MIAMI (Reuters) - Robbers shot Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle in the stomach as he sat in his parked car in a residential neighborhood southwest of Miami, police said on Friday.

The National Football League player underwent surgery and was in good condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Joanne Duncan said.

"It looks like he is going to be fine," she said.

McDougle, 26, was in his new silver Mercedes waiting for a friend on Thursday night when three robbers approached, took his watch at gunpoint and demanded his wallet, Duncan said.

"As he was reaching for his wallet one of the subjects panicked and shot him in the abdomen," she said.

Another of the robbers fired twice into McDougle's car, missing him, and all three fled on foot, Duncan said.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jerome and his family," the Eagles said in a statement.

McDougle, who was due to report to the Eagles training camp on Monday, is from Pompano Beach, Florida, and played at the University of Miami. He was the Eagles' first-round draft choice in 2003 and has battled through two injury-plagued seasons in Philadelphia, missing 13 regular season games.
