http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/Art...ntertainment/TV You can question Kirstie Alley's judgment, but nobody can deny the lady has guts. The former Cheers star launches her TV comeback this week in Fat Actress. The Showtime series casts Alley as, basically, herself -- a once-popular TV and movie star, also named Kirstie, whose substantial weight gain has derailed her career. The role is not even slightly removed from Alley's real life: Ever since NBC pulled her sitcom Veronica's Closet in 2000, Alley slowly but steadily packed on weight until reaching her current size, which she estimates at roughly 200 pounds. Although every joke in the new show comes at the expense of Alley's weight, Alley swears there's more to Fat Actress than meets the eye. "The show is really more about the state of mind of women," claims Alley, "and how easy it is to sort of prey upon their insecurities. It's more than just about being fat." Perhaps, but all the pre-show promotion attached to Fat Actress has focused entirely on Alley's weight. In the show, she's harassed by tabloid photographers constantly trying to snap her picture -- another real-life reality. She's also trying to re-establish her career, which is nearly impossible because of her weight gain. In fact Alley says she was only vaguely aware of how big she'd become after screening the show. "After I saw the first episode, I was like, 'Oh, my God. I have the fattest ass in the world. I had no idea I was that fat. So this show has been very cathartic for me." Fat Actress is filmed in a semi-improvisational style, not unlike Curb Your Enthusiasm, with an extended list of Hollywood stars playing themselves. Since Alley is playing herself, most of the storylines are based on famous people from her past who now want nothing to do with her. In one scene, Alley pleads for a job with her former Look Who's Talking co-star John Travolta, who can't get away from her quickly enough. Time and again, the point is made that Alley's market value in Tinseltown is near zero -- at least the current puffy version -- which, again, Alley claims is the real deal. "I've had agents call me and go, 'Yeah, you're too fat.' Or, 'They just saw you on the cover of The Star and they think you weigh 500 pounds.' So there's reality in it." To her credit, Alley is making the most of her currently expanded state. As Fat Actress progresses, her plan is to shed the poundage and gradually drop down to her ideal weight of 140 pounds. Alley has also signed a lucrative deal as spokesperson with the Jenny Craig diet program, and is currently writing a book, which she's calling How to Lose Your Ass and Regain Your Life. "Eventually I'll lose the weight," she says. "I want to be a really skinny fat actress."n It sounds pretty bad to me. |
