[This plot continues from "Inside the Airport".]

Elliot had had an old friend who lived in this part of town and, even though Lisa wouldn't know Larkin, it should prove a safe place to stay the night while where they wouldn't be attacked by shadow wolves in the middle of the night. Hopefully.

The going had been slow from the airport—slower than Elliot liked this time of year—and the sun was now low. He had to get back to Thomas the next day. After all, he had said he would be back before nightfall. That was impossible now, but hopefully Thomas wouldn't mind.

"Lisa is very nice and she should be able to put us up for the night, assuming she's still alive. She will be able to if she is, because she will have no say in the matter. Anyway, her house is that one over there." He would have normally pointed at this point, but the strain from carrying half of a Larkin was taking a toll on the man's practically nonexistent muscles.

At the doorstep, he almost let Larkin go, but decided that would be bad because it would ruin the experiment and might damage Larkin. Not that the second thing mattered much; Larkin was a dead man anyway.

It was unfortunate that he was so close to death, but it would provide good notes on the process of what happens once a shadow wolf's claws got into you. That could be useful in figuring them out and thus containing one. If his brother's plan—return power to the local power plant and build an ion field to trap a shadow creature—worked, there could be progress made in returning to what society had been prior to 2012.

"Well, we're here now and we will find out if Lisa is alive or dead. Are you excited? I am. I honestly don't know what to except here!" He knocked on the door and waited for a response.

Larkin looked at the door. It was an odd shade of purple. He felt light headed, though, so he wasn't sure that was actually the color. He was here for some reason. A voice spoke to him; a voice he had known for a year so far: "You fool. You shouldn't be here." It was taunting; daunting. He gave voice to the voice and said it out loud, not realizing he had.

"Elliot, what's happening to us? I mean to me?"

Elliot was excited by the question. It gave him the ability to learn. He reached into his pocket with his free arm to pull out the memo pad he kept there. It would have been better to write it in his journal, but he would be able to transfer it over later tonight. He pulled out the black Ticonderoga he kept behind his ear. "Larlkin! Why? What's happening? Describe the symptoms!"

Thomas would be happy to look over these notes and Elliot was certainly happy to take them. The shadow wolves had been on Earth for a year or so now and still he and his brother knew hardly anything about them; other than the fact, of course, that they acted like vapor when put into tight situations.

But now, Larkin would be "Subject 0" for this experiment. Well, not really an experiment, more of a series of observations about their new reality. This would be the first time since Darwin, really, that there would be a new species heavily studied! Elliot and Thomas would likely go down in history, if any was ever made again. Not that that was important to him, of course.

He prepared his memo pad for Larkin's explanation of the symptoms.

Larkin didn't know where to begin. "I have been nauseous and feeble ever since the attack. Is that a jellyfish?" He pointed to something that he truly believed to be a jellyfish but was actually a window.

"Who are you?" It took him about a second of thinking about this question before he let out a scream that was louder than he knew he could manage.

"Also, it hurts..."

Elliot took careful notes of the situation before the scream. He would have continued taking notes, had he not jumped and let go of the memo pad and pencil that had been clutched in his hands. They fell to the ground, as Newton said they would, followed shortly by Larkin.

"Oh, blimey! I'm so sorry, Larkin! Hello, by the way, I am Elliot! I am your doctor and this situation is not good! We need to get you inside and into a bed where you can rest your head on a pillow. Hopefully the beds in here are still in-tact. Amazing how some people stick to their houses, even if the beds are destroyed. A lot of sentimental value, houses have. Never doubt that, Larkin! Where is Lisa? We should probably just go in, you and I, I don't even know if she's still alive!"

He knocked once more on the door, bending to pick up his dropped items as well as Larkin. He brought himself up to standing level with the peep hole of the door. Hopefully Lisa would arrive at the other side of the door and open it. Hopefully, but not probably. If she didn't open the door, Elliot would be fine with just barging in, but knocking was polite and still should happen.

Lisa Harmony Smith held at her side as she gauged the door from a far. She had been scrounging up a meal for herself, humming as she sorted through her provisions. Which consisted of, and had consisted of for several weeks, power bars and jerky and oat meal. She had been considering that can of tuna that sat on the shelf in the pantry. But she heard a knock. It broke through the silence of the house and caused Lisa to jump with fright.

