T-Boz tried to talk to me!

Copped on Bluray for 12.99 with free amazon prime shipping. Great deal. This was also the first animeated movie by DC I've seen since Mystery of the Batwoman. Mystery of the Batwoman was of course pretty abysmal in my estimations (seriously, don't bother with that film, it's a terrible ending to BTAS).

Good news is this film was easily a huge step up from that production wise. Animation was great, and it had a pretty theatrical feel. Maybe not as theatrical as animated films actually released in theaters by more experienced directors. I mean I just watched Fire and Ice from 1983 on Bluray, and that was probably 10 times more atmospheric than this film with a lot less technology, but still this is definitely a step up from what I would expect from a straight to DVD DC superhero film. Action scenes, while not extremely memorable were also well executed. Also they made the end credits look real good, which was a nice touch since those are usually ignored in something like this.

Bad points? It's pretty fucking dry. That of course is the biggest trap you would have to avoid when making something based on musty old Greek mythology. The writers and director squarely fell into it. It also took the whole feminist woman's only island thing a bit too seriously. I mean I would expect it to be there of course, but they presented in a way that it makes many of the characters including Diana herself extremely idealistic and quite boring. And predictably of course a squeaky clean feminist who can completely take care of herself needs a foil of a chauvinistic male douchebag love interest which is what Steve Trevor transformed into here. Overly macho characters grate my nerves. This is probably one of the reasons why I mainly watch shows with girls in them, but couldn't get away from it here. The guy is also a fighter pilot but apparently almost as good of a fighter as an Amazon, has super agility, can snap people's necks, and throw knives like a ninja. It doesn't make much sense to me. You can have the non-superpowered male love interest be Wonder Woman's bitch, it's ok DC. The male fans aren't going to burn down your head quarters over it.

DC gets brownie points though for growing a bit more balls with it some pretty violent death scenes and a few overt references to sex (all by Stevo of course). Glad they're growing a set beyond your saturday monring breakfast cereal fare. Still I don't understand why they couldn't have shown any skin when Steve is peeking in on the amazons taking a bath in a pond. All of them were like perfectly covered up so you could see nothing. Not that I would demand this but when you're already have stuff like "You're daughter has a great rack," in the film I don't think anyone would hold an aristic ass shot against you when we're supposed to seeing women bathing. One fight scene where Diana doesn't have shoes on I think was bordering on fanservice though. It looked sexy to me anyways. XD

Also I recall the creator of this series saying yuri went on with the Amazons, but due to how dry and sexless their society is presented here there's of course none of that. There was one moment that I could alsmost get subtext out of, but I would need super ultra high-powered yuri goggles to even see a faint glimmer of femslash in that scene. Not that I would ever expect it to be center stage in something like this, but if you're going to do the whole feminist trope you could at least throw a bone to the lesbians with some side characters or something. It is a women's only society after all.

But yeah it wasn't a total wash. I may watch it again some time, but gonna give this one a C+ I think. I'll commend them for a nice effort but it doesn't have that extra umph to make it any better for me.
