As most people know, there have been several attempted car-bombings in the UK since yesterday. The most recent seems to have been a near miss, with a flaming car being discovered in Glasgow, and 2 men under arrest. Whether these are part of a large, centrally controlled plot, or are independent actors/copy-cats is still a question. |

the timing of this is so off. It's iffy.. it's like.. I saw this coming.. but why didnt anyone else?I could be just being overly cynical (it happens). If the new PM comes out next week and says "We need more money to pump into anti-terrorism" I'll probably be sick. This would drive all the hype and conspiracy theorists mad though. The thing i can't understand about it is that ever since the UK opened up it's doors as a European Country we're so much more vunerable. About 48 hours later and the person that may of orchestrated the whole thing could be in Russia or anywhere else in the world for that matter. I don't have anything against connecting to other countries and being part of something BIG. I just think we've "let the gates open too far" Theres just so many stupid things that need to be sorted in the UK. The worst case situation at the moment is that people that save lives and do good in the country are underpaid compared to a professional footballer. He plays on average about twice a week if it's mid season. He complains that he's tired after a gruelling 55 games a season. He's every right to be.. but some of these jokers are on 100+ thousand pounds a week and dwarf the average of what a doctor or nurse can earn. The whole country has gone MONEY mad. Why have I mentioned this? One because it's something that drastically needs to be sorted out by our PM and two he'll probably request more money after this latest terrorist threat. Something that doesnt really sit well with me at all. Rich |

Even in a semi-controlled economy like England's, wages are determined in part by markets. People are more willing to see athletes make money than public safety officials. Is it good policy in and of itself? No, but it reflects popular sentiment. Security is a justified expenditure. And, conspiracy theories should not influence how security ops are conducted. As I said in a recent blog post, I have been under Federal scrutiny a few times, and never suffered for it. The UK has a better security force than the US though. More cameras, and more professional staff. |

Conspiracy theorists can take their conspiracies and shove it, thats all I've got to say on that. Its good to ask questions, but its stupid to be overly paranoid of people who are trying to protect your freedom from living in an Islamist theocracy. I guess people wont wake up until the threat is in their face, this is as dire a threat to me as the Nazis in WW2. |

Many people consider their own controllable fantasies to be pefereable to reality. Even as a kid, what did you prefer, the defined monster conjured up by your imagination, or the unknown of the dark closet that inspired you in the first place? On another note, this case presents *another* example of Europe being an incubator for radicalism. 2 of the plotters were not only well educated, they were well established (being practicing doctors) in England. It seems that US policies stir up ire, but that European life solidifies it in many cases. Can any of our European memebers shed light on this? I have personally met Muslims who actively liked living in America (for mostly prosiac reasons which are wholly credible), but did not look back on their time in Europe fondly. |

According to a report on the BEEB this morning, it seems that the attacks may have had something to do with the UK "knighting" Salman Rushdie. Zawahiri (the Egyptian Doctor) recently issued a statement condemning the knighting, and swearing revenge. I have no idea why the UK even knighted Rushdie. The man is not only lacking talent, but his work is needlessly inflamatory. Honestly, if the Ayatollah did not put a hit on him in the late 80s, Rushdie would have languished in well deserved obscurity. England knighting this guy was an idiotic, and it seems dangerous, gesture. The US may be stupid in its dealings with the rest of the world. But, in this case, England was just being petty, going out of their way to provoke a reaction from radicals (and likely annoying moderates). |
