http://www.cbc.ca/story/sports/national/20...ight050802.html Former CFL all-star Chris Wright was slain in a weekend shooting, authorities in Atlanta confirmed Tuesday. He was 34. Wright, from Valdosta, Ga., died of multiple gunshot wounds early Sunday morning. Wright's sister reportedly heard numerous shots fired in front of her house and rushed outside to find him laying dead in the street next to his vehicle. Additional details remain sketchy and no arrests have been made. Wright was a wide receiver and kick-return specialist for the now-defunct Baltimore Stallions, Montreal Alouettes and British Columbia Lions. Wright broke the CFL record for punt-return yardage by a rookie with 1,236 as the Stallions went on to win the 1995 Grey Cup, 37-20 over the Calgary Stampeders. In fact, he opened the scoring by returning a punt 82 yards for a touchdown just 2:12 into the contest. Wright also ran back 41 kickoffs for 897 yards that season, giving him 2,256 in total return yardage and eclipsing the rookie record of 2,202 held by Henry (Gizmo) Williams of the Edmonton Eskimos. "I can specifically remember the day I worked him out and he was a tremendous talent," recalled Alouettes general manager Jim Popp. "He was a tremendous success in 1995 and helped us win the Grey Cup." Wright sustained a season-ending knee injury on the first day of training camp in 1996, the year that the Stallions relocated to Montreal. "He did a lot to come back from that injury and gave us some productive years, two more in Montreal after that," Popps noted. "But I wouldn't say he was the same after the knee injury." Wright accumulated 1,088 yards on 52 kickoff returns as well as 769 yards and two touchdowns on 84 punt returns in 1997. A year later, he returned 31 kickoffs for 671 yards and 67 punts for 625 yards but failed to score a touchdown. Wright was released by the Alouettes in 1999, one day prior to qualifying for a $20,000 bonus, before a brief stint with B.C. That's sad to hear. I remember some of his plays. |
