Doesn't look like I missed much tonight ... Son had the puter for a while tonight and then we sat up talking until just a bit ago. Geez, ever try to explain certain movies to a 13 year old? We had been talking about Quentin Tarantino and he asked about "Pulp Fiction" - after explaining that he asked about "Clockwork Orange" because a friend had seen it and I won't let him see it yet, that movie is just too bizarre for him to see at this point. Maybe in a few years. Yesh, that was a hard one to explain as to why, when it's an "old" movie, why I won't let him see it until he's older. That movie is just too much for some young minds. It's nice we are able to talk about anything and everything, but sometimes he just challenges my mind more than I ever expected him to at just 13!

On a good note - I put in the new graphics card fan that Lubner was so wonderful to acquire from VisionTek and send me! I should say, my son put it in. He insisted he was ready to start doing this kind of stuff, so I backed off and let him (while watching over his shoulder). The install went fine except for one small detail - it took almost 30 minutes to get the dang screws to seat right! Of course, this was his first time trying to put something so small in place ... I finally said, PLEASE let me just try to place them for you! He relented and I was able to seat the screws. He finished the job. Fan is working great but I think he was disappointed that he couldn't do it all himself.

Lubner, thanks for mailing me the fan. It's working like a champ, and very quietly. :)

Yeah, 9th grade sounds about right, but he's in 7th. Reading the book and seeing the movie (Clockwork Orange) are two totally different experiences. The movie was very well done, but some scenes are just too intense for me to let him see just yet.

Speaking of Fahrenheit 451, he has read the book and I just recently bought the DVD. We plan on watching it tonight! He has already read 1984, Brave New World, Cats Cradle, The End of Eternity, and The Gods Themselves. I think he's a bit ahead on the reading list for high school!

Thanks for the contrats on the fan install. Yeah, you're right, it wasn't hard - just a major pain trying to get the tiny little screws to go in straight between the fins!

What's worse than ring around the collar? ...Crystal in the head.

Instead of letting him watch the movie, which I agree is probably a bit much for a 13 year old -- why not let him read the book? The book is much better.

1984 and fahrenheit 451 were (are) awesome books. 1984 took a little bit to pick up speed (also because of my age, i'm used to more modern styles of writing, be that good or bad), but after it did, i couldn't put it down. 451 was awesome, beginning to end, only thing i didn't like was that it was far too quick of a read. the only book i've read more quickly i think was elie wiesel's "night", which i read in like an hour and a half. next on my reading list are brave new world (even i can't believe i haven't read it yet) and confederacy of dunces. also the giver by lois lowry was excellent (even though it's targeted at a younger audience, i loved it and have read it over and over).

anyway jeremy, here's my post on the kawasaki 500 ezboard forum, posted on friday:

me

i had a piece of debris in my carbs (which meant that the left carb float was giving me too much gas, and didn't run right until i hit 9k rpms) last week, and had to take them apart to clean them and get it out. got everything put back together, and my bike ran great. on my way to work that night i was thinking about how it had been a little hard to start, and realized that i had forgotten to reattach the choke slider that attaches to the rod on the carbs. so when i left work i had to use a flathead screwdriver to hold the rod out while i hit the starter (it was about 40-45 degrees fahrenheit, no way it was going to start without the choke).

cut to today: took the tank off, didn't mess with the carbs at all, and screwed the choke slider back on into the right spot on the rod. i used an angled phillips-head screwdriver so i wouldn't have to take the carbs off. put everything back together, and started it up. bike runs/idles great when i don't use the choke, but as soon as i hit the choke it skips up, then drops back down, all the way to 1k rpms (usually idles at 1300). if i have the choke on and rev it, it will stay at 3k for a second or two, but then drops back down to 1k. take the choke back off, and it goes back up to 1300. it does this regardless of the petcock being set on main tank or reserve. so i took the tank off, and tried running it for a few seconds off of the gas already in the carbs. idles and chokes perfectly. put the tank back on, and it misbehaves like before. so i thought maybe i was pinching something when i put the tank on. this time i leave the tank on the frame, but disconnect the reserve and main fuel hoses. it works perfectly! so i take the tank back off, flip it upside down, and take the petcock off. clean as a whistle. put everything back together, and still have the problem. ideas? thanks in advance...

Matt

My thoughts exactly. I know he would get a lot more out of the book. Especially if he is going to be taking college level philosphy this summer. Talk about a book for philosphy study! A Clockwork Orange covers the gamit!

Matt - I'll have to check out Confederacy of Dunces (I had heard about it). It sounds like something he would like. Thanks for some ideas.

np...i would recommend getting your hands on a copy of dunces quickly, and reading it immediately. why? because they're making a movie of it! i, for one, have to read the book before i see the movie, since the book is the original, and the movie is based off of it. but that's just me. the movie itself is in pre-production right now, and is starring will ferrell, drew barrymore, and mos def. i'm skeptical of ferrell in the role, but still very hopeful. no news on when it will be released, but since it's in pre-production right now, we'll see it before '05.