Her hand darted to a gun at her hip and she sat tensed listening for sounds. She heard a muffed converstation, or at least one side of one. The side she did hear was an excited voice. Or a loud one at least. What was she to make of this? Knocking? at the end of teh world? She never considered that people would actually still be interested in being polite.

She was torn for a second, between checking on who it could possibly be or just hiding from whomever it was. It was eventually decided as a second knocked followed the first. She sighed and lowered the gun. She kept it in hand as she went to check the peep hole in the door.

A man stood there looking as awkward as can be, a man who looked strangely dead and alive over his shoulder. Intelligent hazel eyes peered back at her through the peep hole. If it were anyone else Lisa wouldn't hesitant to shoot them. What with the dead body and everything.

But Lisa did in fact know of this strange individual but his face matched two names she knew.

"Is that Elliot or Thommy?" She called through the door a smile spreading across her lips.

Elliot was excited to see the door open of it's own volition. "Lisa! You are still alive! It's me, Elliot! By, God, you're still alive, and look at you! Oh, please excuse my friend here." He jerked his head towards Larkin. "He had a run-in with a shadow wolf and is a bit worse for wear right now. I'd hug you, but I need to support Larkin and you know I've never been one for hugging anyway, so I probably wouldn't hug you."

He paused for a moment, mind a bit blank from exhaustion. And then, just as suddenly as he had stopped speaking, he began again. "You wouldn't just happen to have a spare bed for Larkin here, would you? Oh, blimey! I forgot names! Larkin, this is Lisa. Lisa; Larkin! Well, can we come in before it gets any later?"

He pushed past Lisa at that precise moment, and finally started to feel Larkin's weight on his shoulders. "Larkin, do you think you can stand on your own now?" He looked at Larkin, but Larkin's eyes were closed. "Blimey, how long have you been out? Oh well, that doesn't really matter."

He looked around the living room for a moment. Just as he remembered it, not that he had been here much before anyway, but his memory was almost perfect. He still forgot words sometimes and called Ethernet cables "wibbly-wibblies". Not that there was much need for calling Ethernet cables much of anything these days, what with the Internet good and gone.

"Sorry if he gets blood on anything, I have a spare sheet in my backpack for collecting scrap metal and other stuff for Thomas and myself. It should be able to buffer his back and your sheets. I mean," He lowered his voice, as if it made a difference to Larkin's hearing. "He is technically dying already. I just brought him with me to take notes on the process and to keep him away from his own vomit."

He paused again, looking around. "There's no way he'll make it through the week. I doubt even if he'll still be alive tomorrow, but that's just my hypothesis. I've never seen anything this severe. Nausea, pain, hallucinations... I'll spare you the list."

He paused again to look at Lisa; to really take her in. She was almost as he remembered her, but there was a darker aurora about her than he remembered, but that must just be from the setting, nothing genetic.

Lisa was a little startled at first at the sudden noise that her friend Elliot produced. She hadn't had a real conversation in.. well she didn't quite know. She caught up to him after he finished with his brief and through explanation of hugging.

"Um.. You can put him in my um.. old roommates bed, its not anybody's room after all." She toss her gun onto the couch as they passed it and took support of the man's other arm as they were introduced, and was about to greet him when Elliot mentioned him being passed out, Lisa was about to ask Elliot about his health but was cut off by Elliot as he launched into another breathless rant. She grimaced at his causal mentioning of his friend's condition.

"He's dying?" She asked quietly a little saddened, but otherwise unaffected, he went on explaining how long he had left. When he stopped talking she looked away trying to keep her new found hardness away from him. She wasn't affected by death anymore, But she had an excuse to be distracted, as he finished his tirade they arrived in the room which Lisa had mentioned, She guided him to the bed and helped set the man Larkin upon it.

Lisa then turned and hugged Elliot, despite what he had said earlier. "Its good to see you Elliot, it really is." She didn't hold on for too long before releasing him and stepping back, "Have you seen any of the others at all?" She asked hopefully.

Elliot quietly and awkwardly accepted the hug, even wrapping his own arms around his old friend. Elliot actually couldn't remember the last time he had hugged anyone. The hug ended, and he gestured Lisa to the door of the room which he soon exited himself.

"It is honestly good to see you too, Lisa. I don't know why I haven't come calling earlier. Well, busy surviving, I suppose. You might have been dead. I wonder how many of our friends are still alive and hiding in their houses. Maybe we should organize a party to search the houses, just in case. No, better save that for later. Stuff to do, Lisa! We're repowering the city!"

