I have a Gateway 400 Select that had no been used in quite some time. So, I went to the Gateway site and had them scan my computer to find what new drivers were available. I downloaded and installed new drivers for the sound chip and also one for the display. Now the computer will not boot past the Windows 98 screen. Any ideas? (I'm ready for TD's tool )

I take it you don't have Gateway's GoBack software. Try looking for conflicts in Safe Mode.

No, I do not have any software or CDs for this computer.
In "safe mode" it tells me that it is missing a file from Symantec and that I need to reload that file. I'm assuming they mean Norton? How can I load a CD from "safe mode"???

The hard drive in this computer was the original from my eMachine 366c. (It worked fine until I tried to update drivers from the Gateway site.) Could/should I remove it from the Gateway and reinstall it into my eMachine and then do a restore disk with formatting the drive??? I'm willing to try almost anything as I called Gateway today and they do not have restoration CDs for this machine because of it's age (made 07/99). They kept me on the line for 45 minutes and I got passed around to 5 different service reps only to be told that they don't make them (restore disks) anymore for this machine.

Start system in MS-DOS mode (command prompt) or use boot disk and type "win /d:m" (without quotation marks), and then press enter button.

If that don't work you could uninstall program in safe mode and see if that helps.

Thanks again Lubner :) :) :D

It is up and running again. Everything works except sound. I've tried downloading the drivers from the Gateway site, but the computer locks up while installing them  .

Any ideas where I can find a cheap PCI sound card to install? (Ooops...found one at Tiger Direct for $14.99...Hi-Live 6 Channel PCI Pro Sound Card )

Did you try to install drivers in safe mode? I have a friend with a Performance 800 which he had to install all drivers, one at a time, in safe mode. He couldn't get them to load from CD or Windows.

I didn't even think of that.
I'll give that a try when I can get back to it.

Did it really lock up or is it just taking its own jolly good time? I installed a NIC card on some older pcs before, they hung at windows startup. After four or five times of trying I just decided to let it sit alone for a few hours. Three hours later, came back and it was installed. Never had problems with it after that.

Yep...it locked up. The mouse locked up, Ctrl/Alt/Delete did nothing, and had to unplug it to shut her down!
I have it back up and running just fine with a couple of exceptions...no sound ( I even installed a sound card, but still have no sound) and everytime I try to open Windows Media Player, the CDplayer controls, or Real One the computer locks up.

After 2+ years (not continuously, of course) of playing with this "thing", it is now a mean lean computing machine.
I bumped up the RAM to 256mb.
Installed a new 40Gb hard drive.
Installed XP Pro w/SP2 plus updates.
Installed a Sound Blaster card.

It now leaves for a "new" home tomorrow!
