I bought an Xtasy Radeon 9200 SE 128 MB PCI version a while ago but when I try to play next generation games, they run pretty slow. Halo and Doom 3 run at like 5 FPS when there's a lot of enemies around. I've noticed that the best PCI video card I can find nowadays is a Geforce 5700 LE. If I upgrade to it (one with a 128-bit memory bus) would it give me a good improvement? Or should I just wait till I get a new PC (which might not be until as soon as 2 years from now  ) cause I heard about how crappy PCI slots and Celerons are for gaming. Oh btw heres my other system specs: Emachines T2682 2.6 ghz Celeron (not Celeron D) 256 PC2700 DDR 250w Beltec PSU |

I think it will take more than a new graphics card for those games to run well. I'm seeing the need for better PSU, more memory. I'd wait and invest $ into a new computer. |

The celeron in your system and the graphics card are not realy gamer quality. The celeron is VERY slow in games, and the graphics card is more or less the slowest you can buy today. While you don't have a gaming system, your best bet is to go with a better video card. The 5700LE is as good as it will get for you, but you can overclock it and get some decent performance out of it. You could probably upgrade your proc as well--I'm not sure what motherboard is in your system (check on www.e4allinc.info when it is back up), but others have been able to upgrade their Cele systems to a 3.06 P4 with HT, which would be a huge upgrade in performance for you. |

Don't listen to anyone who tells you that Celerons are useless for gaming. I have managed to run Doom 3 & HL2 with pretty good results albeit on medium settings. You will find that with changing to the 5700LE the results you will get will be outstanding. In most of todays games the graphics card is crucial. I'm afraid that the 9200SE that you have just won't cut it. I remember when i purchased the 5200 that i have it was a toss up between that & the 9200SE. I'm glad i went with the 5200 in the end. |

What about my PSU, will my PSU cut it for the 5700 LE (PCI version)? It's a Beltec 250w |

It really depends on what games you want to play, and under what settings. I was able to play HL2 on my T2958 with a 5200 pci video card, and I had a gig of ram, but only on the lowest settings, and not all that smooth. But I wasn't satisfied with the results, and built a new system. It did work though, so if you think you'll be satisfied with playing the games on lower settings, it should work fine. If you know you'll just want it better once you get it working (like I did), better to save up for a new build. It looks like you can upgrade to the P4 3.06 533 w/ HT. But keep in mind that with an investment in this new proc, a new graphics card, and a new ps, you are approaching the cost of a completely new system. The proc will run you around $250 at the cheapest, the graphics card--$60, and a decent quality PS will be $30 to $40. BTW, a Celeron is not a dead end processor for games, but on a relative performance basis, it falls significantly behind other processors. |
