The Colonel Baron sat in Ivendell Keep. He wished the Dauphin would return here with her court. He sighed. All along the Aizion river, the gates of Eden were well guarded from attack. The thousands of black giants, the zeppelins of Eden, hovered above the wall where a great many men lay in wait. The Western sea fleet guarded the harbor, so that no ships could sail into the city. The western shores of the Isthmus was also protected from attack, the eastern sea fleet doing their duty there. The southern Air Fleet guarded Vulcan while the eastern and western air fleets flew over their respected area. The Northern Air fleet was guarding the Edo-serdian border. A small number of ships, a hundred or so, of the eastern air fleet was in Zeal but would be recalled soon. There was no trouble from the south, in Vulcan and in fact there were reports that the conscription there was going very well, very well indeed. The Colonel Looked at the letter again from the Sergeant Viceroy and read: To: The Colonel Baron of the Gates of Eden From: The Sergeant Viceroy of Vulcan Most Honored Sir, I am pleased to report that progress of the native army is coming along at a great rate. Already seven of the twenty Legions have completed their duty and are on patrol throughout the desert. The Labor camps and reservations are progressing at a very efficient rate and is proving to be quite productive. Industrialization is going on at a extreme pace and there are already seventeen hundred miles of railroad all through the country. Most excellent, most excellent, the Colonel Baron thought. This was most excellent news indeed. |

The car the guards took Drake in was simple and done in the typical military style. At Ivendell, which was their destination, the Dauphin was waiting. She had none of her ladies except Cosette with her. There were a number of other officials. Irulan wore a black day dress with a gray ribbon across the waist and matching hat, gloves and shoes. Cosette wore a black day dress with black ribbon, hat, gloves and shoes. The military uniforms of most of the men were somber and plain. The politicians wore plain black suites. “Hail Irulan” The heralds shouted as drake was helped up the steps. The Dauphin offered him her arm and they walked into the hall accompanied by the entourage. “Your Grace, I have left the court to be here with you. Agusta is very safe you see. You will be most comfortable here... think of it has your home” All the people were now in the hall. “I believe you have met the Colonel Baron.. he is the one who is commanding the Eden forces” she gestured to a prim man in black. He saluted, Eden style. “Hail Irulan” he intoned. |

"Thank you, your lady." Drake said to Irulan as they walked up the steps. Drake nodded to the Colonel Baron, bowing in honor. "Yes, we've met, but it was brief. It is nice to see you are in good health Colonel." |

The Motorcade drove into Agusta. It was rainy and the sky was dark, obscured as it was by the zeppelins that guarded it so well, that hardly anything could enter. It was raining. Ivendell keep was especially well guarded. Only Irulan was there, on the steps leading up to the porch. The cars stopped and the Emperor got out. He walked up, ahead of his “guards.” until he was face to face with his future wife. She had cast off her war garb for him, and wore a white day dress. The sash around her waist was blue. Her shoes were blue felt and her white hat also had a blue sash and a sheer blue veil. Her gloves were bordered in lacy blue. She looked very girlish and despite himself, Leto thought she looked very pretty too. Much prettier than when she had first arrived. Her face was a bit less angular and Leto suspected she had used a bit of magic to alter her face just a bit. But she still looked natural. “I hope you don't hate me” she said. She looked at her feet rather ashamed like. “Dismiss these guards and give me back my regency. If you cooperate your punishment wont be too harsh.” he said quietly and calmly. “Im afraid she has no power over that” a voice said. The Prime Minister stepped forward. “I refuse to recognize your regency. I heard of that shenanigan you pulled down south. I’m arresting you as a war criminal. Where is that man you had with you?” Leto's face contorted in rage. “You little bitch you set me up!” He shouted at Irulan and raised his arm, the Dauphin flinched. A second later he had been attacked by the guards and was being pulled down and handcuffed. “If you address the Dauphin in such a state again I’ll have you sentenced to death.” Leto looked up at the Prime Minister. “You have no right. That's the military's responsibility and I’m head of the military.” “Not anymore” another voice said and from the porch stepped the Colonel Baron. “That's it my dear, you may go” he said to Irulan, who fled back into the hall. “Neither you or that poor girl has any power over the military anymore. I’m in control” “You little shit” Leto spat at both men, his face pressed into the cold hard steps of the palace. “Your making a scene” The Prime Minister said coldly. “Guards, take him in. “ he two men ascended the steps and entered the palace. A Gag was placed over the Emperor’s mouth. He was dragged up the steps and into the Palace. |