He paused briefly and shut the door and digesting her question. "There are some of us alive, yes. I've seen six, I think. There's you, Larkin, Drake, my brother, Gabe, and Scott! Larkin's dying, so you don't really need to know anything about him, Drake hit me on the head yesterday on an airplane, and I was concussed, but I think I'm better now. You know my brother, of course, as well as anyone can. Gabe I didn't really get to know until he ran off with Larkin to find some blueprints. Hey, how did Larkin get to the airport in that time? Oh well. If he becomes lucid again, we can ask him.

"Scott was a bit awkward around Thomas and me, but that's to be expected. You meet a new person in this life and they immediately go off on lectures about trapping a shadow wolf—I'm sure you've seen those ghastly creatures. We're using an ion field, of course. My brother thought of that, but didn't think through the power issue. We can't just use the generator we have at our house, no, not enough power and too many fluctuations to be trusted to keep an ion field stabilized. So, I remembered notes I took in an old journal that was at home, so I ran there to get them.

"The power plant will be restored soon, and we will capture a shadow wolf for science. We also plan on restoring communications between the cities. The power plant will be good for that. Need to get up to some main city—New York, perhaps, or LA—and get power to them."

Elliot sat on the conveniently placed couch, for they had returned to the living room by now. He looked up at Lisa, for the first time really taking her in. "Anyway, what have you been up to, Harm?" He used the old nickname that he remembered of her, not quite sure how she would react.

Lisa sighed with relief as she learned of her fortunate friends. She was more relieved that more than she expected survived, as far as general amount of people. She had previously thought there were fewer. Not because of the end of the world itself but because of things she assumed had happened, She herself wasn't above killing to keep herself alive, she doubted anyone else still alive in this new harsh world were.

She listend as best she could as Elliot slipped into a more science-y diction. It was good to see him so little changed, from what she coudl remember, it was heartwarming, She smiled as he excitedly explained trying to develop ways of trapping shadow wolves.

The wolves bothered her, but a few bullets went a long way against such things. But if someone like Elliot was on the case she knew that it was important enough to be focused on.

And power was returning which cheered her greatly. New York stuck in her head, New York.

"Uh, you know, surviving." She said sitting beside him, "I haven't been as... active as you. I've stayed here, protected." She smiled weakly, "It's been a long time since I've had company, last I saw a human face it wasn't friendly. But the library is always open now," She laughed at her own attempt at humor, "But I've been surviving." She nodded resolutely, staring at floor between her feet floor. There wasn't another word, "Oh! I was making a meal are you hungry at all?" She stood and looked back at him.

Elliot stared forward blankly for a moment before responding with: "Hungry? I'm starved! I haven't had a good meal since lunch yesterday! Haven't had a meal at all since then, actually. See Thom and I met Scott and he was intent on restoring communications between cities and I had to run around. I was supposed to be back there this morning. Well, last night, really. But anyway, I met Larkin and he needed help and I needed notes. These shadow wolves kill from there attacks sometimes and I can't explain that yet. Anyway, I spent all day coming here from the airport with Larkin over my shoulder.

"Yes, Lisa, I am hungry." He opened his notebook and wrote a few more things down, trying to figure out a cure. He swiftly put it away again when he realized he had no ideas. "You met anyone friendly besides me and Larkin yet? Well, I guess you haven't actually met Larkin yet. Probably never will. Anyway, have you?"

He began to postulate about what would be for dinner in a house that had no power. Such conjecture, however, would prove futile. He leaned back in the seat stoking his hand through his hair with exhaustion. "Also, sorry if I am more distant than usual today. I'm just a bit tired and probably still slightly concussed. It should heal soon, though, no need to worry. As long as you don't make me run or anything, that is."

"Has there been any luck? With the communications I mean? And do you have to leave soon?" She asked as she turned back to the food, she was trying to only sound curious but a small amount of desperation and sadness slipped out, she had no desire to be left alone after so long, but she cleared her throat, embarrassed by the sudden outburst of emotion and instead turned to another topic entirely. "Um, I just have a few different favors of power bars and jerky, there's chocolate peanut butter and uh, actually stay away from the vanilla, I don't think this last batch was any good." She offered up a plate with a few cleanly wrapped power bars.

