I heard about this elsewhere. Of course, this is also just another "Wal*Mart does something sleezy" story. Objectively, it is not even the worst, most destructive thing they do. (Do not take that as a defense of Wal*Mart mind you.) I generally try to avoid Wal*Mart. This is actually pretty easy for me, as there are none around. (The nearest is tedious trip, involving commuter lines and buses, away.) Of course, most people who shop and Wal*Mart know this, and still shop there, as Wal*Mart in many areas is the only source of affordable consumber goods (including necessities), and often the largest employer in the area. (Wal*Mart is second only the the US Fed in terms of being a large employer.) So, many of Wal*Mart's customers and employees have no choice. Wal*Mart is like a modern, and nationwide, analogy to the old company stores. Dom -Merry Christmas. |

Wal-Mart gets bashed endlessly by the mainstream media and various left-wing political groups in this country, often very unfairly. Yeah, they have problems, but they employ a huge amount of people, and have decent prices. I know I grocery shop there very week, because I can save a lot of money by doing so. Hey... Transformers are cheaper there than anywhere else. |

On the other hand, Wal*Mart does a fair amount of economic and ecological damage at a basic, operational, level. Of course, you are right. A good many people (many of whom work at WM, rely on the low prices for basics like groceries. Wal*Mart has become a necessary evil. It is not a good thing to have around, but not having it is worse. I think the point of the article is more, "deal with them only when you need to." Dom -wonders how $100 a barrel oil will impact WM... |
