when was the last time that happened? http://www.cbc.ca/story/sports/national/20..._cup050809.html Second-seeded Lleyton Hewitt and third-ranked Andy Roddick made surprise exits Tuesday at the ATP Rogers Cup in Montreal. Hewitt was forced to retire from his first-round match with French qualifier Florent Serra because of a stomach virus. Roddick was throttled 7-5, 6-3 by Paul-Henri Mathieu of France in the opening round. "I thought he played great," Roddick said. "He really took it to me, so I was playing reactive instead of active." Top-seeded Rafael Nadal, the reigning French Open champion, needed three sets to defeat fellow Spaniard Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-7 (0-7), 6-3. "The first match is never easy," Nadal said. "To play three sets with some important moments, that's important for the confidence." Nadal, winner of eight clay tournaments this season and currently riding an 11-match winning streak, next meets Ricardo Mello from Brazil. Serra was leading Hewitt 4-3 in the first set when Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam champion from Australia, informed the umpire that he couldn't continue. It was only the second time that Hewitt forfeited an ATP match. "I haven't been able to eat anything the last three or four days, which just really hit me up because I've got no energy whatsoever right at the moment," he said. Roddick, who won the Rogers Cup two years ago and lost to Roger Federer in last year's final, was coming off his fourth title of 2005 at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, DC. But he couldn't handle the dazzling play of Mathieu, who was the last direct acceptance into the main draw. "It just felt totally different out there than it did just two days ago," Roddick said. "The court, the balls, they are all a little bit different (and), you know, I just didn't adjust." The match finished on an ace from Mathieu ace, who faces fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the second round. Clement advanced by virtue of 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jose Acasuso of Argentina. Elsewhere on Tuesday, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain dismissed seventh-seeded Argentine Guillermo Coria 6-3, 6-2; No. 12 Thomas Johansson of Sweden handled Croatian veteran Ivo Karlovic 6-1, 7-5; American Taylor Dent eliminated 13th-seeded Croatian Ivan Ljubicic 1-6, 7-5, 6-3; and Sweden's Robin Soderling subdued No. 14 Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4. |

wow, first round losses, I doubt that has ever happened to both at the same time. That guy Roddick played might be someone to watch at the US Open. |

I'm sick of Lleyton Hewitt. Great tennis player, but they plaster his relationship with Bec Cartwright all over here...frustrating... |

Nadal ended up winning the tournament. It's his first ATP win that was NOT on clay. He beat Agassi. lol, that was quite the age difference in the final. |
