Name: Unknown Nickname: Tread Age: 19 Birthday: September 22nd Race: Sho (Human + Shii) Advantages: Adaptable, Agile, Disadvantages: Weak Magic, Primitive, Tradition Sex: Male Alignment: Neutral Good Occupation: Beggar and General Dogsbody Job Class: Unknown (Tread has yet to find his place in the world), although handy with a quarterstaff. Appearance Born of a drunken and ill-fated union between a human and his Shii mother, the half-breed known only as Tread (a sarcastic misnomer thrust onto him by his luckless mother before she passed away) had little going for him. A distinct lack of confidence combined with an aura of filth overpowered the wild good looks that he inherited from his human father. An uneasy birth, Tread came into this life a cripple and has since forever been cursed with a lame left leg and gnarled upper body. Since the early age of 5 he adopted a burnt and blackened staff of ash which he continues to hunch over to this day. Tread's dreary existence in the backalleys of Esto Gaza has only reinforced his wild appearence, his grey eyes glittering from beneath his long unkempt hair. Ignoring the twisted hunch of his upper-back and the frailties of his mauled and distorted left leg, standing at 6 foot while hunched, Tread strikes an imposing figure. Years of punishment and cruelty from his street urchin peers had left him hardy and used to pain. His work as indiscriminate pack animal to a local merchant meant that beneath the rags and filth of his craft his body contained a strength that has, in the past, often been underestimated. Over the years the Shii part of Tread's mind had delighted in the curious baubles and trinkets that gather in the copious litter of Esto's backways. As a result of this, his person seemed to be a magnet for a vast array of worthless junk, which Tread secreted in the number of niches and pockets beneath his ragged and filthy woolen poncho. Most prized amongst these taudry possessions are a little bronze knife with which he dutiously yet inexpertly uses to shave off most of his stubble each morning, a small reed pipe that sows much discord in the evenings and an old and much-worn stuffed animal. The stuffed animal lovingly referred to as "Bear", is Tread's erstwhile companion in all things adventurous. His only remaining possession given to him from his long dead mother it is cherished above all else. Taking an honorary position strapped to the stout leather belt about his waist, "Bear" assists in all of Tread's most difficult decisions, and is one of the main reasons that has led Tread to cast off his unhappy street-life and explore the larger world. Inventory Weapons: Quarterstaff: Gnarled and black, Tread has learnt to use his trusty old quarterstaff as an extension of his body, replacing and yet complementing the frailty of his left leg. Armor: Ragged linen Shirt. Heavy Woolen Poncho: Customised with a plethora of handwoven secret pockets, Tread's poncho serves as a sleeping rug, hold-all and cloak in one. Leather trousers: Recently discovered in a refuse bin outside a wealthy merchants Tread's leather trousers are new comfortable. Accessories: Random Junk: Tread attracts random junk. Ribbon: Tread has attached a small cut of green ribbon to the top of his otherwise ugly staff. Other Items: Coin Bag: A Bag containing Tread's funds. It's empty. Likes: Nice people, Rain, "Bear", Stars, Animals especially rodents and dogs. Dislikes: Himself, Bad people, Being hit, Fighting Fears: Bad People, Fire, Cemeteries, The Night, Heights, Depths, Lots of people Hobbies: Finding "interesting stuff", Reading, Being Hit, Talking to "Bear", Eating, Exploring the streets, Being Hit. Aspirations: Travelling with a group of friends. Finding a group of friends. Personality From manner and appearance Tread is seen to be simple and dim-witted. However although his shii background and blood has made him think with what he likes to call "a lack of scope", at times he has been known to say surprisingly sharp and clever things which bely a buried untrained intelligence. This does not stop him from being extremely naive, and trusting wholly in the kindness of other men. Tread is a kindly soul who goes out of his way to help others in the small ways that he can. He is greatly generous and he has often been known to share or even give up a meal to the sick or elderly streetsmen and women who plague the area in which he lives. Consequently people have taken advantage of this in the past, sometimes fooling Tread out of a proper dinner for days on end. The abuse of his peers which include the thieves, muggers and bullies of the area has left Tread with a quiet, self-contained demeanor while forging in him a strong instinct for survival. The constant beatings of multiple opponents has left him humble with a distinct lack of confidence in his own abilities. Although having lived a rather isolated existence, he looks forward to the day when he can adventure in a party of other like-minded people who not only our his friends but welcome him as an equal. Despite not having many people he can call friend, Tread has a great affinity with the animals of the streets. Often been seen taking lunch amidst a pack of sedated yet usually ravenous street mongrels, Tread's wild and shambling demeanor seems to pose no threat to beasts allowing him occasionally to befriend an otherwise shy or aggressive animal. History Tread was born on the 22 September, conceived of a drunken night of passion between an unknown human father and his Shii mother. His mother, Bella, never saw his father since that day and Tread has learnt to forget about him. After a difficult pregnancy, Tread's mother simultaneously doted and despised Tread for the foolishness that he represented. The unplanned and unwanted birth left Bella, depleted and never really recovering from the childbirth, died just after Tread had reached the age of 3. Pity is what allowed Tread to survive the early years of his life. Much liked in the community, Bella's death was a tragedy and thus, at first, the other mothers of the slums fed and cared for her crippled child. However their sympathy for his peculiar ways did not last long and on his fifth birthday Tread was left to fend for himself. The next few years are a blurry haze of beatings, begging and scrounging in Treads memory and little of it is important enough to ever recount. By the age of 10 Tread had begun to learn to fight back against the older boys who constantly tormented him and with a grudging apprehension was initiated into a small group of kids who stole for a living. And so it was that Tread briefly lived the life of a thief and learned the rudiments of pick-pocketing. The strength the little gang had was in the age and number of the pack. An unsuspecting victim would often stay unsuspecting right up until he felt for his wallet to find it missing and the little gang of boys would by that time be safely scattered and swallowed by the city. The Cut-Purse way did little to appeal to Tread. He disliked it as dishonest, indiscriminate and crude. Despite this Treads inherited Shii dexterity made him a useful ally in the craft. It was only until the gang were caught for an unsuccessful hit and all of them laying the blame on Tread, that he had had enough. After a brief period in a cell the local constabulary let him off with only a quiet warning deeming him a harmless youngster. At around this time the local pawn merchant took him on and Tread worked like a slave for 4 years. His meagre pay would only go towards food and the occasional bauble from the market but it was enough to survive on. Endlessly tread would haul around items to and from the great warehouse. Come his 19th birthday though, after a long discussion with "Bear", Tread decided that he should seek a life of adventure like he saw in the little picture books that he occaionally would find. Thus, leaving his familiar alley home behind, Tread made his way to the market and promptly spent his weeks savings on a little green ribbon, a tinderbox and a new needle and some thread, what he deemed all essential items for adventuring. Tieing the little green ribbon to the top of his staff and smiling to himself, satisfied with the result, Tread made his way to the adventuring haven of Graith Pub. |
