I just installed a K6-III/400 into the eTower 366c, but the BIOS is reporting the CPU as a K6-III/400. I tried to follow the K6-2+/3+ procedures, but they weren't totally accurate... so, after poking around for a while this is how I have it running now: SW1 Off SW2 Off SW3 Off SW4 Off J2 1-2 J9 2-3 J3 1-2 J4 1-2 J5 1-2 J11 1-2 J12 2-3 J13 1-2 What am I missing here? BTW, I did upgrade the BIOS to the Trigem Delhi-III motherboard AMI BIOS Version 1.20 (04/26/99) with patch J.1 for AMD K6-2+ and K6-III+ support (04/04/2003) by Jan Steunebrink. |

Well....I think a K6-III/400 is supposed to be reported by the bios as a K6-III/400. What chip did you really put in there so we can help you? You can't turn a regular K-III into a K3+ by magic. |

Oops... I meant to say that it's being reported as a K6-III/300 in the BIOS. That definitely makes a difference. I don't have a Plus... just using the BIOS that would recognize it if it was. |

If memory serves me correctly....you have that cpu set up at FSB 83mhz,ratio 3.5 and with a voltage of 2.0. I believe that cpu requires either 2.2 or 2.4 volts(should be on the cap). The dipswitch settings for 2.2v are: SW1 Off SW2 On SW3 Off SW4 Off You also need to reset the jumpers for 4x100=400mhz. 100mhz FSb settings: J2 1-2 J9 1-2 J3 1-2 J4 1-2 J5 2-3 4.0 ratio: J11 2-3 J12 1-2 J13 2-3 That's a K3-400....Good luck! From what I remember, the K6-III and K6-III+ are the same chip design, but the III is on a 25 nm die and the III+ is on an 18 nm die. Basically, they provide exactly the same performance, but the III+ should be a better overclocker and should produce less heat due to lower power requirements. D |

There are some other differences...such as PowerNow....that's why the original bios would recognize a plain K3 but not a K2+/K3+. |

Excellent... that was exactly the info I was looking for and couldn't find anywhere. The specs at the AMD site said 2.1 - 2.3 volts, so I figured I had some room for error. It's not working, but at least I can run it at 300 MHz. Thanks anyway, TJ! |

There are two flavors of the K3-400, one runs at 2.2 volt the other at 2.4 volt...see below. K6-III-400AFR 2.2V (2.1V~2.3V) 2.4V 3.3V) K6-III-400AHX 2.4V (2.3V~2.5V) 2.6V 3.3V You have to look at the silver cap/heatsink on your processor to tell which one you have. In order to run them at 400mhz you need to set the voltage correctly....if you under volt, they will run at a lower speed like 300mhz but most likely not at 400mhz. Two other caveats on the Delhi III: Some of the boards would not do a full 100mhz FSB only 95mhzFSB stable, which is okay.... set it that way. Some folks are confused by the orientation of the jumpers and reverse the settings...it's worth a double check. If you set up the voltage and jumpers correctly and have the 2.2 voltage version of the K3-400 you probably will get it to run at 450 as well. I don't know where you got the chip.....but it should do at least 400 unless it's been severely abused and left for dead. TJ |

Well, this is definitely an abused CPU (one of the corners was actually chipped when I got it, and the thermal grease that was on it seems to have eaten away some of the print on it), but everything seems to be stable at 300 MHz now. I will play with it, though. I was barely able to read the thing, but it's the 2.4 volt version... what are the settings for that? You wouldn't happen to have the tables with all the jumper and switch settings and their configurations, would you? |

Ah, but I don't need to overclock... just have a stable platform to put BSD or Linux on. |

That explains some things.... the old 2.4 volt would not be able to run at 400mhz with it's voltage set at 2.0v. Bernard has already provided all the settings in the post above. TJ
