February the 2nd is the Secularized tradition of 'Groundhog's day' in which, according to archaic folk beliefs, the weather is predicted by a rodent seeing its shadow. This tradition is taken from much older tradition.

Candlemasis a catholic holiday, falling in line with a post birth ritual for Jesus described in the bible, falling in line with the christian prescribed birth of Jesus (Christmas) which very probably was a fabrication to convert people to chrsitanity by making the birth of Christ fall near already established holy days, making the transition easier. It is beleived this too is a christanization of a prior pagan holiday.

In the Gaelic lands (especially Ireland) Saint Brigid became quite popular, (that is to say, she remained popular, since she is fairly obviously Brigid) and like many polytheistic faiths, the prior deities had to be absorbed into existing figures or made into saints, since the people would not feel comfortable with any attempt to vilify them. From this Saint Brigids day came to fall upon February the 2nd, also the date of Imbolc a preexisting Celtic Holiday falling around this time.

Imbolc means 'in the belly' referring to this being the return of spring, and therefore the first milk, being the first time the agricultural minded celts could get newly produced food rather than living off the harvest during Lughnasadh or the Slaughter from Samhain, Needless to say, people tend to feel very thankful around this time and this is often a day spent around the hearth. This holiday brought fourth the folk beliefs originally which evolved into groundhogs day in North America. This day is often considered a day of femminine energy and the holy day of Brigid a deity near and dear to my heart.

So whether you celebrate groundhogs day, Candlemas,Saint Brigid's day, or like myself the Celebration of Imbolc, or are simply a casual observer, I want everyone to have a great day, and may you feel blessed by any deity, or notion of a benevolent universe you may have.
