Boot up problem; Am I doing the right thing?

Hi All,

This is my first post so Hi to all :)

PC Details:
EMACHINES 370 UK model
Intel Celeron 1.8ghz
256mb DDR ram
60 GB Hard Drive

I am having problems with the initial boot up and would appreciate advice on whether I am going about the problem solving the right way.

After switch on the PSU and CPU fans come on after 10 secs or so the monitor and CPU fan switches off and the pc is dead apart from the PSU cooling fan which remains on.

Problem solving:
1. Removed and reseated memory - Same problem at start up
2. Renewed PSU - Same problem at start up
3. Disconnected HD, CDRW and IDE cables from MOBO - All fans remained on and I was able to enter the BIOS.
4. Fitted another HD which I know is working and switched on - Same problem at start up
I now think that it is either the memory or the Mobo that is goosed.

What do you all think?

Regards

Jim

Jim,
Welcome.
Just to be sure/clear...you replaced your old power supply with a new higher wattage model?
Any add on components from the original spec?
Any events proceed this .....power outages....electrical storms?
Might be worth trying another stick of memory.

Hi TJ,

250W PSU replaced with a 300W. As the PSU proved to be okay I have put the original 250W PSU back in.

This pc is my cousins so I am not completly sure of the history.

The weather here has been pretty bad and I know he doesn't have a surge protector fitted.

I think that it is the memory thats gone. But I can't get a new stick until late next week.

It would be good to get a second opinion from someone more knowledgable than I on the pc front.

Regards,

Jim

You say the CPU fan switches off? As soon as the CPU fan switches off, BYE BYE CPU, it probably will be fried, hot and crispy as TJ says

Not what I want to here!

When the CPU fan stopped all other systems stopped at the same time except the PSU fan.

Will this mean that there is still a chance that the CPU is goosed even though everything had shutdown?

Jim :(

Not sure, I have never had a fried CPU. If the PSU was still supplying power to the motherboard after everything has shut down, you probably have a fried CPU. My best advice is try the CPU in another PC and see if it works then

You need to go through the process of elimination on this one, based on your comments.
Try the cpu and memory in other systems or try another cpu and memory on this mobo!
Whatever is easier and makes economic sense.
A hot and crispy cpu is a possibility....but not definite yet!

I suggest not putting a different CPU into this motherboard until you are sure that it just won't fry a 2nd cpu.

As others noted, the cpu fan turning off is not a good thing. I would try turning the computer on, let it go though its problem cycle, and then see if the processor heat sink is getting very warm. If electricity is still flowing through the proc, it will get hot.

Luckily, the 1.8 Cele processor you have doesn't draw a overwhelming amount of power. A passive heatsink may be enough to keep it cool when not under use, so it might be ok.