"Er, um.. I found one group, a family, they needed a safe place and well, they had kids, so i let them stay and gave them what I could. I don't think they got very far, it was towards the beginning... of well you know." She frowned slightly gesturing towards the door and the outside world, and distractedly took a bite of a power bar, frowning further at the taste, chocolate, So many months of the same stuff.

"You can stay here as long as you need," She said hopefully after swallowing the unfortunately flavored power bar bite, she wasn't above manners. She didn't mean to sound desperate or overly hopefully but in truth she was, surviving was great and all, but she would go mad if she didn't have someone to talk to.

Elliot frowned and took a power bar. He wasn't frowning at the power bar, no. That would be silly. He was frowning because he thought that he had been perfectly clear when he probably hadn't been. This had been common in the world before 2012, but less common now. Truth be told, he had spent most of his time this past year with only his brother, and that made a huge difference.

So, he spoke slowly and deliberately. "He, Scott, only told Thomas and myself of this plan yesterday, and these things take weeks to restore, generally. We also need to get power to it, so the power must be first." He sped up again. "I need to get back to my brother tomorrow because, well, he will have been expecting me last night and if he has noticed the time, he will be worried. As much as he can be, anyways."

Elliot took a power bar and methodically unwrapped it. It had been years since he had had one of these. He took a bite and then spoke through a muffled mouth. "You're welcome to come with me." He swallowed, remembering his manners. "We need as many hands as we can get to get the city running again, and now we're down one Larkin."

He finished the rest of the power bar, strangely mute, and then eyed a second. "Thomas and I have power at our house. Just a generator that we hooked up to a nearby gas pump with a simple siphon. It's probably going to run dry soon, honestly. We set it up half a year ago and have run it for the equivalent of a month by now. We've been living like kings! Well, eating like them, anyway. If eating hot beans and steak is what kings do. Are there any kings still alive? Sorry, not important. What is important? Do you want to come with me tomorrow morning?"

Lisa nodded slowly, "I would, greatly," She said looking at him, it was strange to be apart of something anything after so long, she smiled, "I'd be honored to help with it. But what do we do with Larkin? Hes Badly hurt and I don't think he'll survive much travel, and while, unfortunately he might not be far from dying, you still need your observations right?"

"And I need to pack whatever I can, I didn't spend the last year hording food for nothing." She frowned as she bit into the chocolate power bar, she tried and failed to ignored the possibility of getting real food. Real Meat. The thought was mouth watering, she swallowed the unsavory mouth full. Excitement was slowly building in her she remembered a possession she had, "I have a car to move him, I don't know how bad the roads are, But it would make moving a partial dead guy anywhere more of an easy feat, right?' She talked excitedly, a smile breaking across her face once more.

A twinge of guilt sparked inside of her at the causal mention of the possibility of another human dying, she tried to shrug it off and was mostly successful. She looked to Elliot, uncertain if her plan had any footing. She didn't doubt a car could provide some use to them as a whole.

Elliot jerked his head up to stare eye-to-eye with Lisa. "Lisa, that's brilliant! The roads are a bit of a mess, sure, but if your car still has gas and the parts aren't broken, we should use it. Is is four wheel drive? All wheel drive? What did they call it back then?"

He kept himself from his carnal desire for more food. "I do still need observations of Larkin, yes, but we should leave in the morning all the same. Hopefully either the car works or the observations are done." He looked away from her at that last word. That would mean that Larkin would be dead and he didn't know how Lisa would feel about Elliot's desire for Larkin to die.

He looked back at her, trying for sympathetic. "Look, there's no way he can be saved at this point anyway, so we might as well make the most of what we can of him... for science, of course."

He glanced back at the power bar, hunger surging through him. "Do you think it would be fine if I had a second one?"

The word done had a crush finality, Lisa truly considered the man laying on the bed as a person, she frowned she did not know this man, nor would she ever, she knew he was human and felt guilty for not feeling worse about his predicament, he had his life, and she felt sorry that he would be dying soon, but just sorry. She sighed before she looked back up at Elliot.

"I understand, people die in the old world, they die in this world." She looked in the general direction of Larkin, "Some people just... die for a reason." She shrugged, in her mind she was about this man Larkin, "About the car, Ive checked it quite a few times, Its in working order and I think it has at least a half a tank. It doesnt have four wheel drive, so sorry bout that." She smiled though, glad at his excitement at her mention of the car.

Her smile persisted as he asked if he could have another, "You can have more only if I get some sort of real food when we hook up with the others." She slid another power bar to him, "Deal?"

