CPU Question; anyone know about L2 cache?

Anyone know if a p4 2.4 400MHz FSB with a 512L2 cache will work with ImperialG or GL? MoBo support says it supports 256L2 cache. Anyone tried this, can get a p4 2.0 with 256 for about same price if the 512 won't work.
Currently have a Celeron 2.0.
I have looked at e4all, and Intel, and google, but no answer to that one so far... ;)
Thanks,,

Thanks for your help Libner, I appreciate it. I am just a little anxious about spending the money if it wont work. It is hard to find out any info on L2 cache and the rate of transfer on a MoBo, they will tell you whats supported but what not happens if you excede the cache amount. I will probably go with the 2.0 and the 256, just to be safe. The pentium should be better than the celeron anyway.

I would think you should be more concerned about bus speed and voltage rather than L2 cache.
What are the sSpec #'s on the 2 processors?

400MHz FSB is what I am sticking with, I was looking at a p4 2.2 or 2.4 400MHz FSB (both of which were saying 1525, or 1.530 core voltage)
My Celeron is currently a 400MHz FSB and 1525 core voltage.
I've never changed a processor before, but am familiar with the inside of a case, I've changed cards, memory, powersupply, drives, so I thought I would try the cpu next. Or actually cpu, thermal transfer goo, and fan. :-)

I also wanted to stay with a cpu that did not require a BIOS flash (not ready for that yet).

My MoBo doesnt support HT technology, so I am staying with the 400MHz FSB, but I don't know how L2 cache works (if the MoBo supports 256 L2, and I wanted 512 L2) so I thought I would ask if someone had tried it and knew if it would work.

Anyway, Once again thanks for all the help and responses!

L2 cache is kind of like memory....usually more is better.
It's my understanding it's not whether or not the mobo supports more L2 cache but rather does the mobo support the architecture of the chip (core design, voltage, multipliers, bus speed, etc.).
If all things are equal between the 2 processors except the amount of L2 cache, go with the more cache.
Again, what are the sSpec #'s on the 2 processors?

Currently have one of these 3, (dont know which yet) SL6SW,SL6LC, or SL6HY.

Looking at getting one of these, SL6SB, SL6GS,or the 2.0(SL5UH).

Anyway, I think I'm on the right track. Took me a little while to figure out what sSpec#'s were, sorry.

Any suggestions if I'm not on the right track are appreciated.

Comparing processor specs I believe the SL6GS would be a safe bet.

Where did this 2.0Ghz SL5UH come from? That a Willamette built on the .18 micron core! That's probably slower then the Celeron your running now!!!!

Thanks for all the help Guys! I really appreciate it. I ordered the SL6GS today!
I will let you guys know how it turns out and will update the forum for someone elses future reference.

Well, it took me a while to get to the upgrade, but I did it today! Everything seems to be working fine. CPU has been installed and running under loads (light to Heavy) for about 3 hours so far with no problems.

Since it was my first processor change I mainly wanted to give it a while after I booted it to make sure I didn't have any heat related issues (was worried if I got the thermal goo stuff right) but everything seems fine. Ran some intensive games and every scan known to me at least.

Thanks for all the help guys! this forum and the sister site e4all.com is awesome. I would have never have been able to do it without your support.

On a side note for TD25X, I picked up a T6000 the other day. It seems to have a harddrive problem though, so I am thinking of switching to a SATA drive. Have you gotten around to Flashing your BIOS yet? The eMachine BIOS really sucks! I went on the MSI sight and the MSI OEM version seems so much better. Any suggestions?

Thanks again all!!!

Glad to hear of your successful upgrade.

I have not flashed my BIOS for my T6000 yet.
If you are going to run SATA drives, you'll have to either get a SATA card or solder in SATA connectors (they were hard to for me find) to the mobo and hope (at this point) that the traces are active and the MSI bios enables it.

Really.
Pull the side cover off and take a look for yourself.
The retail version of the mobo has them, eMachines version doesn't have them....

Oh well, I guess that really does not surprise me, I guess I am going to get another MoBo and use this t6000 for spare parts. while I'm building a new system.
