I don't know I just think this needs to be stated plainly. If you are asian, forget being a lead for anything in a Hollywood movie. Just looked into the Chun-Li movie out of curiosity even though I didn't pay attention to it when it came out. Cast as Chun-Li is "Kirsten Krunek" from Smallville. She is technically half Chinese, btw, but you just gotta think this was the thinking from the studio heads:

Sudio Head 1, Bob- "Okay, guize. We have to make a movie about this full-blooded Chinese chick from Street Fighter with those awesome, thick thighs."

Studio Head 2, Dave - "But most Americans still hate Japs. Like World War II happened yesterday. Our target audience is white suburban preteens and their Baptist soccer moms who take them to the theater and think asians practice oriental witchcraft like Fu-Manchu."

Bob - "But if we don't cast an Asian, people will call us racist. We don't need that kind of bad PR."

Dave - "Simple, we'll hire the most un-asian, white looking person with some Chinese blood we can find, so we can cast a white girl and give us cover from charges of racism at the same time."

Bob - "Are you sure, Dave. I mean I also produced D.O.A. the movie and we cast all those asian chicks with washed up white porn stars."

Dave - "But that bombed, Bob. We need to get someone who at least has some kind of name."

Bob - "That show Smallville was popular 10 years ago. I think a white girl in the show Lana Lang was played by this Canadian named Kirsten Kreuk. She's Canaidan, but half Chinese, but she looks so un-Chinese it's like staring at a mayonaise sandwich on white bread."

Dave - "Genius!"

Bob - "She's also skinny as a rail with tiny legs. Who cares if Chun-Li is well built with muscular thighs. If our target audience saw any actress over 130 lbs. on the screen, they'd run out of the theater screaming bloody murder."

Dave - "Damn right they would! Kirsten it is."

Bob and Dave - *high five*

And then the movie bombed. Mission accomplished.

It shouldn't have though. It had Kevin Nash!

And six white hookers with asian names. Dragon Ball was another great one with white douchebag Goku. XD

Also you need more evidence Hollywood has a bias against asians, check out this bit on the 2008 gambling movie, 21, based on "real life events":

Quote:

Controversy arose over the decision to make the majority of the characters white, even though the main players in the book Bringing Down the House, upon which the film 21 is based, were mainly Asian. Studio executives determined that "most of the film's actors would be white, with perhaps an Asian female."[1]

Nick Rogers of The Enterprise wrote "The real-life students mostly were Asian-Americans, but 21 whitewashes its cast and disappointingly lumps its only major Asian actors (Aaron Yoo and Liza Lapira) into one-note designations as the team's kleptomaniac and a slot-playing "loser."[2]

Supporters of the decision to cast Jim Sturgess as Ben Campbell claim that producers simply sought the best actor for the job, regardless of race. Ultimately, this meant passing over many Asian-American talents in favor of London-born Jim Sturgess, who required a dialect coach to speak with an American accent.[3]

Jeff Ma, who was the real-life inspiration for the character Ben Campbell and served as a consultant on the film, was accused of being a "race traitor" on several blogs for not insisting that his character be Asian American. In response, Ma said, "I'm not sure they understand how little control I had in the movie-making process; I didn't get to cast it."[4] Ma said that the controversy was "overblown" and that the important aspect is that a talented actor would portray him.[5]

It's really sad that this is still an issue in Hollywood - I mean when I saw the Bruce Lee biography, it was the same damn thing - That somehow an asian couldn't be the lead in a film.... >_>

It's a more subtle form of black face imo, but just as bad. If a character is asian, they should be portrayed by asian actors. End of story. It's well known asian actors can't get work in hollywood, and it has nothing to do with their acting ability. Its 2009 and the suits still think they can get away with stuff like chopping off black actors from a movie poster when it plays in international markets. They're willing to discriminate as long as there is an imagined profit motive to it. I'd say its just institutionalized bigotry though like Laura pointed out since this has been going on for decades. Asian actors "don't sell" because no one is willing to put them in lead roles because they "don't sell." And I would like to see what would happen if the same thing happened as in that film 21, where real life people who were asian were played by white people, happened to black people. Would that fly? Just imagine "The Story of Jackie Robinson starring Tom Cruise." XD

I saw that thing about the black actors getting chopped out of the UK posters for that stupid movie...it's disgraceful, is what it is... and the producers tried to palm it off as "Well, the international market doesn't like black actors", and claiming that films with black leads don't sell as well. I call Shenanigans on that.... >_>

He only does "kung fu" roles. Plus how many US budgeted Jackie Chan movies have you seen where he didn't have a goofy, non-Asian partner to share 50 percent of the top billing with?

Another reason for me to hate Hollywood.

God. We stop watching their movies to make a point.

This is so wrong on some many levels. >_>

I would pay WAY too much to see this movie. For the lulz. But I don't think most of the world would see it as an unintentional comedy. The last time someone tried blackface it just didn't work.

Writer: Carol Black

I laughed more than I should have.

Personally, I think it's more insulting that Howell looked more like an Indian dude and yet, YET, all the black characters in the film totally bought him as being black.

Also, pretty sure the last film to star Asians in a lead role that managed to not make them look stereotypical and made fun of stereotypes was of all things, "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle". Yeah, it's a stoner comedy, but there's some nice "Hey, fuck you and you're preconceived notions of East Asians and Indians" moments in it too.

lmao, I remember reading that thing about 21 too D: It was such a good movie too~ (The Legend of Chun Li just... failed, though lmaoo xDD Wasn't Vega some guy from The Black Eyed Peas or something? :S)

A more recent example of racism in Hollywood is with Ninja Assassin, btw~ Rain is a pretty popular Korean singer/actor and his first major Hollywood role is as... a ninja assassin (: I like how it was based in Japan but he's Korean??? LOLOK... But yeah, anyway, I think he pretty much knew that he would have to take a stereotypical Asian role in order to succeed here, lmao~

1. "some guy from The Black Eyed Peas or something" is the best (and most accurate) description of Taboo ever. I'm still shocked that there's a movie out there that lead to people calling the first live action Street Fighter the "good one".

2. In Hollywood, Asian is Asian. Chinese? Japanese? Korean? Mongolian? Same dealie.

I wonder if he would've still taken the role if he knew Vega was gay and sends sexy photos of himself to Zangief. XD

And then the movie bombed. Mission accomplished.
And yet the guy who wrote it is writing the Voltron movie.

I never thought I'd ever say this, but please, someone get Uwe Boll to take over the Voltron movie.

Seriously how do these people keep getting work? He already bombed before this film with Doom. Shouldn't there be like a two strikes and your out rule? lol Something like Voltron is going to have a big budget, so it's basically burning money. They probably hire him though because he has such a shitty reputation he'll basically work for free.
