If you're one of about 200 million people using older versions of Windows and you want the latest security enhancements to Internet Explorer, get your credit card ready.

Microsoft this week reiterated that it would keep the new version of Microsoft's IE Web browser available only as part of the recently released Windows XP operating system, Service Pack 2. The upgrade to XP from any previous Windows versions is $99 when ordered from Microsoft. Starting from scratch, the operating system costs $199.

That, analysts say, is a steep price to pay to secure a browser that swept the market as a free, standalone product.

"It's a problem that people should have to pay for a whole OS upgrade to get a safe browser," said Michael Cherry, analyst with Directions on Microsoft in Redmond, Wash. "It does look like a certain amount of this is to encourage upgrade to XP."

Microsoft affirmed that its recent security improvements to IE would be made available only to XP users.

"We do not have plans to deliver Windows XP SP2 enhancements for Windows 2000 or other older versions of Windows," the company said in a statement. "The most secure version of Windows today is Windows XP with SP2. We recommend that customers upgrade to XP and SP2 as quickly as possible."

Thank you very much to Microsoft. I guess our older machines are now officially "obsolete"?

Mozilla is a great browser. I haven't used IE for almost 2 years, except for pages that won't handle Mozilla, but they are a rarity anymore. B)

I think the whole idea of Microsoft not supporting their older versions is a crock of shit! Mr. Gates preaches security and PC safety but doesn't want to practice what he preaches. I think if he really meant what he says, he would keep updates and patches available for all versions of Windows. It all boils down to the almighty $$$$ which he has more than enough of. Not everyone can run right out and plop down X amount of dollars for new software and a new system that will support it. And he complains about software piracy. No wonder it's done. Most people can't afford the $$$$. I still have an old laptop with Windows 95 on it. I still fire it up every so often just to see if it works. At one time it was top of the line. But now it's almost useless. I guess thats progress.
Who will be next to practice this type of business? Can you imagine if auto makers would start this? Buy a new car and in 5 years take it back to the dealer for repairs and find out they don't support or fix that year automobile anymore. You must buy a new one.
I just hope the next time Mr. Gates decides to " Fly The Friendly Skies " he checks to make sure his plane is not more than 5 years old. Wouldn't it be hell if the airlines and the builder of that plane stopped maintaining it because it was only 5 years old? That would be a crash that would take more than a boot disk or recovery disk to fix. And I'm sure some little guy down the line would get the blame for it and not the big guys at the top.

I have wanted to get this off my chest for sometime now. Thank you for your time.
