If you want an interesting character, you need a character with background, with interesting features and interesting mannerisms. A wizard in a robe holding a staff with fire magic isn't nearly as interesting as a scitzophrenic wizard who dresses in leather with a half-veiled face, uses a magical gauntlet controlle by telekinesis, and comes from a land of sea-turtle riders (not a very serious history, but more interesting!) For those of you who need or want help creating interesting, memorable characters, I've decided to make a step-by-step guide to help you through the process. You don't need to follow every step, but the more detail you put into your character, the more interesting it will be. I will leave this topic open so you can post questions or suggestions. That said, here we go! ======================================================== There are three broad categories that affect a character. These are location, relations, and life events. I'll discuss each one in turn, and how it applies to your character's history, profession, and mannerisms. LOCATION: a character who comes from a seafaring people who live on harsh, barren cliffs will be much different from a character who hails from a midland rainforest. Likewise, a small-town countryman is different from someone in the big city and the height of civilization. When creating a character, consider: 1. What was the terrain like? Was it forested, grassy, desert, rocky, mountainous, coastal? 2. What was the climate, humidity. etc. (it doesn't have to be scientific)? 3. What was the city he lived in like? Big or small? How populated? How "civilized?" What were its major trades and what was the populace like? What classes were there (nobility, middle-class, poor, slaves)? 4. What was the government like? Monarchy, Theocracy (religious rule)? Democracy? How it affects your character's history: different trades are common in different areas. If your character was on the coast, he may have been a fisherman. In a desert, he may have been a shepherd. Likewise, as your hometown gets larger, more advanced professions are available. A small hamlet might have a blacksmith, but only a large city might have a master sculpter. Location has an impact on what happens to your character, too - not so much terrain, but it plays a part. If he lived in a forest, he might have been caught in a forest fire. If he lived in a large town, he might have gotten caught up in organized crime. If he lived in a monarchy, he might have been subject to a tyrant. How it affects your character's profession: it'd be prety strange to find a fisherman in a desert tribe, or a logger on coastal cliffs. Likewise, you can guess at one or more of your character's skills and which ones he'd be lacking by thinking about where he came from. A former logger could probably climb, construct simple tools and structures, camp, and maybe swim, but probably not farm. How it affects your character's mannerisms: this really is determined by how much of your character's culture you want to design. Maybe everyone from his city treats a conversation like a wager, or it's considered polite to touch your elbows together. Be creative, and don't be afraid to do it even if it sounds strange. (I'll post more later) |
