Sportsnet.ca -- Shortly after making Marian Hossa the highest-paid player in franchise history, the Ottawa Senators have shipped the high-scoring right winger out of town.

The Senators have dealt Hossa and a player to be named later to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Dany Heatley.

Once the deal is made official, it is expected the Senators will lock up Heatly to a multi-year contract.

The Senators avoided arbitration with Hossa Tuesday morning, agreeing to a three-year deal worth $18 million. The contract put Hossa in the NHL top-20 in terms of salary, with his average of $6 million a year equaling the contract given to Markus Naslund of the Vancouver Canucks.

Hossa, who has accumulated more goals and points than Jarome Iginla and Vincent Lecavalier over the past two seasons, will make $5 million this upcoming season, $6 million in 2006-2007 and $7 million in the final year of the deal.

The Thrashers drafted Heatley second overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Heatley burst onto the NHL scene in 2001-02, leading all rookies in points (67) and assists (41). He was named the Calder Trophy winner as the League's best rookie in June 2002.

Heatley played two seasons with the University of Wisconsin, totaling 113 points (52 goals, 61 assists) in 77 games from 1999-2001.
