January 15th, 2013 I remember hearing a song before the end of the world. The song seems to be influencing my every move, and my every progression of thought. The band VNV Nation, well-known for their electronic music, created a song called "Further," which constantly relays throughout the maze of my brain. It was as if they had me, and possible others within my position, in mind. The lyrics are as follows: At the end of days, at the end of time When the Sun burns out will any of this matter? Who will be there to remember who we were? Who will be there to know that any of this had meaning for us? And in retrospect I'll say we've done no wrong Who are we to judge what's right and what has purpose for us? With designs upon ourselves to do no wrong Running wild unaware of what might come of us The Sun was born, so it shall die So only shadows comfort me I know in darkness I will find you giving up inside like me Each day shall end as it begins And though you're far away from me I know in darkness I will find you giving up inside like me Without a thought I will see everything eternal Forget that once we were just dust from heavens far As we were forged we shall return, perhaps some day I will remember you and wonder who we were The Sun was born, so it shall die So only shadows comfort me I know in darkness I will find you giving up inside like me Each day shall end as it begins And though you're far away from me I know in darkness I will find you giving up inside like me ------------- The chorus had an especially strong effect on me, causing me to think of Lilly, the woman I still continue to search the earth for, or at least New York. Even though the world appears darker than it had been before the end, I will still find her. I will still find her through all the obstacles that block my path. And...perhaps she feels the same way. Perhaps everyone who is still alive at this point faces such thoughts and emotions I face now. The end will come, and has come, but the survivors will reunite and our world will, thus, be born again. I'll find you, you'll find me, and we'll all find each other to start the world anew. - Jasper Hartnett |
