;eek; http://www.tsn.ca/nba/news_story.asp?ID=134663&hubName=nba SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP-CP) - Denham Brown had 28 points and nine rebounds to lead Canada to a 92-76 win over the United States on Friday at the FIBA Americas World Championship qualifying tournament. Brown led a relentless offensive attack that saw Canada (1-1) shoot 59 per cent from the field against the U.S. (1-1), which saw its 30-game winning streak in FIBA qualifiers come to an end. Juan Mendez added 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Canadians, who led 49-28 at halftime and handily outdistanced their American counterparts in rebounding (35-25) and assists (16-9). Brown said Canada learned a valuable lesson from its tournament-opening 100-91 loss to Venezuela on Thursday. ''The difference between (Friday) and (Thursday) was simple: Intensity,'' said Brown, who is about to begin his senior year at the University of Connecticut. ''We have to play hard every game to be successful in a tournament like this.'' Head coach Leo Rautins applauded his team for bouncing back against the U.S. ''(Thursday) against Venezuela was a very disappointing effort,'' said Rautins. ''We came back, however, with great intensity. We really went after the U.S. defensively and that was the difference in the game.'' ''We also showed that when we execute offensively, we will score.'' Rautins also warned against letting down in Canada's next game Saturday against Panama. ''This doesn't mean anything if we don't come back and repeat this effort against Panama,'' he said. Lynn Greer had 21 points for the Americans (2-1), who appeared sluggish playing their third game in three days. Coach Mo McHone said his team came out flat, in part because of a big win over Brazil on Thursday. ''The way they came out is not surprising, but now we've got to get our focus back,'' said McHone. Canada showed more hustle from the opening whistle, in a game that was never close and exposed a sluggish side to the Americans, who beat tournament favourite Brazil in the last seconds. ''We never matched their intensity,'' said U.S. forward Aaron McGhee. ''We fell behind in the first half and never recovered.'' Elsewhere, Brazil (2-1) earned a 83-77 win over Panama (0-2). Marcelo Machado had 21 points and Guilherme Giovanonni added 18 for the Brazilians, who were playing without Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao. The six-foot-11 forward dislocated his shoulder in Thursday's loss and is returning to Brazil on Monday. In other action, Puerto Rico improved to 1-1 with a 90-75 win over Uruguay (1-2), while the Dominican Republic (2-0) earned a 104-94 triumph over Mexico (1-2). The host Dominican Republic (1-0) entertained Mexico (1-1) later Friday. The top four teams in the 10-nation event qualify for the FIBA World Championships in Japan next year. Argentina is participating but automatically qualifies as the Olympic gold medal winner in Athens last year. I don't think either team had any NBA'ers on it but it still snapped the USA's 30 game win streak in FIBA qualifying games. I'm sure the US will still go on to qualify and we'll end up choking as always. |
