The Cancer for the Cure
|
I wrote this at three-thirty this morning having been woken up by the cat, thinking about something I read in a Nigel Warburton, which got me on to think about cremation, and lead, ultimately, to this being jotted in the pad I keep by my bed for such occurances. As such, it's rough and it's sleepy. Let me know which bits don't fit or don't flow if you spot any so I can adjust. Enjoy and ciao. Post-Mortem Ashes in the fireplace where you both warmed hands, And a miniature coffin on the mantle, Above it. Urn, ornate. She lies in state. But now the fire is electric. So you still burn on after she fades away Since the hearth, like your heart, still remembers. A mark from a scattered ember. But now you smoulder – crying on a cold shoulder. Sometimes in that big bed you wonder If it wouldn’t be better to join her in the urn. A nice place, cosy and homely, Or side by side in matching jars. But the question you keep coming back to is If I died now, whose mantle would that be If not ours? |
