I googled this a while back and it sounds like AGP is the choice video card for nothing more than either setting a standard or for marginal gains over PCI. Obviously the big dependent is what your motherboard will support. But as far as advantages of one over the other, the articles I read put the AGP over the PCI, but not by much. |

Um...AGP stands for "accelerated graphics port", and it is just that, a dedicated port for graphics cards that is 'accelerated' when compared to the PCI slots, which are not dedicated to graphics only. If you look at your mobo information you will find that it is AGP2X or AGP4X or even AGP8X if its new... If I'm not mistaken, the original AGP slots (1X) supported 2X the bandwidth of a PCI slot, AGP2X has 4X the bandwidth of a PCI slot, AGP4X has 8X the bandwidth and so on... So an AGP graphics card supports, at the very least, 2X the bandwidth that a PCI card does. The best PCI card out there will perform okay, but still no comparison to an AGP card. I recently upgraded from a GeForce FX5200 128MB PCI card, to a GeForce4 Ti4200 AGP card. I get around 2 1/2 to 3 times higher FPS in most games including higer detail settings. Some motherboards don't have an AGP slot, my old eMachine 566ir (Anaheim2A mobo) didn't. So in that case you would have no choice but to go with a PCI card. If you are going to do any gaming with a PCI card, it had better be the best one you can find. |

Wow, AGP sounds significantly better! So I'm pretty much stuck walking the poodle with my PCI!
PCI Express, due out next year, looks like it will make AGP obsolete... but not on my computer. Apparently it's backward compatible with PCI slots, but then this supposedly relegates it to PCI speeds. Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money... |

I haven't looked into the PCI Express info too much yet... not sure if it is backward compatable to old PCI slots or if it will require new mobo's with special PCI slots....from what I've heard it will be the equivalent of AGP16X to start with...too bad it takes so long for software to catch up, even now there are very few games that take advantage of even AGP8X... |

PCI-X uses a much longer 64bit socket that runs at either 66MHz, 100MHz, or 133MHz. PCI-X cards will not work in older PCI slots. you can see an example of PCI-X slots vs PCI slots on this Tyan Thunder K8W Motherboard... Thanks johnholmes888 that's what I was wondering. I knew AGP was for accelerated graphics port but I never realized a 1x AGP was 2x the bandwidth as a PCI slot. Thanks |
