I need confirmation of my diagnosis for my bosses machine.

Dell Dimension L1000R MATX pc with an unknown mobo, Intel 810e chipset, unknown cpu (He doesn't know), I think he's got 384 mb ram. System suddenly stopped giving a display so he called me for help. On testing the thing, no beeps on post, nothing. The monitor turns on, then goes into standby. The HD doesn't appear to be spinning, the CD-ROM does spin up. The CPU fan spins and a little diode lights up by the memory slots. No other signs of life.

I stripped the board down to nothing but the board and tried booting into the bios, no go. I tried resetting the CMOS, no go. I tried a pci video card (known good), no go. I think what I have here is a dead mobo in a proprietary case, with a proprietary ps.

Now, if it is dead as Caesar, what do I do? I figure the price of a new Dell mobo is going to be costlier than the rest of the components are worth. And since Dell apparently used a proprietary pin out on the ps, I have no choice but to replace the board with a Dell board or go big and suggest a new system.

Thoughts and suggestions wanted.

Step1. Jack it up and drive a new T6000 eMachines under it.
Step2. Let it down.
Step3. You're done! Tell him he has the latest and greatest and it's not proprietary (well, sort of).
Step 4. Humbly accpet you new raise/promotion.

Seriously, tell him it'll be cheaper/better/faster in the long run to replace it with a new moo-Machine. Add his old hard drive for more storage....

I take it that you concur with my diagnosis of srewedus motherboardus.

That makes two of his machines that I am in the guts of, and haven't been able to chalk up a success yet.

OK, I am on board with the plan. He'll never know the difference. Now, how do I get rid of the Emachines splash screen?

Yep, I concur.........tell him the new way to boot up these new fangled computers is to turn on the box, wait 10 seconds then turn the monitor on.......

Usually in BIOS, you can disable this feature.

It's an old gag, in the early days that was the number one question on the original Emachineupgraders forum. It was followed by "How do I ususcribble", "UNSCRIBE ME KNOW!!!!!", "Unsubscribe me now or I'll SUE!!!" and other butchered versions of cries for help.

Oh, and, unfortunately, you are stuck with the splash screen on most of the older systems. Of course, on a COMO III you can replace it with a nice Korean splash with the bios flash from e4all.info. :D

Ahhh. I was still a newbie when the gag ran the circuit...

I hadn't even accessed the BIOS on my t4130 until I switched it to a new case- The post went by so fast, I couldn't even figure out if it was the F1, del. (or maybe it was the ANY key)

See all the fun I was missin' when I wasn't upgradin'. I feel like the new guy in the neighborhood.

Good read. I had a brief, and hopefully non-recurring, similar problem. The gremlins fixed whatever they broke but the odd thing was the computer went kaput right after Steam got done updating one of the games.

It sounds like a BIOS problem to me, and since the bios is fooked, yes probably a good idea to get a new mobo. Those monitor symptoms are similar to what i recieved after I had flashed my bios and not cleared cmos with the /cc switch.

A couple of years ago I built a computer for a friend using a surplus Dell mainboard (I had a spare 370 processor laying around) . The board worked fine with all the spare parts I used salvaged from other machines . Dell does not use proprietory hardware persae . They do have the boards on more common machine built to thier specs (the ca810 I used had no onboard video though the standard Intel has it) but most after market components will work . The point is that a quick look at Pricewatch shows the 810 , 810e , and 815 chipset mainboards are still available starting at $40 .

When people ask me which computer to buy Other than a custom built I recommend Dell . I can't build the same machine for the same price (same specs) . Dell also is the only major manufacturer that ships a full OS with its machines (not restore disks) , I guess being #1 has its advantages . Plus from all reports you can't beat Dell's service .

Don't get me wrong , I like eMachines . The ones I've owned and upgraded have been great machines , but this forum would not exist if eMachines service and support didn't suck .

If your boss is happy with the computer he has , let him spend the $40 - $80 for a replacement board before recomending a new machine . Or have him buy a new machine and ask for the old one . For a few bucks you could end up with a decent backup machine you could sell or donate to someone .

Try replacing the power supply.

I'm not sure if old Dell's adhered to the ATX spec, so you should check this out before buying a new ps.

There was a period when Dell was building systems with reverse polarity mobos and PSUs....this is the concern (and didn't tell anybody!). It didn't last too long......too many fires, explosions and bad publicity.....I guess they only cared about the last one.
