Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - The NBA announced Friday that the All-Star Game will head to Las Vegas in 2007, marking the first time the event will be held in a city without a professional basketball team.

NBA Commissioner David Stern said that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) will serve as the host organization for NBA All-Star 2007.

The celebration, which is one week long, will conclude on Sunday, February 18, 2007 with the 56th All-Star Game from the Thomas & Mack Center. The arena is the current home of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels.

Among the festivities planned for NBA All-Star 2007 are the Rookies-Sophomores game; the Shooting Stars competition; the Skills Challenge; the Three-Point Shootout; the Slam Dunk Contest; the All-Star Legacy Project and Jam Session.

The Thomas & Mack Center, which seats 18,500 for basketball, has already begun renovations on the locker rooms, but it is still unclear as to whether the league will take advantage of these upgrades.

This will not mark the first time that the NBA will play in the arena as the Los Angeles Lakers play an annual preseason game at the Thomas & Mack Center. However, Daren Libonati, the Thomas & Mack Center's executive director does not anticipate any problems.

"It won't be that much different, only a grander scale," Libonati recently told the Las Vegas Review Journal. "We deal with this every year with the Lakers. The big difference this time is instead of dealing with one team, we're dealing with an entire league."

Casino operators have already agreed to not take bets on the game, one of the requirements the NBA had wanted when they first discussed the possibility of holding the event in Las Vegas.
