Ysaar arrived a few minutes late, wearing a long, flowing red cloak with yellow trim and large silk pants with a similar color scheme. It had taken longer than he had hoped to find it, but the outfit was exactly the same as he had worn while governing Nu'Daio, and it was a suiting tribute to Meria as a whole. He quickly hunted down Leto and Wilks.

"I see the Edenian military still maintains the grandeur of old Meria," he commented from behind them.

“Yes” Leto said. “Well emulate Meria... all our ancient traditions were theirs...”

Suddenly the light waltz stopped. The lights dimmed and a blaring nearly offensive tune came on. “Hail to Mortikan*” Leto whispered. “He must of gone mad”

Atop the throne amidst an explosion of fire Cosette on the Arm of Tigris appeared. Cosette wore a gown of wanton beauty. It was a beaded bodice, black. There was no skirt but instead fine strings of black pearls that fell to the floor and made a little train. The bodice had no sleeves. Her hair was covered in a black snood.

Tigris wore a military uniform, but an old one. One that was more reminiscent of Mortikan than Meria or Eden.

Cosette and Tigris descended to the main floor of the hall and proceeded to dance. The aristocracy who were in attendance were horrified and clung to the wall. The Hall lost all its semblance of airy happiness and became more brooding and darker.

A shiver ran through the crowd as they watched the Dowager Emperor, looking exactly and dressing exactly like the Dark Lord dance with a woman who could of fit into the dark harem(*1) of the Dark Lord.

Ysaar knew the Hail to Mortikan from his childhood. And with the song came a flashback of the terrors wreaked upon his country by the real Mortikan roughly 115 years ago and his disembodied soul which continued to wreak havoc to this day. Clenching his fists, he transmitted a message to Leto and Wilks. If you distract Tigris, I can free Cosette. Our boat is waiting by the harbor, and she bears the old symbol of Nu'Daio. While an old yaught, I have utter faith in her.

He merged into the crowd and made his way towards Tigris secretly. As he struggled with his bloodlust, he prepared for the struggle with the will of Mortikan, inhabiting Tigris.

Irulan stood by a column. Leto-despite the scenario-noticed that her appearance had changed. Eden suited her. Her skin had tanned to a light golden brown and her hair had darkened to mahogany. She had grown a bit taller and thinner as well. She had grown into her long face so that she looked better proportioned. Her lips were set in a pout that became her.

He didn't notice how large her eyes were when they had first met. “My Lady” he said. “Will you dance?” She looked at him in shock. “If milord Emperor wishes”.

Her appearance was enhanced by her gown; It was a Tight purple silk bodice, sleeveless and strapless. The skirt was straight and at the very end tapered into four points; from whence hung little tassels.

Her dark hair was swept up and covered in a snood of purple beads. The stepped onto the floor. “Is this entirely appropriate milord Emperor?” Irulan asked.

”Yes” He said. “Milord Dowager” Leto said, as he steered himself and Irulan towards Tigris. “This song is slightly unsettling why did you chose it?” He demanded choosing the more blunt tactic to distract Tigris.

OOC: Who the hell is Irulan?

IC: As the song reached it's crescendo, Ysaar found himself hidden among the terrified crowd close to Tigris. Looking around, he realized he would have been morbidly amused that a song could cause so much havoc, but his memories kept any amusement out of his mind. As everyone else, he was still and silent, but his silence came from vigil and not horror. As he stood there and mustered his energy, he waited for the moment when he would have the chance to deliver the overwhelming strike. Leto's start was a good one, it is hard to speak and focus at the same time.

As Tigris began what would certainly be a clever and benign-seeming reply, Ysaar mentally charged the thread connecting Leto and Cosette.

OCC: Leto is betrothed to a Velon (Serdio house that replaced Drake and just recently fell) Princess. Drake named her but I didn't like her name so I changed it to Irulan.

IC:

“Our fearless Emperor, frightened of a song? Surly you jest Sir” Tigris said in the semblance of humor. Cosette said nothing and smiled voluptuously in a most un-Cosette like fashion.

Suddenly her countenance changed and it was Tigris’s turn to smile. She squirmed in the grip of Tigris. His eyes flashed red and he shook her, she again fell into the dreaming state. “Keep trying” Leto thought furiously.

"Damn," muttered Ysaar, but he didn't have much strength for speech. Pushing against the connection without success, he quickly gathered himself for another attempt and then tried a different approach. "You coward, Tigris!" he yelled. "Won't make martyrs out of your enemies, but resort to vile tactics as this trap to stop us. Look at this crowd, and look upon your doom." Turning to the throng, he spoke with a trained voice. "Your enemy stands there, and he thinks his name is Mortikan. We stand here, and we think we are the people of Eden. If we are correct, we will root out Mortikan wherever we can. Are we?!" As the intensity rippled through the crowd, he once again attacked the connection between Cosette and Tigris, hoping that the stir might make him lose his focus.