Drake quickly left the scene and decided that perhaps going back to Serdio would be best. Drake quickly borded his airship and within hours was back home in Mystice. |

Irulan entered the Imperial Suit. Leto had been starved for news, since he had not been let in or out and his only visitors were the quite maids who brought him his meals. She looked as if she was about to go out somewhere. She had on a white day dress, over which was a white pea coat. Over this, draped like a cape, was a heavy fur coat lined in light blue silk. She wore a day hat and held a purse in her arms. “Your Grace” he said sarcastically. “ The war is over.” Irulan said quietly. “We won” “Im so pleased” he said back. “Im pregnant”. There were a moment of silence. Leto, calmly replied: “Well it isn't mine you little slut” She smiled sadly. “It is. And you will marry me.” “You betrayed me” He spat. “This whole thing was for you.... you will be freed soon and will take on the power of Emperor again.” “Why are you dressed up?” he asked. She smiled weakly. “There is a victory parade. Good by Leto” She turned and left the room. |

“I’m afraid the Emperor, is ah.... indisposed and cant attend. Her Grace the Dauphin Regent-as you may or mayn’t of heard- is with child and must get her rest. The Baron Colonel has a great deal of military administration to oversee, taking troops out of Bali and what not. Our resident ambassador in the palace will attend though, and send us back the most illustrious reports” The Steward smiled happily. |

The Colonel Baron was in a huff. He stuffed clothes and money into a suitcase, mostly money. That little whore had sold him out! After the Merian disaster, the War Government had been voted out, and before another election had occurred Irulan had asked the President to form a liberal coalition government. The President, who was now Prime Minister as well, demanded the release of Leto and the restoration of his regency. The President knew that his government was on the so so line between legal and illegal, so he had to turn on his former ally to make sure that the voters remained faithful. The Dauphin had been only so happy to oblige, and now the Emperor was headed this way. The Colonel Baron had to use all his strength to remain calm. He closed the suitcase, heavy with gold. He hoisted it up. He would escape through the servant's corridors before the Emperor could punish him. He would take a car and drive out of the Delta. He would go to Bali. That would be safest. Yes. He heard footsteps and he turned wildly. He ran into the library of his apartments. In the other room he heard the guards pounding at the door. He lifted up a candle, and a false wall opened. The front door of his apartments was broke. He heard the click of military boots even clearer now, before plunging into the darkness of the servants corridor... ***** Leto stood in plain military uniform. His hat was off and under his arm. "Hail Leto" One of the commanders walked in. "The Colonel Baron isn't here Sir. He must of escaped somehow..." Leto sighed. "Well.... Make sure you find him" With that the Chancellor Emperor turned and walked out of the room. "Yes Sir" The commander said quietly. |

