If you are like most of the people in the Free World and are getting "Internet Connect Failed" error while trying to update AVG 7, try this. http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php...ge=15#msg-21053 BTW: I am Clane5 ... I see Gategem has found the forum too. |

Taz, I experienced trouble lately with AVG 7.0 also. Although it is not applied to the lates MS software (i.e., Win78), when tying to get the latest update from AVG, I got a blue dialog box withe the update. 3 buttons were present to update: Internet, Folder, and Cancel. I pressed Internet and...nothing happened. This is to communicate that people must click on the blue dialog box to select it before clicking on the Internet button. Then the program executed its function. We did not need to do that before, as it was automatic in Version 6.0. I don't know what AVG developers changed, but for sure there are problems lately. Unfortunately, since it is free, we cannot complain loudly. Let's hope the coming antivirus revisions will work better. Titi |

I left a nasty message in that forum thread. Anti-Virus software that has trouble updating the Virus Definition file is a disaster waiting to happen and even if it is free it is useless. Not everybody has the ability to make the necessary modifications in this thread or manually download the update file to a folder and run updates and select the "folder" radio button. Sometimes it cannot open the connection and even determine that there are updates available. So the Icon in the tray does not go gray and try to open the update connection at another time. What I recommended to my sister, who has no computer smarts, is to change the update time in the Control Center Scheduler to between 10 and 11 pm. There is less activity on the update site at this time. |

By the way if you try to make the recommended changes to the Host file, first copy the host file and then go to the original host file and change the attributes so the file is no longer read only, make the changes, and then reset the attributes back to read only. |

Tazman, I have a question that I would like to ask you. I disabled LMHosts lookup on the TCP/IP connection to prevent WinXP from spinning its wheels when I launched an application and the Host is not there because there is no LAN Host Manager on my network. Also for security reasons I disabled the NETBIOS over TCP. Do you know if this will stop WinXP from reading the Hosts file that I modified? |

Well... AVG did it again! Works erratically, in other words, AVG 7.0 does not work anymore. Titi |

I just updated a bit ago, took like 3 times and I tried turning off my FWall back and forth until I finally got it going. Took like 4mb's of download. Not sure what their issue is but stick with it for a bit and you can get the update, there are some manual updates you can download as well and save to folder and try that, unfortunately I have not had much luck with that process. Just thought I would put my 2 cents (or less) in since I have been running AVG 7.0 for a while too with no problem until recently. |

My AVG 7 Is doing the same thing. I notice it more during the daytime hours. If I go back and run the updater later in the evening it usually downloads and installs with no problems. Sounds like we are all in the same boat, so if we all row together maybe Grisoft will fix the problem soon. See you at their forum! |

I am happy with their explanation of the problem I'm having. (READ BELOW) For those of you who aren't happy with your free version all I can say is " Go somewhere else!" They didn't have to offer a free service in the first place. I myself am very happy that they did and will continue to use it and recommend to others that they use it too. UPDATE PROBLEMS? -- LOOK HERE FIRST Posted by: rdsok - Moderator (IP Logged) Date: January 28, 2005 01:57AM If you've received updates in the past and are now either getting errors or incomplete downloads, then the problem will be because the update servers has been overloaded. Please be patient and try your update later. Your tray icon will turn gray to indicate that AVG knows there is an update available and when you are finally able to update, it will return to normal. Your AVG will still protect you, you simply won't have the very latest updates. The free version doesn't have access to the high bandwidth/high capacity update servers like the paid one does. If you have never been able to get an update make sure you've setup your firewall as described in Firewall Settings for AVG Other possible reasons include not having your proxy server settings correct (if you use one) or your dialup settings for AVG's Update Manager aren't setup. If you are in need of updating you also have the option to manually update, but this isn't recommended because it means downloading larger files when you may only need a minor update. To manually update follow the instructions in this post here How to Manually Update AVG. |

They have become very popular especially with the new version which is very close to their full version....if you know how to use it. The servers are overloaded.....remember this is a Eastern European country/company.......if you access the updates after 10 pm EST or later you should have no problems....I don't. Set up the scheduler for midnite or something! Or go buy Norton and have a mess on your hands.

Despite having also myself a few hiccups with AVG 7.0 and pesting about it, I share this opinion. Grisoft gave a reasonable, decent answer here, and if their site become congested, this is because of a successful antivirus site (and free). The updates were working perfectly a few weeks ago, so we need to forgive Grisoft and show some patience (including myself). Titi |

Yep, you just gotta expect to get lower service when you get something for free. As far as I am concerned I think they put out a fine product, better than most you can buy. Back in the day, I used to be on dialup with freeweb and when the server got overload it would start booting people, but heck it was free and that was when dial up could not be touched for less than $25 a month. |

I had no problems updating this morning. One thing Grisoft could do is to charge say $10 a year for updates for the free product. This is a small amount to pay and it might give them sufficient funds to increase the bandwidth of the free update site. |

Just a follow-up: AVG did work tonight, and the virus update automatically performed at 8:48pm (which is 3:48am next day in Europe). So your recommendation to set the update to night time is working. Thanks again, Titi |