Cosette again squirmed, and Leto grabbed her from the clutches of Tigris. The latter however didn't seem to notice as all his energy was focused on Ysaar. Leto took Cosette by the hand and began to run. He turned and glanced at Irulan, cowering much to near to Tigris for comfort. The Emperor dashed back and grabbed Irulan’s hand as well, leading both from the palace.

The people had drawn near the walls or to the door, as Tigris began to let off a devilish red radiation. The room seemed to take on this color, so that it was no longer gloomy but hellish.

It was as if Tigris was on fire! His face contorted in fierce ineffable rage, and his hands clenched into fists. He muttered something that was harsh on the ears and left a metallic smell in the air.

He began to raise one of his hands, his gaze freezing Ysaar in his place when Citizen Wilks, the son of the Colonel Baron, charged from the crowd with his sword drawn, into Tigris.

The creature, for it no longer bore any semblance to the Dowager Emperor, screamed and writhed on the ground. Citizen Wilks was thrown up to the ceiling and then let drop; So hard that there was nothing left but a bloody pulp. The crowd screamed and went wild. Woman in fur coats and silk gowns ran and shouted, while the men followed in their footsteps.

Despite the grand doorway of the keep being huge, it wasn't yet large enough to let hundreds of screaming people out. Thus the crowds turned to fighting and utter mayhem descended upon the people.

On the highest floor of the hall the creature lay writhing, screaming and crying.

As he was frozen in place, Ysaar could not help but be terrified by what he had begun. In a short moment, his hatred for violence overcame his fear, and he yelled in a booming voice for order while casting a large-scale (but quite weak) Pacify spell. The effort was to much for him, though, and he crumpled to the floor unconcious.

OOC: Damned no-god-moding rules. Argh.

In the waterfall of people fleeing from the castle, Leto, Cosette and Irulan stayed mid step on the front stair and looked up. Around them the people flew. “Go to the docks. You’ll find a yacht their with the symbol of Nu’daio, it wont be hard to find. Its probably an old Imperial yacht. Go to Serdio, both of you.” The two woman looked reluctant. “now!” The Emperor shouted, and the two woman nearly leapt from the stairs and hurried from the Keep into the dark city.

Leto pushed his way through the crowd of petrified faces and fine linens into the hall. It was empty. A few people-bloody from the mob-laid semi unconscious against walls and pillars.

He ascended the steps. The higher he got in the hall the redder the atmosphere became and the more metallic the air smelt. He noted Ysaar laying, dead? He knew not.

The creature lay on the floor, bleeding black blood. It had clawed its way up to the throne and was feverishly trying to ascend the daises.

It growled and lashed out a little. Its entire metaphysical structure seemed to have collapsed into a pile of multi color gloop that slightly resembled an octopus. This was all that was left of the Dowager Emperor.

Leto took his time to decide what to do. He knew not whither Mortikan was occupying his ancestors body, or whither his ancestor was locked up somewhere and this was the true Mortikan... he closed his eyes and rubbed his temples.

The color and smell was giving him a headache and making it difficult to concentrate. Suddenly, the red imprint on his inner eye vanished and the smell became sweet like lavender.

In his mind he saw two lovely ladies, dressed in ancient clothing. He doubted not that they were the major goddesses of Love and Fertility. “fear not young one” they said in unison, their voices like chimes. “This is not our beloved ancestor, but the vile Mortikan. Your conscience may be untouched by his death.... we fear however our true ancestor lies where our godly vision can not see him. Take heed young one, we charge you with his safe return...”

Leto opened his eyes abruptly. The hall seemed to resemble the organs of a volcano. It was unbearably hot and he was sweating through his army finery. It was bright red and difficult to see. The air made waves. The smell was also unbearable.

The blob was near the throne. Leto walked up to the creature, and drawing his ceremonial sword drew up. The blob looked at him with what was left of its face, and Leto grimaced. It looked resigned and.. nearly sad....he almost felt pity.

He delivered the final blow. The blob screamed out and caught fire. The cushions and drapes of the throne instantly exploded so that the daises and seat on it resembled a sacrificial alter.

After a few moments the fire died down. The room began to regain its normal coloring, dark after the vivid red. The metallic smell went away and was replaced by a smoky one.

Leto jumped the throne steps and ran to Ysaar, who was thankfully still breathing. Leto cursed his lack of magical ability. Everyone, however, knew rudimentary healing magic-that was taught to school children. He cast a healing spell and waiting for any immediate sign of improvement.

