There are 209 countries competing. That's more than the Olympics. I've been waiting for this all summer. It get's underway Saturday. Here's the schedule World Record holder Asafa Powell won't be running in the 100m. :( There's an outside chance he could be in the 100m relay for Jamiaca though... Justin Gatlin has outright said he's going to break Powell's record at these games. So that will be something to watch for. Hicham El Guerrouj, and Kelly Holmes also won't be competing due to sickness/injury. In other IAAF news, -they are seeking a 4 year ban for first time steriod offenders -they decided to keep to the current one false-start rule for the next two years -and they tightened loopholes that allowed athletes to switch nationalities and compete for other countries |

I don't know what PAX is, but it appears to be the only American network covering the games For Canadians, it'll be on CBC |

The first day was exciting to watch. Ethiopia swept the medals in the Women's 10,000m. At the bell for the last lap all three just blew away from the lead pack which included Paula Radcliffe. 19 year old Tirunish Dibaba won the gold, and her sister finished 3rd. Justin Gatlin, Francis Obikwelu, and Shawn Crawford all looked good in the 100m quarter finals. The fastest time though was Darrel Brown of Trinidad and Tobago in 10.11. The Womens Heptathlon was really exciting to watch. 4 of the 7 events were today. World and Olympic champion Carolina Kluft of Sweden leads former champion Eunice Barber of France by just 2 points! (3,973 to 3,971) Jessica Zelinka of Canada is in 8th after day 1 which is really good for her. In the mens shot put, three-time world champion John Godina failed to make the final. Fellow American Adam Nelson went on to win it though. The prelims of the men's 1,500 m and women's 800 m also took place today. Canadians Kevin Sullivan, Nathan Brannen, and Dianne Cummins all advanced to the semis in their events. The 1,500 m just isn't the same without Hicham El Guerrouj. :( The men's 20km racewalk was also today. Some guy from Ecuador won but I forget his name... |

Justin Gatlin won the 100m. Kim Collins managed to finish 3rd. Carolina Kluft managed to win the heptathalon. Shawn Crawford didn't qualify for the finals in the 100m. He was having trouble with his blocks before the race. The officials were telling him to move his foot. I thought we were going to see another Jon Drummond incident. |

I didn't see that about Crawford. But did see Gatlin win. It really wasn't that close. Kluft was exciting in the 800 knowing she had to be close to that other girl. And it was so nice that Nelson finally won a shot put title. |

I kind of see what you mean. I believe Asafa Powell (who wasn't there due to injury) is the only guy to run under 9.90 twice this year, and one of those was the WR. But I still believe that when you get the elite level, and get to the finals, all 8 men have a shot at winning it. On a bit of a side note, Gatlin reminds me so much of Donovan Bailey. Just with his running form, and the way they're both built. I think as he gets older and puts on more muscle it'll be easier to see the comparison better. In an interview he said he runs like Michael Johnson, but I don't really see that at all. |

It rained for most of Day 3 Lauryn Williams won the Women's 100m. Even though she's an excellent sprinter and won the Silver in Athens last year, it still came as a bit of a surprise to many. In the men's 10,000m. Ethiopians came 1st and 2nd. So of the 6 medals awarded for men and women at that distance, Ethiopia won 5. Kajsa Bergqvist of Sweden, won the women's high jump. Belarus dominated in the men's hammer, winning the gold and silver. Day 4 features the women's discus final, the women's 800 final, the men's 3000 steplechase final, and the men's 400m hurdles final. The men's 200 also starts with heats and the quarters tomorrow, and the men's decathalon starts as well. |

