get a version with 1000mhz memory. nVidia reference is only 900mhz, but that is so that the AGP and PCI-e versions of the boards are at the same price point. The AGP needs some extra circuitry which doesn't really affect performance but does add a bit of cost, so the lower speed memory is supposed offset the price difference. However, the cost differential between 900 and 1000 is now insignifcant, so you can find the "full speed" versions at the same price as the 900 variety.

Go to http://www.newegg.com/app/manufact.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1 and put in chipset:6600GT, RAM size:128 MB, Interface:AGP8X/4X and you should find a bunch less than $200. It is the RAM speed that should be 1000, not the core speed.

The best way to get a recommendation on a vid card would be based on what you want/can spend??? Otherwise folks will be all over the place.....you want the best bang for the buck....but it's your bucks.....so set the table.

It will void your warranty, and they will be able to tell as on the back of the emachine case, there will be a small silver sticker over the removable side panel and the main case chassis. Computers are now reliable enough that if they don't come DOA, they will last for probably at least 5 years. I have a Packard Bell in the loft that is 10 years old, and it is still going :P

And with emachines notoriously bad support, you are probably better off just replacing stuff yourself if you are capable. You've replaced the most likely problem--the ps--so more than likely you will be ok.

Has anyone gotten an nVidia 6600GT card running on the W3050 emachine yet? I too am thinking about upgrading to this card.

I'd rather not upgrade the 300W power supply yet (my new W3050 should arrive today so I'd rather keep the PS for now :P) and I was wondering if anyone has had any success running the 6600GT with the stock power supply.

I was thinking of pulling out the 56K PCI modem to save some power too, if things get tight :D

On a related technical front, is there anything special one needs to do to use the 6600GT AGP? Is it necessary to disable the onboard video in some way, and if so is that done via the BIOS?

Cheers!