((OCC: i suppose I didnt make clear that Mortikan was dying and couldnt kill Ysaar even if he wanted to. I wouldnt though.... charecter killing is.. a no no))

The immediate effect of the healing spell was that Ysaar's breath once again became regular and the expression of pain on his face eased. But he did not wake up, because the main source of the exhaustion was in his mind, not his body. After a few minutes of being shaken by Leto, his eyes popped open and he jumped to his feet. Immediately he started running towards the door, but after a few paces he stopped, looked around confusedly, and turned towards Leto.

"What happened?" he asked with a clear expression of bewilderment on his face.

“Mortikan is dead.” Leto said. The hall was quite, though the distant sound of military sirens cut through the silence. “Tigris has vanished and I fear for his life. I have been charged to his rescue”

"I see," he said in a voice that made it quite clear he didn't. "So it seems it is safe to remain in Mer--Eden. Very well; how do you suggest going about finding Tigris?"

Leto shook his head. “At the moment we have other things to attend to. Can you walk do you think?” The sirens had gotten even louder and Leto assumed that they were even closer. He felt a bit of sweat trickle down his brow. Though he was Emperor in name he had until this point in his life been at the mercy of his ancestor. It suddenly dawned on him that he was the most powerful man in the Empire now.

Yet he still felt-looking around at the destruction caused partially by him-like a little boy who would soon be punished by someone.

“There is no nee-” troops swarmed into the hall. Up the stairs they flew, from landing to landing until they came to Leto and Ysaar. “Halt” The Emperor said. An officer strode forward. “Hail Tigris” he said, drawing his fist to his chest in the Imperial Salute. “The Dowager Emperor is dead” Leto lied. “I take my own regency now. Stand aside” The officer looked perplexed then nodded and saluted again. “Hail Leto”.

“Set up a construction grew, call ambulances and attend to the wounded. Get me a car” Leto commanded. The officer nodded and the men thinned out, setting up road blocks and going about doing Leto’s bidding. The Emperor felt a surge of confidence.

He helped Ysaar up. “As I have said, I have been charged by the gods to find my ancestor and deliver him home. Until it is done I wont rest. I plan to set up Irulan as regent until my return. I know it seems a great deal to ask but.... would you accompany me on this voyage?”

Ysaar frowned in thought, then nodded. "Of course I'll come. I see it as my responsibility to make sure nothing goes awry in the installation of the new government." He smiled. "On the other hand, I simply won't have any of this 'I will not rest' stuff, as I must sleep--if only for an hour. I presume you will not mind me catching a few winks in the car?"

Leto smiled. "Of course. excuse me a moment" Leto walked over to the officer. They had a short but involved conversation and the officer nodded and saluted. Leto walked away. "Well go as far south as Atlanta. Will take the Trans-Eden train from there to Vulcan... I have business to attend there. We can search from there though it wont be fast. There is hardly the infrastructure that Eden and Serdio possess."

Irulan stood at the head of the porch. She wore a purple day dress; The blouse was loose as always and the waist tied with a sash. It was sleeveless and reminiscent of a chiton. The skirt was knee length. Her hair was bobbed and tucked in a small hat that resembled an upturned flower. She wore white gloves and her shoes were white.

“Madam.” The Prime Minister said. He smiled. He was elected by the lower house of the Parliament and wielded most of the power. The president was elected by the upper house and was more of a figurehead. It was the attempt of the Parliament to replace the Emperor’s position as honorary ruler with that of the president. It wasn't working yet so far. The chancellor was elected by both houses of parliament and appointed all important government officers.

The Mayor of vienna, the Baron Corporal Saxon with his wife the Baroness also was there. The Madame Chancellor, Madame Prime Minister and Madame President, the wife's of these men stood in similar dresses. The Baron Colonel Wilks was also present with his son.

“Quite the glittering assembly, would you not say Madame?” “Yes, quite” Irulan responded. Though the Princess respected the new government she felt uneasy because she knew how much they would like to displace her. The democrats made VERY clear that her position was consort to the head general and thus only.

She was Princess barely in name and her position was very iffy at best. “Have you heard yet of your husband?” “No” “Ah” The Chancellor smiled. An army officer approached and knelt and gave the Eden salute. “Hail Irulan” She smiled. Whenever she heard her name in the traditional salute it made her feel more secure.

A long line of cars, filled with the officers of the short lived Medici government in Vulcan. The front car stopped and Apollo himself got out. He wore a dark suit. He ignored the democratic leaders and walked strait to the Princess, saluting. “Hail Irulan” He said. He made his allegiance clear.

The largest thing that threatened Irulan and Leto was the abolishment of slavery which had been the first act of the parliament. One third of the population was Shii, and were very loyal to the parliament.