Pics That was really heatbreaking to watch Felix Sanchez have to pull up in the 400m hurdles. He's one of my favourite athletes in any sport. He's always been so dominate, but he's been battling injuries all this year. Bershawn Jackson ended up winning. He's going to be amazing to watch in the future. He's only in his lower 20's. It absolutely poured rain as they were doing the women's 100m hurdle heats. All 3 Canadians in it advanced to semis though once they finally got to race after a 2 hour delay ;up; The men's decathalon got underway. It was fun to watch. It should be a good finish tomorrow, especially if it comes down to the 1500. Maria Mutola's reign came to an end in the women's 800m. Zulia Calatayud of Cuba won gold. The men’s Javelin qualification round took place today. It's by far the most popular even in Finland. Tero Pitkämäki does have a shot at winning it on home soil as well, especially with the crowd behind him. |

Mutola finally lost. :( Did Perdita make the finals? Wow, they got lots of rain. Doing the hurdles in that had to be tough. Have they done the 110 hurdles yet? Or the 800? Lauryn Williams is young, even with the silver, this could be her step up to the top for awhile. |

Nah, Perdita came 4th in her heat in the semis. I wasn't expecting much from her at these games anyways. I did expect her to make the finals though, but I figured she'd have a tough time winning a medal with the seasons that Joanna Hayes and Michelle Perry have been having. Plus the two Jamaicans have looked really good. I think one of them could steal the gold away from Hayes or Perry. Bryan Clay dominated day 2 of the decathalon today. He easily won the gold over Sebrle of the Czech Republic. Clay's only 5'11''. That's pretty impressive for "the world's greatest all around athlete". In the men's 1500m final, Rashid Ramzi of Bahrain ended up winning. Alan Webb went out real fast with about 2 laps to go, but he faded and ended up 9th. The 110 hurdles did start today. Allen Johnson, Liu Xiang, and Ladji Doucouré all qualified for the semis. The mens 200m semi finals were today. Tyson Gay, John Capel, Justin Gatlin, and Usain Bolt, the 18 year old Jamaican all qualified. If the final goes the way qualifying did, the US will come 1,2,3 and 4. Canadian Tyler Christopher was quite impressive in the 400m semis. He had the fastest time of all the heats in qualifying for the final. He'll have to work hard to beat Jeremy Wariner of the US though in the final. Tonique Williams-Darling of Bahamas won the women's 400. Tianna Madison of the USA won the women's long jump at just 19 years old. The most popular event in the stadium today though would've been the men's javelin final. It's to Finland, what hockey is to Canada. Andrus Värnik of Estonia ended up winning it with a throw of 87.17 m. Finland's Tero Pitkämäki came a disapointing 4th. The men's 800 heats start tomorrow. |

wow, Perdita didn't make the finals. Were the finals run yet? Wow, Clay is 5'11" and wins the decathalon, very impressive. Never heard of that guy who won the 1500. I've heard of Tianna Madison. Wow, she won it. She sets all sorts of records in high school. |

On Day 6, Michelle Perry won the 100m hurdles. Joanna Hayes, who won in Athens, tripped and fell. The two Jamaicans were 2nd, and 3rd. The USA went 1,2,3,4 in the men's 200m. Justin Gatlin won to complete the sprint double. Today, on Day 7 -Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia set a world record of 5.01m in the women's pole vault. -In the men's 4x100 heats, the US team dropped the batton and were disqualified. -Allyson Felix won the women's 200m. Christine Arron of France came 3rd to pick up her 2nd bronze. -Ladji Doucouré of France won the men's 110m hurdles by .01 seconds over Liu Xiang. Allen Johnson showed he's still got it, to finish 3rd. Here's the photo finish -the best race of the night though, and possibly the best race of the championships was the men's 400m. The top 4 runners all ran personal bests. Jeremy Wariner ran under 44 seconds. He's the first to do that since Michael Johnson. It was the 7th fastest run of all time. Andrew Rock was 2nd, and Canada's Tyler Christopher was 3rd. He set the national record with his time. |

wow, that was a close finish in the hurdles. I was hoping Johnson would have won since he might not be around much longer. I wish I would have seen the 400. Wariner is awesome. Wonder if he will break Johnson's record. I thought each country could only send up to 3 people per event. And US guys finished top 4 in the 200. |
