What do you think of the idea? Here in Canada, the CBC TV network is currently under a labour dispute. I don't really know all the details, but the employees of the Media Guild Union who work for CBC have all been locked out. This includes all the on-air personalities. So what they did for the CFL game tonight is simply broadcast the game without any commentators. No play by play, no half time show...etc. The only noises you hear are the fans, the stadium announcer, and the noise on the field (you could really hear the players swearing a lot better ;wink; ). Other than that, it was the normal feed. I remember a few years ago when one of the French TV networks had a similar labour dispute, all the Montreal Canadiens games they'd brodcast were all done with no commentators. This was a plus, because normally these games are only broadcast in French, and if you don't understand French it gets kind of annoying to listen too. ;up; I've also seen a few soccer games on TV without announcers. That was allright to watch. None of it's the same as actually being in the stadium/arena though. |

This reminded me of the labour dispute with cameramen (I believe) back in 1999, just as the Leafs were moving out of Maple Leaf Gardens and were about to open up the Air Canada Centre. In that case, I believe that a settlement was reached either the Friday night or Saturday, for the Saturday night opening of the ACC. So the announcers were in Washington, and couldn't get back to Toronto for the game, so instead they braodcast the first ever game in the ACC from a television set in the press box at a Washington Capitals home game - which was to be aired in place of the Leafs game if no camera crew was there. I have that game on tape still, and I remember it as well, and it was very weird because in the middle of the broadcast of the Leafs game you would hear sirens in the background from when the Washington Capitals scored a goal. I know this is unrelated to the CFL story, but it's just the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of weird broadcasts of sporting events due to labout disputes. |

They still had all that stuff on the screen. Plus you hear the stadium announcer after every play. |

Some blind lawyer in Calgary is apparently wanting to sue over this game. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I've only been to 3 CFL games in person so I don't remember exactly what's announed in-stadium... but did the stadium announcer seem to be added a bit more detail to his announcements, as if he was trying to provide a bit more information to the television viewer? |

I didn't really notice much of a difference. I think it's just different stadium, different announcer, different style. It looks like next Saturday's game will also be announcerless. Allthough I think the Lions are playing in it, so I can just turn on the radio for the play by play. |
