I want to speed up this machine.. It comprises of Celeron 2.3Ghz, Imperial 845GL chipset with mPGA-478 socket. I would like to install a P4 2.4 Ghz. I believe that 400Mhz is the max in this case and am not sure which processor to buy or where to buy it from . Also in apgrading the cpu would I also have to upgade the 512MB of DDR-SDRAM Your Thoughts or ideas on this matter would be Helpful Groucgo633 |

OFFICIAL SEARCH ENGINE.. & BIOS BADBOY..!

Welcome Groucho633, It sounds like you on the right track. Your board with the 845GL chipset is limited to a 400Mhz FSB CPU up to I think the 2.8Ghz P4. As to where to buy in the UK I'm sorry but I can't help you there. If you were in the US I'd say newegg.com. There's a few other here that may be able to help with a supplier/location. Good Luck |

Hi Groucho633. Before buying I would ask what gains to expect from both options you mention. I think that doubling the RAM would be more cost effective than changing the Celeron for a P4. It depends what you want to do with your PC, and as the RAM would be a good anyway I would add that first (from Crucial, it's rock bottom price at the moment, about £42 for 512MB delivered). Then, having seen the gain from that I would look again at the processor speed. There is a difference but not a massive one. The price of a 2.8 P4 is still around the £100 mark but I did a quick search and they are all 533FSB. You might get an older processor from a computer fair or shop, but the online merchants all want to sell you the latest model. Richard |

Here you go m8. Bit pricey though but i have been assured by their sales team that the 2.8 will run on the 845GL board no problem. I've also been told that they're original OEM cpu's. |
