The last of the Romanov corpses have been discovered. (BBC news this morning) Well, it looks like after nearly 90 years, any speculation about surviving Romanovs can be put to bed. For much of the 20th century, populat myth had it that one or two of Tsar Nicholas's children survived. In the early and middle of the last century, 2 mental patients claimed to be one fo the Tsar's daughters, and his son. While the stories of neither held up, there was renewed interest in the possiblity that some of the Romanov clan may have survived when the bodies of the family were dug up in the 90s.

2 bodies were missing. This lent some, abeit shabby, credence to the idea of surviving Romanovs.

Now, despite the fact that there was amble reason, both based on evidence and speculation, that the entire family dies, some people clung to a childish belief that 1 or 2 of the kids survived. It did not matter that the family (and several retainers) were shot at close range, and then bayonetted. It did not matter that the missing bodies could be attributed to the fact that the execution squad was too drunk to shoot strait (hence their inability to kill the boy quickly). It did not matter that (drunk or not) they mutilated, buried, exhumed, reburied, and burned the bodies. (This of course would make a precise count of the remains difficult.) No, some people insisted that a few off the Romanovs survived.

Well, not, hopefully, we can move on. The Russian Revolution was a miserable time in history to be sure. And, it is tough to find anything good about it. But, clinging to the empty hope that any members of Russia's last royal family survived is not only foolish, it detracts from the sheer magnitude of what happened following the first World War.

If there is an afterlife, the Romanovs have all long since gone on to their reward. If not, well, flights of fancy do them even less good.

Dom-off to study a bit.

Keep it local.