Elliot took the bar and opened it a little less methodically. "Deal." He quickly scarfed it down and considered a third one, but decided against it. "Well, I think that bed would be good. We will need some sort of rest for our travels tomorrow. I can sleep on the couch, of course, and you your bed. Unless you have a spare bed that Larkin isn't on. For my sleeping arrangements, that is."

He truly was tired and rightfully so. "Thanks for putting us up for the night. By the way, I really am glad that you're still alive."

Lisa nodded smiling, she was excited. Elliot was giving her a logical reason to leave her home, leave the one place she had not dared stray far from for what seemed like a year though she could be wrong. She felt a bit of pent up energy as she stood. She gathered up some blankets and pillows for him from the hall closet, "The couch folds out to be a bed." She said smiling, remembering briefly the many weird all night parties and marathons that occurred in that room. She couldn't remember if Elliot ever attended on of the all nighters. But she frowned as she thought of many of the people she knew were gone now.

"I'm going to pack as much food as I can." She said, "I'll try to stay quiet, but I think it would be better to be ready in the morning first thing. I'd rather travel by day." she shivered at the thought of what could await them at night, at least you could see those damn shadow things in the daylight.

"Yes. Daylight travel is the best way to travel these days. It's fine if you make some noise, though, because I'm going to check on Larkin first. Just to see if there have been any... changes in his... condition." He chose the last words carefully and then thought about them for a second after he said them. Then, he jumped up and walked to Larkin's room. He pulled his notepad out and the pencil from his left ear. Thomas still had his pencil from his right year. He opened the door and entered.

Larkin was just lying there. He wrote that down. His eyes were open. He wrote that down. Elliot took his pencil and poked at Larkin. No movement. Paralysis. He wrote that down.

Elliot waved his hand in front of Larkin's eyes. No movement. He wrote that down. He pulled a flashlight key chain that had been given out as a promotional item from the work he had once or twice devoted his entire life. He clicked it on with the button on the back. It was week, but would work. He aimed it into one of Larkin's eyes. It dilated. He wrote that down.

He stood there for a moment, staring at Larkin. He turned to go. He reached the door-frame before turning back. "I'm sorry, Larkin. There isn't much I can do. Nothing I do would help you at this point. God, I don't even know if you can hear me, but you were a good man. None of us make it in the end, I suppose."

He turned to leave—for the first time with a slowness that begged lethargy. He exited, reaching for the light switch which he then realized that had never been turned on. Then he realized that the power was out everywhere except his house.

Silently and slowly—heart heavy for the first time about Larkin's condition—he returned to the couch and sat on it again. Then he realized that reflection on the inevitable was futile. He stood up and, pushing Larkin from his mind, unfolded the couch.

He made the bed, thinking about the only party he had been to here. He had stayed home or at work most of the time, work consuming his life more than what was probably healthy. He had come on a whim because he needed to get away from Thomas for the night. That was one of the nights when he was particularly distraught about Emily.

Elliot had been the only one sober enough to change the couch into a bed, and had regretted doing so almost instantly. As he lay down, two drunks—he couldn't see who they were in the lack of light, but he could tell they were a couple—had lain in the bed next to him, and you can imagine what drunk couples like to do.

Now, however, he didn't expect that to happen next to him again. He made the bed—nice and tidy, but without the toe section of the sheet tucked in. That was far too constricting. He had always felt that way and these days there was no exception. Besides, if a shadow wolf found its way at some point in the night, he could fight it off more easily. Same reason people used to sleep with their feet towards the door, right? To fight marauders?

He finished making the bed and running his hands along the creases to make it look perfect. He didn't climb in yet, though. Instead, he went to find Lisa again.

He found her in the kitchen packing food into a backpack he had never seen before. None of that was surprising. She obviously wanted to keep the food she had found and Elliot had never spent much time looking at Lisa's backpacks. "Goodnight. See you tomorrow."

[Normally, I wouldn't post what Larkin was doing in this post, but I wanted to save us all from a collection of one-liner posts, and Larkin is my character and I give permission to myself to control him. Also, sorry for the extra-lengthy post. I just found a lot to write about.]

Lisa smiled and nodded, "Good night, and Thank you, for coming to find me." Lisa felt like she needed to thank him for giving her something to look forward to, but saying thank you for giving me hope, sounded melodramatic. Not that was she had said was any less lame sounding, but again, she reminded herself, he needed some sort of thank you. He could have not shown up and left her to her daily routine.

