Ok How many times have you gotton an anime DVD to find out that it hardly follows the book at all and is watered down so it can be viewed by everyone? I asked myself this question at the Animeboston Con 2007, and I got an answer...

Q: Why does The USA "Water Down" Anime?

A: People in the USA Think that anime doesnt appeal to everyone and so to make it for not just the teen population, The USA Directors ect.. of the DVD's they relese take out the offensive parts to make anime appeal more to kids.

Here are some examples:

Chobits:

Manga: The Manga is rated 16+ for language, Some Nudity, and other 16+ related stuff.

US DVD - The Chobits DVD has a diffrent ending than the book ending, and elimates almost 100% of the nudity and 100% of the bad language. All the charactors are pretty much the same tho, and parts of the DVD are diffrent from the book. yet despite all this the USA Age Grade is still 16+ for chobits.

Love Hina:

Manga: The Manga is rated 16+ for Nudity (Alot) Sexuial Suggested Themes, and Some Language (Yes the people who say Akamatsu is a perv are prob right lol) If you can get past the perverted scenes however, Love Hina is a very funny anime.

US DVD - The Love Hina DVD's are almost completelly Stripped of any offense stuff, All the DVD's (But 1) Are rated 13+ and are funny and friendly to most ppl and new minor charactors get added that arent in the books at all.

Moon Phase:

Manga: The manga Starts out as Ages 13+ With a non nudity Bath scene here or there (Why is it always girls in the bath scenes anyways? lol) and goes onto being Rated 16+ From book 5 onwards. Its prob rated 16+ for some violence and one suggestive theme.

US DVD: The DVD's are all rated TV:PG, Its not that bad actully and the Moon Phase DVD's Pretty much follows the book almost 100% (A rare case) Its both a cute, and funny anime.

Ranma One Half:

Manga: The Ranma Manga Series are all rated 16+ For Nudity (Both Sexes), Some Violence, and suggestive themes. The Ranma series is a good anime series tho, and as funny as heck to boot.

US DVD: The US Relese of The Ranma Series Adds new Charactors but to my suprise does NOT cut out the nudity at all. Some new side stores are added to pep up the anime a lil while its in the middle, but the biggest shock is when I tell you that the DVD's are Rated 13+ (Not a norm 16+).

^Those are all the Anime's I can think of for now, I will add more later.

I did catch that part:

In the 1st seasonAkanie is thinking of how ranma defended her by saying "Akanie is MY fiancee, touch her, and I will kill you!" When in reality ranma doesnt say that line untul the first episode of the 2nd season.

There are huge standards differences in what is acceptable in Japanese and American culture.

Child Nudity, Snuff Films, Ultra Gore, and wierd sex are acceptable parts of Japanese Culture and not American.

What are you talking about...? You say all that as if the Americans remake the whole anime themselves.

When it comes to differences in manga to anime is simple... if the anime was 100% like the manga, why bother with both? The Japanese decide this, not the Americans.

Or is it the small differences such as changing the word "S***" in the manga to "darn" in the anime? Wow, big deal. They probably did that because they thought it didn't matter, it would just be bleeped out when aired right?

Other than lame anyways anime such as Naruto, One Piece, and Dragonball Z, the americans are not to blame. Would you really want to see baby Goku's thingy hanging out or something stupid like that?

My point of this topic is that Anime relesed in the US is diffrent than in Japan to appeal more to younger kids and how its watered down here in the US, nothing more.

Actually, US anime = jap anime with dubbing and without most of the unacceptable stuff.

The US does not change the story line and all, The Jap animators do.
This is generally cus they need to finish the series but the Manga hasn't ened yet.
So they make their own plot twists.
When it comes to US or where ever, the censor board of that country decieds what's acceptable and what's not.

Wow, that was very short.. why didn't you just say that in the first place instead of a whole story?

Well not many people really buy the dvds anyways, they go for bootlegs and downloads.

Well thats your opinion. Why pay 10$ more on a dvd for english vocals you might not like, and 2 minute previews of other anime? Some great extras those are.. Not to mention waiting for the dvd to load with all the ads you can't skip.

Well, that and as Al Kahn (Head Honcho of 4K!DS) said

"Kids Don't Read these Days"

Anyway, i've only bought 3 anime DVDs. 1 was a One Piece DVD i got cheap, but gave to a friend(8bucks for 3 eps, not worth it). The other 2 were bo-Bobo DVDs that hjad 4 eps apiece, but the DVDs were poorly made and menu volume was extrmeely loud(8 Episodes for 20 bucks, not for the quality of the relase)

But the animes aren't bad, just the packaging and features are
