Did you make sure the float valve clearences were set right ? the force of the gravity feed cuold be doing it . May also be a fault filter . Hard to say with out being able to hear it .

i'm such a newb when it comes to wrenching that i don't know how to do that yet...turns out that when i reattached the choke slider to the choke plunger (notice that i said plunger; singular) on the carbs, i overlooked the fact that there were two plungers (i thought the one extended through both carbs...pays to look closely). so the left plunger wasn't closing all the way (the other part of the slider was hitting the right plunger, so it wasn't able to shut), and the right plunger wasn't being pulled out at all. after i realized this, you have never seen anyone tear down their motorcycle so fast. everything's back to normal now (idles at 1300 rpms), cept when i choke it, it chokes to 4k rpms (i could just be remembering wrong, but i thought i remembered it choking at 3k before). took it out for a spin and it runs great. also while i was in there i removed the egr valve (routed the two crankcase breathers together, pinched off the tube going to it from the right carb), so it doesn't backfire on decel any more. so now the only thing that has me slightly worried is the 4k rpm choke. what do you think? also i need to get a new set of header gaskets; the right one is leaking just enough air to hear it (you can't really feel it even if you stick your hand right in front of it).

anyway just got a haynes manual in the mail today, so between that and all the cool people on this and the other board, i'll be ready to ride two wheels to our next emachiner's convention.