She had opinions now. Something to look forward to. She continued her packing until the bag she had dragged out was filled with equal amount of canned foods and power bars. She had lost count of the many days it took to amass such a fortune of food, days of raiding trips to every supermarket and warehouse store in the area, as much as she could carry back, normally on foot.

She had, in looking back, spent her time well, focusing on staying safe and hidden. She had ten encounters with shadow wolves, but only during the day, they were terrifying things, but she gritted her teeth and either fought the monsters or ran. She never did take on a challenge she didn't think she could take.

But she had had enough of this life and looked forward to do something, and being with people, and eating real food. She finally retired to her room late in the night with thought of her brighter future in a dark world.

Elliot nodded at her and returned to the couch bed. He wondered if he would put it away in the morning or just leave it, but he didn't want to decide such a gargantuan thing right now, so he lay down to go to sleep.

Thoughts of Emily filled his mind. Thoughts of that night that he had slept with her. They shifted to Thomas berating him about one thing or another and then to dejected Thomas locked in his room for the year after the might-have-been wedding. The thoughts shifted to Drake and then to Scott and Larkin. Then Gabriel. Then Emily. Then Lisa. All in all, he had met quite a number of people in this dead world.

Sleep finally found him on the thoughts of Lisa and returning power to the city. Things were going to happen soon and that was a beautiful thought to fall asleep on. Things were going to be better soon.

Larkin lay there. There wasn't anything he could do. The voice had been berating him ever since they entered the house; telling him he wouldn't make it. He didn't believe it, though. He thought that its perception was just sick. That is, he didn't believe it until Elliot left the room.

Darkness began to fill his vision. The light was fading. He was going to be a catfish farmer soon, just like his father, right? He was done driving buses. He would eventually pull through, right?

Darkness fell all over his vision. He lay there motionless. Then there was light. There was a tunnel. There was a gate. He walked to the gate and saw his parents waiting on the other side.

"Are you ready?" He nodded. He was ready.

There was a woman in white, and upon closer inspection, he realized it was the woman in white. The one who had given him the voice. He walked to the gate that she opened and looked at her. "What did it mean? 'Protection and Salvation'? Was it really something, or was it just a fairy-story? Was it real or was it schizophrenia?"

She smiled back to him, but said nothing. His mother did speak, though. "Larkin, darling. Please just come." And so he walked through the gate.

[So he is dead now. That's it for Larkin.]

By the earlier morning rays Lisa was up, she rose quickly as excitement over too her. She packed any personal items she thought she would need she shoved everything she had planned to take in a duffel bag. It was basic clothing and pictures mainly. When she exited her room she realized that Elliot was still asleep.

She couldn't tell how early it was, but he needed his rest so she left him have it, she didn't check on Larkin and instead she laid out some power bars for him before taking her keys and heading outside to pack everything in her car. The morning was chilly but the sun was out and the sky was clear. It was a warming sight to see blue skies.

She packed things away and generally made sur ethe car was still in decent shape. When she was satisfied that it was ready for whatever lay in store she headed back into her house. She grabbed a small bag from her room to pack any weapons she might need, which consisted of her hand gun and a durable knife.

With that done she went back out to the car to stash it on the floor floor of the back seat. When she returned to the house she began to eat a break fast of a power bar and to wait for her companions to arise.

Elliot awoke to the sound of a car door slamming. Was Lisa leaving without him? No, that made no sense. He lay there motionless until she came back inside and he heard the crinkling of a power bar wrapper. He sat up in the bed and rubbed his hair out of his face. He needed a haircut. Unfortunately, that was not very likely to happen these days, and it wasn't even really a necessity.

He leaned against the coach backrest for a minute, the pattern of the sunlight playing across his face. He squinted tightly. He would need to explain everything to Thomas today. Hopefully he would be happy to see Lisa again. He probably would be. He wouldn't be too sad to hear about Larkin, though.

The thought of Larkin made Elliot jump out of bed and dash to his room. Well, he would have, except that he banged his knee on the coffee table that held his notepad and pencil. It was probably loud enough to wake everyone in the house except the dead.

He grabbed his items and hobbled to check Larkin, ready to write the second day of notes. He entered the room and saw that Larkin's eyes were closed. Was he asleep, or just pretending? Was he dead?