Leto sat in his office reading the Agusta Times. He spewed over the Serdian press conference, as he read over the article: “In International news, shortly after Eden condemned Imperialism, Serdio themselves stepped forward and declared their own condemnation of colonialism. Many political analysts think this is a tactic in which the Serdians hope to discourage Imperialist competitors. "Hello, I am Mr. Ganges, and I have been chosen by the constitutional committee to make an appearance to declare a few things. Firstly, Serdio declares that the high censorship of the talks in the Locus have been lifted, and have returned to their pre-Jamina ways, despite the fact Serdio still owns Jamina. Secondly, Serdio wholeheartedly condemns any Imperialism in the homelands* of Zelpha. If a nation wishes to seek colonies, they should sail out into the seas and discover." The Representative said. As the Agusta times is concerned with looking beneath the surface of things, our correspondent in the field inquired: “Sir, how can Serdio say this when in the previous war Serdio gained many colonies in the homelands?” To which the response was: "What we gained, we deserved. We wish to stop any future colonialism, to preserve the independence of Bali, East ZEAL, and Vulcan. We do not wish to however gain anymore territory in the Homelands, or even beyond the sea. .despite what radical Garleist papers around the world say." This is of course ridicules since not only was it Eden that occupied Bali, but that half of West Zeal was originally settled by Eden and ceded by us to Serdio. Our faithful correspondent, understanding these delicate matters asked: “Sir, it seems more likely that this whole press conference is a tool your government is using to keep colonial competitors out of Bali and Zeal. If we may remind you, it was Eden that fully occupied Bali, and I don't recall any Serdian involvement in Zeal. It seems that Serdio had only enough strength to take Jaminia and then resist the onslaught of Balian and Zealian troops. “It does not seem that Serdio earned colonies in either Bali or Zeal. If you were truly concerned about the independence of these two states, wouldn't it make more sense to simply abolish your colonial holdings there? To which the Serdians answered vary distastefully, "Indeed, we didn't aid in the occupation of Bali, our great allies Eden did. But Serdio DID have part in the dividing of West ZEAL. And are you mocking the great war machine of Serdio? We may not be able to pull off brilliant schemes like Eden, but we are a powerful nation. We will never abolish our holdings. The weak give back. Mr. Ganges obviously thought that this would go right over the head of the reporter. But this is not so. It is and insult to Eden that Serdio blatantly attacks them in a public press conference, after we generously donated our holdings in Bali and Zeal to them. Of course our ever intelligent reporter summarized these statements when he asked: “It seems to my correspondents that the only part you had in dividing West Zeal was the part Eden allowed you to have. And your avoiding the question, if your truly against Imperialism in the homeland than you would give back your Imperial holdings. If you don't, this whole conference is hypocritical and a stain on the reputation of your government.” To which the Diplomat responded: Your correspondents are wrong, we staked four fort cities in ZEAL at the same time as Eden. Do not spread lies, you filthy reporter. Yes, we are against FUTURE Imperialism in the Homelands, but else where is fine. As for our holdings, our government will not be returning them. The weak give back." Again, good readers, did this scum, this Serdian diplomat insult our national pride! I, on behalf of my readers, demand that the government breaks all diplomatic ties between a nation that is so treacherous to insult the very state that faithfully served it in the last war! Of course our reporter is always on the cutting edge of opinion and stated: “Your obviously trying to get a rise out of me by implying that Eden is weak for returning the colonies it conquered Yet you are not creative enough to come up with any other expression besides ‘The Weak Give Back’. The Serdian ‘War Machine’ is certainly in trouble when you are the best representative they can send. Although since the message is hypocritical I suppose they couldn't get anyone else to come out here and be able to preach this BS with a strait face. “You are not very skilled at diplomacy if you so alienate your allies by blatantly calling them weak in public press conferences. Im sure my readers in Agusta will be most distraught. “And for the record, Eden is not weak. Eden is just and fair and kind. I believe the great Prince Alaska said ‘Colonies are like the fine furs poor nobles use to hide the fact that they have no shirts’. “As for me I have grown tired of listening to this. So I shall take my leave. Good bye” Our reporter could no longer stomach these horrid Serdian lies, that they taunted about in public, mocking us! I restate my demand that the Prime Minister disband all diplomatic relations! The days of colonies and far reaching empires are over. It is time that we recognize the natural boundaries that the gods set down. Yes, the ancient Merian Empire was the epitome of Imperialism, but that was in another time, a long ago time where people didn't know better. It is time now to recognize that each country, with boundaries set by gods, has a right to rule over itself. It is an unclean and unpure nation that lives, like ticks or mosquitoes, off the labor of an unwilling state! We call on the government to more harshly rebuke states that indulge in this mal practice! |

Irulan sat in the Imperial chambers. Par their agreement, Irulan would stay with Leto and his household until she gave birth. Then, she would be shipped off somewhere... probabally Galastar and live in exile. This was fine for her because she accepted it. She was starting to show. Because Leto wanted to be rid of her, a great number of magicians brewed potions and cast spells to hasten the pregnancy. Irulan was convinced this wasnt good for the baby, but said nothing. Instead she wrote. She wrote pages and pages, a novel it was going to be. The fire in the great fireplace was lit. It was dark outside. Cosette was curled up reading a book. It was a very strange, almost sisterly relationship the Empress shared with the consort. Leto also read. It was peaceful. |

Gen awoke. Sun streamed through her window. Her eye lids fluttered once, twice, thrice, then she opened them and sat up. The sheer curtain around her bed colored her chambers gold. She yawned, and immediately her bed curtain was pulled back. Song Hue, her secretary and confident stood giving orders, like a general to an army of domestics. “Madame” She said, curtsying ever so slightly. “Hello Hue” Gen said, getting out of bed. The Empress wore a light night gown. “What am I wearing this morning?” She asked. Three servants approached. A red knee length skirt was laid on the bed, as was a white blouse and red jacket; the day dress uniform that nearly every woman in the empire wore. Gen took her bath and then dressed. She wore the Imperial Signet ring. Gloves weren't worn with the day dress. She exited her chambers, into a vast marble corridor, just one of many that ran through Ivendell Keep. Ladies and lords, in morning dresses and morning suits greeted her as she walked through the vast palace. |
