Can't install new heatsink

Anyone know why I can't seem to install a 3rd party socket 478 heatsink on my Soyo mobo? The stock intel works every time. I tried to install a Thermaltake Spark 7, and I don't get any beep codes, nothing. Put the intel back on, works fine. I'm thinking what diff does it make? Same thing happened when I tried to install another brand.

All I can figure is that the new fan on the Thermaltake requires a 4pin, not 3 pin. So they have a 3 pin that does T to the mobo for fan monitoring I assume. But the computer won't boot, so I'm assuming it's thinking there's not a fan running or something and therefore won't boot? I'm baffled.

Anyways, if there's no fix, I can live fine with the Intel, anyone want to buy a Thermaltake Spark 7 Xaser edition cheap? LOL. I wiped thermal grease on the packaging and probalby can't return it. *duh*

Correct.
The 3rd pin is the rpm sensor in the fan. You'll need a fan that has that 3rd wire or there may be an option in the bios to turn that feature off.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Couldn't find any bios options to change it (big surprise with the Soyo), so I guess I'll just be happy with the stock Intel. It's doing the job well enough and I'm tired of changing the heatsink for a while. Had to put the old one back in just to go online and ask my question. <_<

Unfortunately, the Intel fan is built right into the cage of the Intel heatsink, at least for the 3.0 prescott. Maybe they were idiot proofing the thing so you couldn't put the fan on backwards or something?

But, my curiosity got the best of me, and I tried it anyway, since the two heatsinks were the same height. Unfortunately the cage was just barely too narrow to fit on the Thermaltake heat sink, so no go, it would have broken the cage had I tried to install it.

However, I'm quite sure I could get another fan and use it instead. Or just keep the heatsink for an unknown future project. I'm not out much $.