Elliot grabbed Larkin's wrist and, not feeling a pulse, darted his hand up to hold beneath Larkin's nose. No air. Larkin was dead. Had it happened last night, or this morning? He long had he been dead? An autopsy would need to happen.

He exited the room and entered the kitchen where Lisa sat eating her power bar. A second one lay out, and a third. Presumably for himself and Larkin. He grabbed his and sat down in silence. He unwrapped it and took a bite.

Then, remembering Lisa, he spoke with a grave solemnness that was both uncommon and unbecoming of him. "Morning. Larkin, unfortunately, won't be needing that." He pushed Larkin's power bar back towards Lisa.

Lisa paused mid morning of her greeting to Elliot. She set down what was left of her power bar and swallowed, "Oh." She thought it over and shivered she knew another person dead, she shivered because she didn't feel like she truly cared.

"I assume you want to take him with us then?" she asked with a grimace, not looking forward to a dead body in her car.

Elliot looked at the power bar and pretended to examine it very closely while not really taking in anything out of the ordinary. He did this to avoid eye contact with Lisa. It would be hard enough to convince her, he assumed, that the body needed to be examined.

"Yes. It's really the only way to prevent more people from dying from this in the future, and if we're going to be capturing some, we should have some base of knowledge before we start to study them, and being able to fight the damage that they do will be important."

He kept looking at his power bar, even as he took a bite, which proved difficult and probably made him look stupid because of how close it was to his face anyway. He felt he had to repeat his initial point. "It's the only way."

Lisa sighed, finished her power bar and stretched, "Fine, look, I'm not going to argue, just know that I think who ever he was deserves more respect than what I'm hearing. Even if you didn't like him. How much did he weight?" She rattled off moving to pull sheets out, she wasn't about to get dead people stuff all over her car. She really wanted to fight Elliot on this, but she knew that he was right deep down. And it would save lives at some point, down the line.

She wasn't mad at Elliot or anything, she was just frustrated that human life wasn't more respected. She knew she blamed herself more than anyone,
"I think it would be easier to move him while he's wrapped up in sheets." She mumbled as she movedpast Elliot and towards Larkin's room.

Elliot was generally surprised that he wasn't going to need to defend his position any more than he already had. Lisa had changed in this year. In a way, so did he. He scarfed down the last of his power bar before jerking upright and following Lisa towards Larkin.

"Hmm? Oh, he didn't weigh too much. A lot after a while, but that's different. That's because I don't have muscles. Not strong ones, anyway. Everyone has muscles." He walked to the far side of the bed and helped Lisa move Larkin to the car and into the backseat, moving the bag that was sitting there to the floor.

"He did say he wanted his body donated to science, if that helps any."

Lisa shrugged not offering her opinion on the donation to science,"Anyway, how far away is everyone?" she asked as she went to her door to shut and lock it. In case of disaster, she told herself, she would have a safe haven.

A knot formed in her stomach as she looked back at Elliot, she was sure it was the right thing to do, but she regretted leaving behind he only home. It was a feeling that had kept her here, she had had plenty of opportunities to leave, she had a car and food and ways to rpotect herself, but she never did leave. Of course she was glad she hadn't.

"Off we go?" she asked him as she slid easily into the drivers seat.

Elliot nodded and responded to both questions: "We're over by the CNN tower. Whoever's there will see a moving car as if someone smart was able to fix it up and they will suspect that it was me. If no one is there, then you remember where I live, right? The body will need to be taken there for either Thomas or myself to examine. Anyway, off we go."

He got into the passenger seat and buckled up out of good habit. "Don't want to die in a car crash now." He smiled to Lisa, hoping to lighten the mood but then realized what he had implied. "Not that I think you'll crash. Just can't be too careful."

Lisa made a face at him before turning the key. The Car's engine roared to life. Lisa placed her hands firmly on the wheel. It's like riding a bike. She thought as she steppe don the gas, the car moved forward and down the drive way she stopped out of habit and looked both ways before pulling out onto the road. She flushed at the silly gesture. The roads were strewn with random things, abandoned cars being the majority of it, so she took it slow, but fast enough to make it be wroth taking the car.

Soon, Lisa was able to get acquainted with her car remembering how to drive as it were. The avoiding of immoblie cars was something she picked up quickly as well. The city streets were theirs and theirs alone.

And Lisa felt excitement with the movement her life was making.
