Ok, here's one to start this thread for us "antique" emachine owners.

What upgrades have you done to your old emachines?

Mine was a 333i until....

400 Celeron (benchmarked @ 403)
Dual CPU cooling fans
256 mb SDRAM
Windows 2000 Pro
ATI Rage 128 16mb PCI
Cirrus Logic 56K modem
NIC (for broadband)
Creative Labs 52X CD
HP 24/4X burner
40G HD 7200 rpm
Digital Camera
Canon printer and scanner
Logitech USB wirless optical mouse & kb
Labtech speech mic
Casio PDA (also used as touchpad)
Altec Lansing ACS340 Speakers w/Subwoofer
250W Technics 5.1 Surround Sound reciever (input/output from my sound card)
Game Shark Gaming controller
MS Office 2000
Nero
WinAmp
Microsoft Agent Voice Navigation and Text-to-Speech
(had dual monitors w/ iMicro PC-to-TV converter on 27" Toshiba TV)
lots o' software, (Homeworld, Quake II, etc..)
APC Back-Up UPS

So what upgrades have you done to keep your old emachines current or better?

I took my doorstop (etower 366c) and made a computer out of it. Took the 250mhz Cyrix processor out and threw it at the nearest dog, and replaced it with an AMD K6-2+ 450mhz. Replaced the "large" HD and replaced it with a 40GB. Also have upgraded the memory to 256mb.

Well, there wasn't much to do. My 500i is about maxed out as far as the processor goes...I've bumped the 32 meg RAM up to 256 Meg, and added a Yamaha CD-RW, and added a Sound Blaster PCI 16 sound card. I run Windows 98SE, for my money the best Windows version. This is the best running computer I own; it has never let me down.

I also own a T4130 running Windows XP. It has a full gig of RD RAM, and I added a Sound Blaster PCI 512 sound card. I have my iTunes on this one (If you haven't checked out iTunes, do it now...there's nothing better for Mac or Windows).

I use a 733i at work. Everybody else has Compaqs and HP's, and I get quit a bit of ribbing about my eMachine. The boss keeps bugging me to swap it out for a new Compaq, but I won't. They always have problems, but I never do. I guess it helps that I know how to keep a computer running well and everybody else doesn't.

Lets see....

Started with an eMachines 566ir2 with 64MB, 15GB harddrive, integrated video and sound.

-increased memory to 320MB
-added GeForce2 MX400 64MB PCI video card, then upgraded that to GeForce FX5200 128MB PCI card
-added a WD 40GB hard drive
-upgraded CDRW to LG 48X24X48
-19" flat CRT (NEC Multisync 97F)
-modified cpu to run at 100MHz FSB to get 850MHz out of it.
-added microsoft optical mouse
-added NIC card for cable internet
-installed Win XP Pro

I must be one of the lucky ones, because this was all done with the standard 120W PSU.

I have since raped that machine of its best components to build a new one for myself, and I have handed it down to my daughter, still going strong.

I have 2 Emachines a 633ID & Emonster 600.

The 633ID is running a 1.1ghz (Celeron) with 512MB ram for my kids. Still using Window ME and they use the heck out of it for games and AOL.

The Emonster 600 is running the PIII Slot 1 1ghz with 512MB ram. Windows 98
I've been debating on trying the Powerleap PL-iP3/T 1.4ghz celeron but I've never done a bios upgrade and will have to look into it a little more before I try it.

Well I have a 333id which was my first real PC. When it's PS died I was finally pushed over the edge and built an AMD based system.

I had added a 30 GB HD, 7200rpm ATA 133 drive before it died. Advice to the holders of old machines: Max your memory, add a 7200 rpm HD (The improvement over the stock 5200 will amaze you), keep your PC clean - don't run anything you don't absolutely need in the background, keep your .tmp files to a minimum. Overclocking is cool, just remember, OC = HEAT. Cool that sucker good.

One of these days I'm gonna put a new PS in the old 333 and see just how far I can go.

Hi,

I have a eMachines 730 (UK)

Currently I have added a Second (120Gb)Hard-drive,
Re-partitioned the first drive into 3 Virtual drives
Added 512Mb Ram
Replaced GeForce 2 with FX5200 (Although wished I saved a bit more for a FX5600)
Added a NIC for broadband

Its a bit old now and I want a faster PC so future upgrades are considered such as:

New Motherboard
New Processor
New RAM (To supoprt Motherboard)
New GFX card (Hopefully FX 5600 or above)

But all this costs money :(, so I guess I better start saving.

Cheers,

Pabs

2) Overclocking with CPUFSB software gives crazy mad speeds!!! My PC can't handle all the different FSB's offered. Downside: when you reboot you have to reset options.
Overclocking with BIOS option is small (3 x CPU multiplier, or 3x14= an extra 42mhz for 1.4 CPU), but has been very stable.

Congrats on the new site all!!! :D

The PSU is just enough to handle all the upgrades on this computer stabily. Every once in a while if a CD or DVD is left in the drive at boot up, the drive spin up will draw too much watts and the computer will crash with the blue screen of death. I've played Return to Castle Wolfenstein online with this setup with consistent success. I hope that this setup will last me until 64-bit computers become the standard and more affordable.

I tried and removed a number of modem cards before I started broadband ISP service. One was a full duplex speakermodem to use the computer as a fax/phone/answering machine...it wasn't as practical as I thought it might be...lol.

I also tried 2 other CD-R/W drives. One was a Hi-Val (cheap piece of crap that stopped working very well) with a wopping 2/4x R/W speed. The other was a Lite-on 12/10x that was very reliable. The Lite-on is being used in another computer now.

There were no officially released 600 mhz AMD socket 7 cpus....but some of these will do 600mhz:
http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_comp_amdk63plus.html
Depends on the chip(Mine does) but you should get at least 550mhz with 256 of on-die L2 cache.
Make sure you get PC100 or low density PC133 modules if you purchase 256mb sticks of Dram.

Thanks for the heads up, I was looking through eBay and I was wondering why I couldn't find and AMD K6-3+ 600MHz. I did find several 550MHz models though.
As for the SDRAM, I'm just going to buy used PC100MHz. I don't want to take a risk with newer PC133MHz SDRAM.
