The Simpsons, or Family Guy ;noway;

When it comes to cartoon nudity, Fox has bottomed out.

Entertainment president Gail Berman told critics yesterday that the network -- heavily fined by the U.S. regulator last fall for violating broadcast standards -- has censored their edgy cartoon comedy Family Guy.

"We pixilated animated butt, two weeks ago," Berman told a small gathering of critics after her executive session press conference.

The offending butt belonged to Stewie, Family Guy's diabolical baby. The four-year-old episode had run uncensored for several seasons.

The whole thing was a bummer, said Berman, who stressed that the censorship was not a reaction to viewer requests. "We did it because it was right after we had just been cited for indecency and we have to be a responsible broadcaster." Berman blamed shifting standards at the Federal Communications Commission for broadcast limits confusion. "We have to be second- and third-guessing ourselves now and that's not easy to do," she said.

Fox is currently challenging an FCC ruling levelling a $1.2-million fine at the network for an episode of Married By America. Parent groups complained to the FCC last summer after stumbling upon wild sex scenes on the little-seen series.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, also at the L.A. press tour yesterday, dismissed the 'toon tush coverup, or derriere debacle, as part of the dreaded "post-Janet Jackson world."

"Fact is, everybody has an ass -- it's not gender specific," said MacFarlane.

Fox, which is tired of having its kicked, is appealing the fine. They argue that the fact cable networks like HBO and its own FX (home to ass-friendly adult dramas Nip/Tuck and The Shield) get a free ride -- renders the FCC ruling unconstitutional.

The FCC's going way to far.

America! FUCK YEAH!

So in a country that's so proud about its freedom of speech and freedom of expression, they can't show a cartoon cos it has a cartoon drawing of an ass on it? Gotta love America dontcha.

LOL @ American censorship. So hypocritical and over-sensitive.

I mean, Friends was a pre-watershed show about 6 people essentially growing up and trying to get laid. In Britain it's shown normally at 7.30am each weekday morning and 8.30pm each Friday night, with sometimes episodes on at about 11am or 2pm at the weekend. Anyway, I digress (dammit)

Now, that can get away with tons of sexual references, but Fox has been fined for showing a baby's backside. In Britain that kinda thing doesn't even run through the censors' office - it's just stuck in - we can get away with a whole lot more because (I think) America is a much more religious and (IMO) over-sensitive country.

I notice the huge difference too. Canadian networks are far less prone to censor things. Basic network TV shows nudity and "coarse language" all the time. One network airs 'The Sopranos' in prime time. Another shows unedited movies 6 nights a week, all completely uncensored, whether it contains sex scenes, extreme violence, bad language...etc. And all these networks are the Canadian equivilant of FOX, NBC, CBS...etc.

This whole thing obviously arose from the Janet Jackson Superbowl incident last year. And I think that's where the differences start. American networks, whenever they show a clip of it, they blur it and censor it. Canadian networks don't. People here just basically say "What's the big deal?"

Osbournes are uncensored in Canada. :D hahahahah. and that's not even on a cable network... at least, when i remember seeing it before. Similar to the Sopranos mentioned above.

to have cartoon asses censored though is just... ..... beyond stupid. whatever.

WE HAVE SHOWS LIKE TRAILER PARK BOYS ! (had to add that since it was mentioned in another thread)
