My son is bugging me to download Shareaza. I've looked it over and it seems to be a reasonable P2P system but I am still hesitant. It appears from their forums that I would have to use a different Firewall than ZoneAlarm Pro with it. We use WINMX so I do have some P2P experience.

Anyone have experience with Shareaza?

Stick with winmx. I have found that it is much more stable and a lot faster on completing down loads .

If ZAP will allow port forwarding of UDP port 4661 (?) then it should work fine . Shareaza uses the edonkey network and this port is needed for the most effective file transfers . I don't know about Shareaza but this is the case with eMule that also uses the same network . Emule is a free client app. with no spyware or strings . No it does not play well with ZAF .

I've used Emule and WinMX and like both . The main difference with Emule is the ability to share your files on the Edonkey network while not allowing other users to look at your shared files unless you want them to . This seems to be the same with Shareaza and most the Sourceforge projects are rock solid . The added networks could be a plus for those hard to find files . As with WinMX the more popular a file is the easier it is to find and this affects the download speed . Be aware that a lot of the files are in archive formats (.zip , .rar , .ace , ect. ) so have your AV up to date and scan these archives . I haven't had any problems but you never know .

Update : Got curious and decided to check it out . Pretty nice GUI . The added networks do return more files . I decided to take a pass on it though . In the hour or so I let it run my hard drive(s) never stopped . I don't know what it was doing since there were no uploads or downloads in that time . I don't think the constant thrashing to the HD(s) would be a good thing . I will stay with WinMX and Emule . Of course YMMV .
