AVAST YE ... DEAD MEN DON'T BITE!

I spent the evening installing a new 80 gig HD and then OS and stuff and a DVD RW. My old Maxtor is starting to have troubles, came up with a few bad sectors so I decided to get a new one. BTW have any of you guys running XP gone into disk manager and changed your drives from basic to dynamic? If not you might wanna check it you ... I did and got a noticable preformance boost. |

Taz, I've been trying to find "disk manager" on my system so I could figure out what you are referring to. I can't find "disk manager" on my system. What's it under? Cate |

Thanks Lubner. That's what I needed. It's interesting that while I do have XP Pro - yet again the instructions from Microsoft don't match my system (I think TJ mentioned that I may have told the system I wanted it to look like 98SE but I thought I changed that). This is what they instruct: How to Convert a Basic Disk to a Dynamic Disk To convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk: Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. In the left pane, click Disk Management. In the lower-right pane, right-click the basic disk that you want to convert, and then click Convert to Dynamic Disk. This is what my steps are: Logged on as Administrator Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Administrative Tools. Click Computer Management. In the left pane, click Disk Management From there I've got it. Just now sure if I should do it yet. I think I was confused because Taz called it Disk Manager. Taz? You installed and partitioned my XP Pro. Do you think converting from basic to Dynamic Disk will improve performance on my e-Monster 600? Cate |

Yes ... it's kinda like going from fat 16 to fat 32 to ntfs. It changes the way windows stores and accesses the data. By doing it more efficiently this will improve preformance and disk space usage. Caution: It is not reversable unless you delete the disk, repartition and reformat. Also it only works with Win 2000 and Win XP Pro. So if you run a dual boot system (IE Win XP Pro & Win 98) you cannot do this. |
